Is there any kind of patch to get SQL Server 2005 to work correctly with SP2? For a couple of reasons (I won't go into details here) updating to SP3 is not really an option for me... been there, done that, didn't work out right.
But I was looking forward to using the toolset. It would stink bigtime if, due to an error in SQL Server 2005, I am unable to use and install the toolset on my installation.

Does anyone know of a patch for this issue for SP2? The Microsoft pages for this issue DO show that hotfixes are available, but only for SP3 and up :(

SP3 installs a couple things no self respecting admin would ever put on a machine which is why there is an option to not install SP3 and just get the updates.

All of which can be disabled.

But the only thing I can see bioware needing from SP3 is the hot fixes, XML6, and the dot not pieces. Which are all updates that you get from windows update. I can see them saying you need SP3 so that they now you have those by default.

But none of that should matter if you have a fully updated SP2 unless they found a way to make NAP work across an internet connection,,,

Anyway -- it's not Bioware that requires SP3, it's SQL Server Express 2005.  That's a free product from Microsoft that the toolset uses.  If you want to complain, I'm sure you can get your money back.

Okay, my problem is solved. All you need to do to get the toolset to work with XP SP2 is install hotfix KB943232 (Sxs.dll 5.1.2600.3295) :)

I climbed aboard this failboat last night. It was my own fault though. Bioware clearly stated service pack 3 was required.

The way I fixed the loop of death was to open in Safe Mode and then delete the  SQL Server Express 2005 folder from program files. Since windows could no longer find the files to start the service it could no longer crash. I then promptly installed SP3 and re-installed the toolset.

Everything works peachy now.

I got it to work. Had to restore the db from the .bak file as described in the troubleshooting wiki. I got an error first due to the security settings on the dragon age folder, after i changed the security settings to "grant all", i successfully got the db restored.

What troubleshooting wiki?  Where is this resource?  TIA

actually SQL Server Express 2005 does not require SP3, I'm running the toolset fine. I am running Express Edition with Advanced Services instead of the basic version, but neither need anything from windows XP SP3 as it is the 3rd sp for sql server, mostly to work with newer versions of vs.

I don't have a problem with the game or the toolset, just the people giving out bad info. I can not count the number of times I run into users who broke something because the internet told them to.

Ugh I didn't bother reading it either and got myself into the reboot cycle. I'm wondering if there's a way around it. I don't remember why I didn't want to upgrade to Sp3 but I know I had a reason and since it's a problem with SQL server express 2005 maybe it'll play nice with a newer version like 2008. Anyone have any success running the toolset on another SQL platform? Maybe MySql?

I'm running WinXP SP2 with all updates, and both the game and toolset work just fine.

I'm running on an X48 motherboard with Q9650 CPU and Radeon HD 5870 card.  I'm guessing the key SP3 "feature" is included in one of the hotfixes that I applied to my SP2 installation.

I doubt that SP3 has any key update that you can't get for SP2 in a hotfix.

As I already stated above: "All you need to do to get the toolset to work with XP SP2 is install hotfix KB943232 (Sxs.dll 5.1.2600.3295)". This means this hotfix will indeed allow you to run SQL Server Express 2005 on XP SP2.

On the Microsoft website it appears that the patch is only available for SP3 and up, but if you request the SP3 version, you get the very same patch that works on SP2 as well.

If you are having problems with SQL 2005, go to SQL 2008 and reconfigure your toolset to point to that instead. I'm running SQL 2008 with XP sp 2 and having no issues what so ever..

Microsoft doesn't have that file on thier site any more. DO you know of a place to download it?

Follow the Microsoft link I posted above, select the SP3 line and fill in your email address. MS will mail you a link where you can download the hotfix (as stated, the SP3 hotfix is exactly the same as the SP2 hotfix).

[Edit] or you can download it right here...
(hope this is allowed; if not, just someone let me know and I'll remove it again)

I used Express Edition with Advanced Services as well and it runs fine on Service Pack 2 for me too. :)

What does this update (KB943232) do? Does it disable sound recording?

SP3 disables sound recording (among other things).

What good things does it do? Is there a list of features we can read?

Note: F8 never works for me. I got out of the loop by using a BartPE disk and disallowing System from using SQL.

Because maybe that SP3 has some seriouse security issues as well? So why go from SP2 to SP3 for just about no extra benefits? But more pitfalls.

lol. Glad I read this AFTER I got the BS of D :D

Fortunately I had another hard drive sitting around to hook up and delete the stuff from the old hard drive :D

Also, as to why I would have an absolete version of windows...

Essentially, the CD key and copy I had with a company happened to not work, and the time ran out on it. I just happened to find out that hitting the online support button opens internet explorer.

IE is wonderful for people who used to use windows 3.2 when they were younger, and I never got around to calling to get the CD key fixed ^_^.

No, the only thing this hotfix does, is fix the problem described in this thread about Windows XP SP2 crashing (rebooting) with MS SQL Server 2005. It does not include any other features from SP3. See the description of this hotfix here

PS: for those who doubt it... I have a fully licensed XP install, which is also why I had no problems at all obtaining the above hotfix from Microsoft. SP3 causes some issues for my situation (which I won't go into details in here) due to which it's not an option for me. But look at it another way... why install updates if the version you're on is working very well? In general I only install updates if they fix an issue that I'm having (I'm also still at DA:O version 1.00, as it doesn't offer anything I want... and I've read that lots of people had issues with it).

That ain't obvious answer mate, SP3 is basicly nothing more than bundle of previous fixes, so if you have not reinstalled your windows after SP3 was released and installed all patches from Windows update (excluding SP3) there is no major reason to install it anyway. Be more careful before you call people pirates just because they don't share your views.

I know it's a great idea to warn the person installing the toolset on a computer with SP2 or lower, but I don't think you should outright forbid it. When I had attempted to convert to SP3 a while ago, it totally messed up my computer and I had to revert back. The toolset works fine for me, luckily... I just hope there weren't also be restrictions on installing the toolset patches.

The problem won't necessarily arise, It's even possible for this to just crash your computer from time to time. This is an error between the database and windows. Got a friend in DB architecture side of the IT field that's run into it several times before.

I have to agree with that.
The current toolset isn't outright incompatible with XP SP2, provided SP2 is fully up-to-date. As in: it's probably multi-factoral and not only SP2's fault.
At the very least, I'm running it flawlessly (appart from the core corrupting glitch) under SP2, and I will not install SP3 under any circumstances or reasons. I might add there are quite a few people having hard feelings against SP3.

Anyway, if the toolset patch adamantly refuse to install without SP3, well, I'll have to live with the glitch. <_<
