Why the game runs fine on SP2?Selvec_Darkon wrote...
To be honest, you shouldn't have installed the game if you have SP2 or lower. The min requirements for DA:O are Windows XP SP3.

Microsoft doesn't have that file on thier site any more. DO you know of a place to download it?
Follow the Microsoft link I posted above, select the SP3 line and fill in your email address. MS will mail you a link where you can download the hotfix (as stated, the SP3 hotfix is exactly the same as the SP2 hotfix).
[Edit] or you can download it right here...
(hope this is allowed; if not, just someone let me know and I'll remove it again)
Yeah I didn't see your second post until after. Thanks for the link mate!

I landed myself in the SQL reboot mess as well. Strange thing is the suggested fix's didnt work and neither did re-installing XP, I brought it to a repair shop and they said the HD was gone. Think the SQL problem did in my HD or just a strangely timed coincidence?
Repeatedly rebooting should not destroy your harddisk, so my guess is that it was already on the edge of breaking down, and the added activity was just the final straw.
I am curious about your remark that "the suggested fixes didn't work", though... did you install the hotfix that I referred to? If you did and that didn't fix the rebooting, then I would definitely like to know.

No I didnt get to try your hotfix, comp went 'funny' before that. Tried the uninstall methods for removing the SQL, after that I couldnt get past the loading screen, then tried re-installing windows again with no luck.

With the hotix you have recommended I am running toolset on XP SP2 without any problems (so far).
Can somebody explain me in plane words for what a hell we need SQL Server 2005? How many players/modders are profiting from this feature? I do not think that these numbers can be compared with those who have problems caused by it.
What is Ok for the developers’ team does not be obligatory transferred to the modding community.
Is it possible to have two variants: one (with SQL Server 2005) for team workers, and another for stupid individuals (without it)?
BioWare plans to create a check/block for SP2 users in the coming toolset patch are not encouraging.
I have serious legal reasons not to install SP3. At the moment game and toolset are running, for what than.

@bejamus: sorry, I have no idea if this problem occurs in the 64-bit version of XP. What version of Sxs.dll do you have on your system?
@A1x2e3l: glad to hear it worked for you too. And the game itself does not require SQL Server, the toolset does. You cannot use the toolset without it.

I DL'd the toolset to and had my problems but I'm back after a fresh install of XP, I think I'll finish DA:O and MOW and then think about getting the toolset again.
However, while searching for an answer to my previous problem I found this if anybody is intertested.
" The issue with the rebooting after installing on AMD based systems is OEM deploys their images from an Intel platform to the AMD based system too. The culprit file is "intelppm.sys" it's a file used for intel systems.
If you installed it and can get into safemode, then go
to HKEY_Local_Machine>system>Current Control Set>Services
Find intelppm and change the value from a 1 to a 4.
If you have not install SP3 yet on your AMD based system do that registry change first to prevent the issue ".
Not sure if it will help anyone but I foud it and thought I put it on here for others.
Cheers!

Wish I would have noticed this thread earlierI did, however, manage to get it out of the endless loop by hitting F8 and going to 'last known good config', haven't done anything else with it yet. Seems like an awful lot of trouble though.
Ditto, glad to find out what the issue was.

I know it was unclear, since they spelled it out in plain English, but the problem was with SQL 2005, not the toolset.
Perhaps so but what Mod tool in recient history has even used SQL. To my account there has been none!! And what reason could Bioware have for tying their modding tool to such an old piece of software as SQL 2005 since SQL 2008 has been available for a while now. If a company is going to tie their software to other support software they should at least make sure it does not cause serious system problems for the user.
At least there were threads on how to fix this disaster should the reboot bug it happen. I'd like to see the updated toolset support SP2 users a little more completely than previously

How do I update my windows from sp2 to sp3? I ran windows update but I don't see anything regarding sp3.
Sorry you guys have been having problems on Windows XP SP2, Bioware stated the system requirements on their website http://dragonage.bioware.com/game/ and on the box and mentioned that it requires Windows XP with SP3. Microsoft always makes "constant improvements" to their Windows (yes, bit of sarcasm there lol) and versions usually aren't backwards compatible as we've seen. So, I'd say it's more of an issue of keeping up with Microsoft than Bioware's fault.
Here's the link from Microsoft's site givine Windows XP SP update information:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389
From Microsoft's site:
"Download the latest Windows XP service pack from the Microsoft Download Center
If you have problems obtaining the service pack from Windows Update, you
can download the stand-alone update package from the Download Center.
This page will say that this installation package is intended for IT
professionals and developers. However, you can safely download this
file."
..and here's the direct download for Windows XP SP3:
http://www.microsoft...&displaylang=en
Hope this helps, happy gaming/building.

Just a word of warning to all that are thinking about getting SP3, here are my specs,
Windows XP SP3, Pent 4, 2.5 GB Ram, 1650 Pro PCI-e 512 MB, SB Audigy2 ZS, stock case and cooling, I haven't noticed my card temp over 65-70 sense I owned it. Not a Crysis machine by any means but I have had this setup for 5+ years now and have never had a major problem, and my gaming experiences have been GREAT! In how they play and how they look, I play at 1920X1200 all the time, 24 inch Acer P243W.
I was/am fully updated OS, and everything else that I can think of. I shut my security off during installs and I have no other apps running in the back ground that may cause any problems. I also maintain my computer on a regular basis ever sense I owned my machine. A weekly auto scan with Norton 2009 and with my other scans which I run myself.
I say " was " previously, because I DL'ed the TS and it wouldn't work for me, I wasen't too disappointed as I knew this was a new game so I un-installed it using all the default suggestions and then I started getting SQL library errors. I didn't have the patience too trouble shoot so I just re-formatted and now evrything is back to the was it was before the dreaded Toolset ( No Insult Intended )
So it would seem that I am meeting the requirments for the TS so why did I have problems????? Just going to wait for more updates for the TS, as I don't what to have to re-format everytime I try to DL it.
Cheers!

It just sounds like aweful toolset programming on the part of the developers, perhaps when they fix all the gamebreaking bugs, install errors and SQL errors this application has then it may be worth a revisit but as a hardcore modder I really do not feel like dealing with install problems, game breaking errors and SQL crap!!

I suppose you actually got the Toolset installer from the official page. I had a few reports of people being unable to properly download from DA social website (heard of "corrupted" packages and such) so maybe that what happens with your toolset DL. In any case, you may want to try a few things on your side :
- Make sure you "save as" (and not directly "open" or "execute") the file and launch it from wherever it was downloaded.
- Turn off any download manager, accelerators, stuff
- Eventually try with another browser, especially if you're using a recent beta release or something alike-ish
* switches her Orlesian mode on *
