Ok so I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate, with an AMD Phenom II x4 processor, a GeForce 260 GTX and 3 Gb of ram, and ME1 won't start. I played all the way through ME2 on max settings with no hiccups, so clearly its not my hardware that's causing problems. But how come it won't start? I get to the screen where it says press any key, then as it starts zooming out from the planet it just goes black and crashes. I've patched it up 1.02, updated my display driver to the one that just came out on 1/12/10, and I've been searching around but i can't find anything that helps. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

P.S. I bought the digital download from Gamestop if that helps.

This is the most frustrating thing. I've seen plenty of posts by people saying the problem is casued by this or that, and I've tried everything they've said. I run both the launcher and the game exe with admin priveleges, I've tried compatability mode for XP sp3, I tried running it with a clean startup, I even found one thing that said I needed to replace 2 .dll's from the binaries folder, which I did. All to no avail. My video card driver is up to date, I don't have a sound card so I just run the sound of software, which works fine with every other game. UAC is disabled. I've reinstalled. I just don't understand. Sorry to bump my own thread, but I've tried literally everything I could find on my own and nothing's working. Please, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Very strange. Perhaps you should check out your log files in Bioware\\Mass Effect\\Logs under My Documets (or Win7 equivalent, I've read that would be something like C:\\Users\\ ?) and see what they say. Frankly haven't found them to be very useful before, but maybe they will be with this problem.

I'll be honest: I have no idea and am probably off on a wild goose chase. But after the initial problem with the Impulse DD with, I figure maybe something similar is going on with GameStop. So: what files do you have listed in Mass Effect\\BioGame\\Config under wherever you've installed it? (Probably somewhere in Program Files.) On my working installation, I have:
DefaultCredits.ini
DefaultEditor.ini
DefaultEngine.ini
DefaultGame.ini
DefaultGuiResources.ini
DefaultInput.ini
DefaultParty.ini
DefaultQA.ini
DefaultStringTypeMap.ini

And under My Documents\\Bioware\\Mass Effect, what files are in the Config and Save folders, if any?

I have exactly the same problem.

AMD X2 +6000

8800GTX 768Mb

4GB ram

I'm using x64 vista. I played ME1 on my PC before. But not any more. I don't understant what happend. I'm not sure but I suspect this problem from a codec. Maybe not of course. I have reinstalled the game. Here are the before and after reinstalled game problem lists.

I think reinstalling only changed the "StackHash_1703" to "StackHash_7dc0". Game still crash when camera moving around the planet after the "press any button" appears on the screen. I have tried alot of things for two days and nights. But I have not any solutions. Please help. And sorry for my english like that.

I just bought a hard copy of ME1, "EA Value Games" type, already had ME2 installed, ran perfectly. Me1 lauches, after two minutes shows the Bioware log, another 2 minutes and shows the EA logo, gets to the "press any key" and when u hit the key that stays up for a while, then just shows the planet in the background.

Haven't found a solution yet

This is not the ME-1 Tech forum (the two were only very temporarily together in the same forum, but are not any longer, so this thread is overdue to be moved).  You didn't follow the instructions about including information, either.

Tried installing on my laptop, which doesn't have ME2 installed, ME1 installed and ran perfectly. Not sure whether something in ME2 causes a codec conflict of some sort though...

What do you not understand? This is the tech forum of Mass Effect 2, not 1.
Edit: This post is no longer relevant.

Just to ensure.. Latest patch included ? I know my game crashed on config until I patched it to 1.02.

That last added comment was only SPAM, and should just be reported as such, instead of replying to it.

What makes you say it's spam? I have looked at several of these threads whilst trying to solve my own problem, some of which would have solved my problem with that little comment. The obvious is frequently missed. True the initial poster patched but a small consise reply in what seems to be a current problem thread without going into a lot of detail is more likely to be read and solve people's problems before frustration sets in than having to delve into system specs etc. The idea is to provide a general solution before people have to revert to posting their individual problems.
