As the title states, I'm having difficulty with the Feros mission in the first Mass Effect. This is the error I receive: http://img130.images...23/me1error.jpg . It happens as the cut scene plays right after you attempt to land. It shows the Normandy in it's space flight cut scene, then all I see is a starry back drop then it crashes.

Windows XP SP2
3.2 gigs (8 installed) Ram
Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4P MoBo
AMD Phenom II X4 810 Processor
ATI Radeon HD 4850 Graphics
Realtec HD Audio

Anyone have a clue as to what would be causing the crash?

Recurring errors in the same spot often indicate a corrupt installation, especially when the game is otherwise working fine. This can mean some trouble. The good news is, if the problem does lie with (a) corrupted file(s), nothing is going wrong with your system.

If you got the game through a Direct Download service like Steam, Impulse, etc. you may be able to tell the download client to "Verify" your installation and make sure all the files are intact. If you have the game on disc, or if your Direct Download service doesn't support verification for Mass Effect, you'll have to re-install.

If re-installing Mass Effect 1, I'm uncertain if it will keep your save games. I recommend backing up your Bioware\\\\Mass Effect\\\\Save directory, which you can find under My Documents in Windows XP. (Try looking under C:\\\\User\\\\ for Vista/7?) If re-installing Mass Effect 2, make sure to tell the game to keep your settings & saves when you uninstall.

To try verifying your files on your Direct Download service:
In Steam, right-click on the game and select "Properties." Select the "Local Files" tab and click the button that says "Verify integrity of game cache..."
In Impulse, right-click on the game. On the menu that pops up, there may be an option to "Verify Installation." (I do not see this option for my Mass Effect 2 DDE. Can anyone comment on Mass Effect 1?)
Direct2Drive: Don't know, never used it. Can anyone comment?
EA Download Manager: Don't know, never used it. Can anyone comment?

Well, I originally used a copy that a friend of mine gave me (I'm not sure where he got it) and it was giving me this error. I tried updating and uninstalling, neither worked. So I bought it and downloaded it with the EA Download Manager, still same issue. There's no option that I could find to have it verify downloaded files.

I did try updating my video card drivers to fix this. That didn't work either. I tried the EA Live help, but that didn't get me anywhere.

It just might be something with the computer then, especially if 2 different sources of the game are giving me the exact same error.

Strange. I'm afraid I'm pretty much out of suggestions. The only other one I'd have is to try changing your graphics settings around - lower the resolution, lower the details, change window/full screen, etc. A long shot, but maybe it'd knock something loose enough for you to proceed.

That's something I was going to try here in just a bit. Right now my goal is to get a pool of ideas. The config utility the game comes with crashes (related to my processor from what I've read) so I've had to manually adjust settings thru the config files. It's been fine with every other mission except this one tho so it wasn't my first thought.

I'm gonna go back in and see if I can find a setting specific to that particular type of image.

Well hoalee****skie! You were right in thinking it was a configuration error. I went thru and found a few settings that looked off. If anyone ever wants exact details lemme know. And thanks for your help Kloreep.
