I would be happy with some mix of my ME1 and ME2 squads.

Wrex is basically a king... he can't come back as a squaddie.

Liara probably will... the Shadow Broker Hunt is basically a nice seed for a ME3 plot/subplot.

Kaidan/Ashley - Maybe...I'm not super concerned if they do.

Garrus - 50/50 since he can die in ME2

Tali - 50/50 since she can die in ME2... although I would love more interaction with the quarians in ME3.

All ME2 squaddies - 50/50 since s/he can die in ME2/

The easiest way to write ME3 would be to write parts for ME2 squaddies as "supporting cast members" in the manner that they did for most of the non-recruitable ME1 squaddies in ME2.

As such, I'm betting that Liara and x number of new squaddies in ME3.

While its true that this is the easiest way for Bioware to work with, doing that would be an incredibly bad move on Bioware's part.A good story doesn't abandon main characters in the final act and replace them with new characters. Imagine if in "Return of the Jedi" Leia, Han, and Chewy just left, and Luke was saving the day with a new group of people we never heard of.

Bioware should put there energy into creating the multiple situations needed to keep the characters in, instead of creating new characters.

Imagine if in "Empire Strikes Back" Leia, Han, and Chewy just left, and Luke was saving the day with a new group of people we never heard of.

Imagine if in "The return of the Jedi", both Obi-Wan and Yoda suddenly are alive again and participating in the assault on Endor...

This is getting way too complex! dont forget Wrex is also dead for people who killed him in ME1. I dont see how Tali, Garrus or any of the SR2 Normandy (with the exception of Joker) can play a role in ME3. Think about it they would have to change the game so much depending on what characters your ME2 has live. I think in ME3 you will get some lame email from the squad members that survived. -.-

It’s quite unlikely that me3 is going to pick up right after
me2. I know we are shown this view of the reaper fleet on the move at the end,
but space is a big place, and the game could take place during the invasion (
ala dragon age). While I doubt Bioware will try and pull  "OMG! Sheppard is dead again!" on
its fans, they will have to do something similar. You can’t start a game at
level 30 with a fully upgraded and crewed Normandy 2. They have to cut you down
somehow so you can build yourself back up, with a bigger ship and badder crew. Also,
this allows for changing of class/ appearance at the beginning of the game, as
well as giving them some significant time to
move both the characters personal narratives and that of the galaxy as a
whole ahead. Mass Effect is about choices, and for the player to appreciate the
consequences of their actions, time needs to pass between games. Personally, I
think we’ll see Shepard imprisoned for treason by the alliance/council,
kidnapped by the shadowbroker, or maybe even some prothean involvement (Illos
kinda survived, there could be others).  Either
way, Shepard wakes up from cryofreezing a few years later. As for the main
story as for the game itself, instead the selling point being "assemble
your team" it’ll be more likely "unite the galaxy" (dragon yet
again) with the player challenged to solve the various persistent galaxy wide
problems (quarians/geth, merc legions, shadowbroker/Cerberus, humans/turians,
krogan/salarians) with your choices affecting the army you wield against the
reapers. Do you cure the genophage? Do you retake the quarian homeworld? Do you
****** on the turian councillor’s grave? Etc. Here’s where the live/die effects
come in. Most of the squad won’t be back as squadmates, since they need to
develop new characters to keep it interesting,  you will see them return as very important
(but also replaceable) npcs that effect your mission to gather support from
various groups. I feel that any character that returns as a squadmate will have
an alternative fill in with a similar skillset but different dialogue (miranda’s
sister, thane’s son, mordin’s nephew, samara’s other daughters, legion’s
thousands of replicable bodies). Once again, there’s probably going to be one
squadmate from every significant race + extra humans.

tali- admiral. yea, shes young, but depending on your
actions, shes pretty much jesus to the quarians. Not a squadmate, but kal’reegar
sure a **** is. Hooya.

Legion- he is the geth consciousness. He will be back.

jack- battling aria for control of omega/ the pirates and
mercs of the terminus systems

garrus- personally my favourite character, it kills me to
think he won’t be a squadmate, but the odds are against him. He’s a RI, plus he’s
already been in 2 games. I’m not sure what role he'll play, but I’m sure it
will be significant. vigilante? merc? turian military?

miranda- Her father is the richest man in the universe. You
need his support. He wants Miranda back/dead.

grunt- leader of the krogan (wrex is dead, no reason to keep
a voice actor who for 2 games for a character that might have died in the
first. He’s also pretty old and mentions grunt replacing him, and krogans
retire with a bullet).

Mordin- old, possibly dead. Leading a crack science team researching
the reapers/ leading a crack broadway team.

thane- could be dead from disease, but there also could have
been a breakthrough since him dying in an off-screen bed seems cheap. Possibly alive,
but handicapped by late cure/ artificial implants.

Liara- key. Probably breaks you out of prison or whatever. She’s
also ruthless as all hell now.

I think, Garrus, Ashley/Kaiden, Thane's son, Samara, Mordin, Liara if you had romance in first game + some new ones will be on ME3 as Squadmates. Kelly, chakwas and the dudes in engineer room who's names i have forgotten as side roles. Legion, Tali, Wrex + Grunt, Jack as pirate Queen (PiercedMonks idea) and Rachni Queen will be probably just missions where you need to rally their fleets against reapers.

Every squad mate that survived ME2 will return in ME3 at least as a cameo

Right now, only LIs have a high chance of returning as squad mates (if one returns they all do, except maybe Thane since he'll be dead soon and ME3 will most likely be set at least 1 year after ME2)

I must say it would be pretty silly if you get a whole new team *again*. If they do that once, it's fine, but I really really want my ME1/ME2 team back, except for maybe Wrex, Zaeed and Thane for obvious reasons.

