When I first played ME2 and saw my first Collector and Harbinger, I immediately thought "Are those the aliens from Independence Day?" Upon closer examination, I realized they were not but, seriously, does anybody else agree that there is a striking similarity between the two aliens?
Do the Collectors look sort of... similar?

Never seen it so I wouldn't know. Still, I was waiting to find Will Smith in a ship with a nuke on the Collector Ship talking about the Fat Lady and such.

Their general reminds me of the Independence day aliens. I'm sure they got their inspiration there. At least with the head.

It's been a while, but didn't the ID aliens have wavy squishy tentacles?

Their heads are shaped like reapers, I thought, sans reapers' arms

I don't care what kind of hacker Jeff Goldblum is...
You don't hack an alien mothership with a Mac.

That's exactly what I was thinking when I first saw the general.

I see the resemblance, the head shape is roughly similar although the face is quite a bit different, they're also lacking the tentacles of the ID aliens. The end scene with the base blowing up around the Collector General did remind me a lot of Independence Day though, very similar set up and alien build.

They're mutant space bugs that abduct people to consume their genetics.
I couldn't stop comparing them to the Tyranid, even if they don't look like them. But I don't know if they look like the aliens from the Independence Day. It's been years since I watched that movie.

The Shadows basically look like big spiders with wide head very similar to the Collectors, and four eyes. They play a bit similar part as the Reapers as an unknown evil force that awakens every 1000 years and leads the galaxy to a destructive war. Ofcourse they were ultra-Darwinists who didn't seek to destroy other races but force them to become stronger through strife.

The heads look alittle similar, but overall, I'd say no.

Not even close.
But video, movies and comics have had so many aliens in em, something is bound to look similar at some point. =d
