By the way, do yourself a favor and DON'T READ ANYTHING ABOUT KOTOR UNTIL YOU FINISH. Seriously.

Regardless of what people say about Obsidian and KOTOR2 play both for good measure.

Play both, but play Kotor 1 first before Kotor 2--there are some spoilers for Kotor 1 in K2, although you can play K2 without having played K1. I played both on a laptop, including a laptop with only a 32 MB video card, so it is possible. There are some issues playing both on a system that has Vista or Windows 7. There is an excellent thread on how to get both games running on these OSs in this thread in the Kotor section of Lucasforums (click me). The Bioware site probably has fixes as well, I haven't checked there lately. I would recommend the PC version because there are tons of mods (see the Holowan Laboratories subforum and also Kotorfiles at FileFront). I don't know if the Bioware store sells the game or not, but I do know that both games are available on Steam and Direct2Drive if Bioware doesn't, and they aren't very expensive at all.
If you like Bioware games and love Star Wars, you'll love the Kotor games. Both are incredibly enjoyable.

As stated KotOR is the more complete game overall. I think KotOR 2 has the more interesting companion and progression system. Other than that there wasn't much I preferred about the sequel.

KOTOR1 is the more "complete" game so to speak. But it's also pretty uninteresting. You'll recognize the character stereotypes quickly, and the story is... Well. It's very classic Star Wars, simple and easy to digest and well pulled off for what it is. But I can't say I find it to be a particularly interesting game.
KOTOR2 is a fractured game (but the restoration patch helps) but it really goes beyond what you'd expect from Star Wars. It's a far more interesting game if you ask me. There is a fair amount of thematic depth if you open your eyes to it, which is nice and pretty unusual as far as games go.
I think the gameplay in both is pretty crappy. Way too easy overall, and not nearly enough depth in the rulesystem.
As far as game franchises go, I think the KOTOR games are some of the most overrated there are. At least in terms of the gameplay. Still, probably worth a try nowadays since they can most likely be found for a really cheap price.

Ok so in my opinion, both of this two games was cool in their ways, you got action, plot, and star wars world...
I just dont like people like my friends o.O they saw the KOTOR, wanted to see how look's battle. They saw the battle and told something like "This is a fight? Something of ****, i dont gonna play this game anymore". Three days later, my friend who have told this thing phoned me and tell me :
"Man, sorry. I have played this game little longer and it's cool! Can you help me..." etc, etc...So, game is good but not for all

As much as I liked KotoR2, the fact that there was just so much missing really hurt the game, so I'd have to pick KotoR1.
However, if Lucas Arts had actually given Obsidian a chance to finish the game, which would have included about 20 extra quests, two extra planets, and a much better ending, then it might have been the best RPG since Planescape: Torment.

KOTOR was the first BioWare game I had ever played, and I must say that it is the game that made me realise that gaming can be so much more than killing and quick-time-events. KOTOR's narrative has led me to become a fanboy of BioWare, and found the Church of Drew Karpyshyn.
Seriously Drew, I love you man.
In KOTOR 2 I could tell something was wrong from the moment I hit the 'New Game' button.
The entirety of KOTOR 2 consisted of Obsidian urinating in my screaming mouth. I have to congratulate them on ruining the KOTOR series, after retardifying so much of it up. The story of KOTOR 2 can be summed up as this.
As you can guess, I believe the first one is superior.
