So far, the only BioWare games I have played are Mass Effect 1 and 2, and Dragon Age: Origins.  I love all three of them.  I'm also a HUUUGGGEEE Star Wars fan.  I love the movies, lore, books, extended universe...you name it.  I have heard really great things about KOTOR but I have never had a laptop that had great gaming specs so I never got a chance to play it.

I am considering getting one of them now, but I am not sure which one, or which system.  KOTOR 1 or 2?  PC or Xbox?  Any help is appreciated!

KOTOR 2 wasn't made by Bioware, it was actually made by Obsidian. Just thought I'd clarify that so there isn't any confusion or misconceptions.

I'd say play both, as I'm sure you can get them pretty cheap now. I played them on PC, not Xbox, so I'm obviously going to recommend PC version.

I had fun with both. My only gripe with KOTOR 2 is that it could have been so much more if they hadn't been rushed to release it by a specific date. If they had been given an extra 6 months or so, the game would have felt much more complete, and they wouldn't have cut so much content.

Edit: KOTOR 2 was still an enjoyable game despite the cut content. It was as good as the first game, but the endings were a little confusing and/or wonky, because they were rushed to get it out by a certain date. Also, the cut planet and incomplete romances because of time contraints make the game feel a bit incomplete. Blame Lucas Arts.

Yeah, I know that Obsidian made the sequel, but KOTOR is still a BioWare franchise I guess...or something like that...

Which one had the better/more enjoyable/etc. story mode? Did one offer something that the other didn't? Which one is considered the better game?

I prefer the first one better but you should still give the second one a try. It's got a good dark story it just starts to fall apart near the end but the gameplay is still fun

I liked the second games story a little more. It was a lot darker, and dare I say, not as cheesy? The first story was a little cheesy at times. But, the first had complete romances, and IMO the companions were a bit more fleshed out. Towards the end, the second game really does fall apart, and becomes a tad confusing.

Though, my preference for the second game may come from my love of Atton, who is so much more interesting then Carth. I hate Carth. I love Atton. Damn you Obsidian for not making a complete Atton romance.

KOTOR 1 is the better of the two, better story and characters. Though I recommend playing them both. I would also recommend the PC version.

Yeah the only games i have played are ME1+2 plus DA:O... Too many people have said that they loved KOTOR so i got it on Steam (£3 sale ftw)... anyway i haven't played much of it yet since they've released two awesome games. I played KOTOR 2 and finished it, it was a good game but it did seem rushed and the ending wasn't that polished.

Another vote for KotOR2. KotOR looks better. Well, brighter and prettier. It's like KotOR 2 was hit with a Stick of Drabness +1.

In any case, KotOR tells the more traditional story. If you want an experience that reminds of the original trilogy in style and feel, and proper ending, KotOR is the best choice.

If you want a more unique and intriguing story with characters that are not as archetypal, get KotOR2. Ideally, you should just buy both and play them back to back. chiliztri hit the nail on the head as far as KotOR2 goes.

I agree with this. The story and characters are more interesting in KOTOR 2 but KOTOR 1 is more Star Wars-ish if that makes sense.

They both have ups and downs. Kotor 1's big thing was a great plot which the second one lacked, and mostly better characters. Kotor 2 felt better from a gameplay standpoint with prestige class powers (Sith Maurader crush is my personal fav) and deeper character interaction as dialogues with with party members can influence them to learn the force and be light or dark. You can't go wrong with both, but play one first to fill in the gaps in the story. PC is the prefered way to play these.

I have a 360 so if I got the Xbox version I would play it on there....unless its not backwards-compatible?

My laptop isn't very good gaming-wise...I have either 12MB8 or 256MB graphics card, 1.5GB of RAM, and an AMD64 processor Athelon x2 processor. Would the PC version run well with no-lag on this?

If you go to that website on your laptop and select KOTOR 1/2 from the drop down list, it'll tell you whether you meet the minimum or recommended requirements.

If your laptop doesn't meet the requirements, I'd say get the Xbox versions. Both games are on the backwards compatibility list.

Kotor has the stronger story across the entire game. Kotor 2 has better game mechanics and better character relationships...but the story falls flat as a result of it having no real ending. Either way, both amazing games and far superior to the abominable Old Republic MMO Bioware are throwing our way.

On the subject of Kotor 2 and it's cut story though, from an earlier Kotor 2 thread:

Gilded Age wrote...

Team Gizka never finished their mod. It was D.L. Stoney and crew who finished a restoration mod. You can find the mod here and a list of what's been restored here. :)

Some content has finally been restored. Might even have come on further, seems as these links are from three months ago. I keep meaning to give the mod a go, but first Dragon Age and then Mass Effect 2 stole me away. Nevertheless, one day I thoroughly intend upon seeing the fabled HK Droid factory!

I recommend playing both. KOTOR2 is set not long after KOTOR and has some recurring characters, so play KOTOR first. I also recommend playing it on PC because I think the xbox version is more difficult to find since it's on an old system.

I haven't played the second but the first is one of the best RPGs out there. If you loved DA:O I think you will like KotOR as well.

Also the game isn't very demanding, even so if all your PC can do is 20-30 fps you're fine.(The game has very little action gameplay.)

I prefer the first, but KotOR2 is still a good game, despite a few glaring flaws, most notably being a lot of cut content wasn't really 'cleanly' cut

Kotor was the one that Bioware made and Obsidian Entertainment made Kotor 2, so that is probably why the 2nd one falls a bit short on the storyline aspect, and specifically the ending. I own both games and both are well worth playing, and I think you can even download some higher resolution cutscenes for the 2nd game at the Lucas Arts site.

I have to disagree. If Obsidian wasn't pressured by Lucas Arts to get the game finished in time for the holiday season, I think the game could have been on par, if not better, then the first. A lot of things were missing and incomplete, and if they had an extra 6 months to finish the game, it would have been gold IMO.

That's just my opinion though, as I have a strong preference for the darker story and colorful characters from KOTOR 2. It really comes down to what your type of story preference is. As Seagloom said, if you like something more akeen to the original trilogy, KOTOR is probably what you prefer. KOTOR feels complete, while KOTOR 2 is rough around the edges. Despite it's obvious flaws, I still prefer KOTOR 2.

I also feel KoTOR1 is better. I know for a fact that the ending of 1 was way more satisfying.

Play KOTOR and if you enjoy it (despite it's dated graphics) then go on to play KOTOR 2.

Kotor1 is better but kotor2 is much much darker and grittier.

Kotor2 is a half done game however as half the game got cut in half and discarded.

KOTOR1. If you're going to play KOTOR2, do it on PC with the fan-made completion mod. The problem is, it's still unfinished and buggy as hell even in its modded state.
