When the shuttle is landing, it sounds exactly like a J-type 327 Nubian royal starship from Star Wars.

I didn't think of these things as "copycat" instances so much as "references and homages," in both ME1 and ME2. The plot is supposed to be action-packed and interesting, but at the end of the day, it's more of a pastiche (akin to Star Wars) than a wholly original work. The Reapers are clearly references to Cthulhu/Lovecraft; the "decontamination in progress" loading screen seems a reference to Aliens; the rachni seem like something out of Starship Troopers (or Ender's Game, or any other of a number of sci-fi stories with big bug aliens); the Phoenix armor looks like the old uniforms from Voltron; Jenkins is a reference to Leeroy Jenkins; etc.

-The turians are extremely reminiscent of the Elites from Halo. Warrior culture, mandibles, etc ect.

-Alien Abductions...oldest cliche in the book, haha

Element Zero and the Bergenholm.

For those who don't recognize it, the Bergenholm was a device in E.E. "Doc" Smith's Lensmen novels that allowed faster than light space travel by negating the inertia (effective mass) of starships.

Or go read, E.E. 'Doc' Smith, Philip K. Dick, Robert Heinlein, Alfred Bester, Frank Herbert & William Gibson.

That should cover most of the ideas in todays ScFi games.

The reapers remind me of a cross between Lovecraft & Alistair Reynolds (Revelation Space)...

Quarians/Geth - Humans/Cylons pretty much the same. I highly doubt there were any intentions to copycat all shows mentioned in this thread. Homage seems far more likely.

I see tons of reference from 5th Element in both architectural design and Npc (Volus,Krogans etc)....

The Collectors, in particular the head Collector, look rather similar to the Shadows from Babylon 5.

But then again, Mass Effect has a lot in common with Babylon 5.

To be fair, they are not copying anything that hasn't been done before.

The Landing-Shuttle reminds me of the StarTrek 2nd Generation-Shuttles.

The Volus sound like Darth Vader.

Weapons unfold like the big one in "fifth element"

Reapers somehow start to remind me of the Borg in their use of organic life.

Krogan culture reminds me of the Klingons.

Biotics are close to the Force.

But I can't say I really care about it.

In todays society I barely see anything that hasn't been made before.

And after all: The ME-Universe fits together in pretty much every aspect.

My thoughts exactly. I'm not a huge RPG fan to begin with but I love Mass Effect so much because of my love for B5. At the end of the day I think there all homages to the very best of what Sci-Fi has to offer.

Scottish space engineer. Most aliens resemble humans.