I hope they don't make us recruit all new members. That was fine for this game, but I don't want to do it again. They need to focus on making the main story epic like in ME1 and resolving the subplots.

Anyway, I think Ashley/Kaiden and Liara will be back since they said they weren't in ME2 so they will survive to ME3. Plus, they were your first potential love interests.

Wrex won't be back because he is either dead already or he'll be leading the krogan. If Wrex is dead and/or you didn't keep the info to try and cure the genophage, than maybe the krogan won't help you in the final battle..

I'm not sure how many squad mates have to survive in ME2 in order for Shepard not to die (and therefore allow you to import your save to ME3), but I thought it was at least 2 have to survive. If that's the case, there are at least 4 squad members for you team. Add 1 or 2 new people and you get 5 or 6. Similarly to ME1.

If your ME2 mates survive, they'll be in ME3. If not, than you miss out on them. That's the consequence of them dieing after all. Whether or not they are in cameos, or squadmates is up for debate. Personally, I think most will be squadmates, except for maybe Thane or any DLC.

I also think it'll be interesting on what the default settings will be for ME3 or what happens if you don't do some of the loyalty missions. For example, if you don't do Legion's loyalty mission and he dies, does that mean all the Geth get the virus and now worship the reapers, thus making defeating the reapers more difficult?

The defaults for ME2 were renegade choices, so I'm guessing it'll be similar in ME3, which imo means the final battle will be pretty hard if you haven't played through ME1 and/or ME2 to gain allies.

Yes, I really hope you're right, because this is exactly what I would like to see. Especially the part about having more team mates if you actually made them survive ME2. Bigger consequences like this is exactly what ME2 is missing, except for team mates dieing during the suicide mission. But since the game is finished after that, there are no real noticable consequences for letting the majority of your team die.

Personally, I of course want most of the characters from the previous games to return. I'd also like to see missions throughout the game that have the same concept as the Suicide Mission at the end of ME2 (splitting up into Squads, designating second team leader...)

I think they kept the ME1 love interests alive in ME2 for a reason. I truly think that the survivors from ME2 and they are going to be at least the majority of the ME3 squad. They're building these characters and their story arcs for a reason. I don't think that people who are petitioning for their return have much to worry about. You can't end ME2 with less than two squadmates, plus Liara and Ashley/Kaidan, and possibly Wrex, That leaves you with a decent party of 4 or 5.

i doubt they will focus the story on recruitment as much, just to avoid being repetitive, but its definitely going to be a part of the game. ME1 didnt focus on recruitment and loyalty, but team building was still part of the process. Just because people love the characters they've already made doesn't mean they wont make new ones (does anybody really find the characters from me1 as a whole better than me2?). Lets face it: the loyalty and recruitment missions were generally far superior in to the main plot missions in both gameplay and narrative. It would be reaaaaally frustrating for a developer to to craft similar awesome missions in me3 knowing that many players will never see them. I'm sure you'll see all your old favorites, but most wont be squadmates. They will probably have a significant role, but like wrex, ash and kaiden in me2, they will have people to replace them, albeit with affects on gameplay (krogans hate you on tuchanka if you kill wrex etc). One ship cant stop the reapers in a full on fight. As the leader of the free galaxy, (admiral?) shepard is going to need some trustworthy people to lead parts of his forces (just like in the suicide mission) in addition to his personal squad. Personally, I'm looking forward to dealing with captain Valkarian and king Urdnot.

Yeah, I've been thinking it over, and I've got bets on everyone returning. Think about it. Shepard's entire crew knows about the Reapers, that they're coming, and that they're a threat to everything, and (SPOILER WARNING), by the looks of the ending of ME2, the Reapers are only a few days/weeks away. I HIGHLY doubt that anyone in the crew will just up and leave for no reason.

The whole game was about recruiting these charcacters and making them loyal. It becomes incredibly ridiculous to assume all of that was a waste of time. If that's the case then the whole game was worthless. Why recruit all these people, make them loyal, only to never see them again?

Who will return in Mass Effect 3? There's characters that have shown their loyalty to Shepard, and there's those that no one can be sure about. Let's take a look at everyone:

Jack: Doesn't seem to have anywhere else to go. If you choose to blow up the Collector base/resign from Cerberus, this may cause her to stay in the third game, because of how much she dislikes Cerberus.

Thane: Probably won't be returning because of his Kepral's syndrome. Remember, he's only got 8-12 months left on his life expectency... but will Kolyak possibly be a new squad member?

Jacob and Miranda: They were both on your team from the beginning, and are dedicated crew members of the Normandy. Miranda even directly states her resignation from Cerberus to the Illusive Man if she's in your squad when you defy his orders to take the Collector Base for your own. Most likely will return.

Grunt: A bit mixed... The email the Shaman sent you after his loyalty mission makes it a bit in between. Will Grunt return to Tuchanka, or continue on the mission? Him and Wrex could help very well with getting Clan Urdnot to help fight the Reapers. Most likely will return.

Garrus: He doesn't have much anywhere else to go either. He's already quit C-Sec, and I doubt he would go back to the freelance gang fighting business after what happened with Sidonis. Plus, he's BA. You can't have a Mass Effect game without Garrus.

Mordin: Not sure. Is he going to return to his clinic? I can't really say. But his scientific knowledge would really help with fighting the Reapers directly. Plus, he's got a huge fan following because of his fast speaking and hilarious conversations. I personally hope he returns, but am not positive if he will.

Tali: She left her service with the Migrant Fleet to re-join Shepard, and with all of those recordings she left on Haestrom, you can see that she's more comfortable doing missions with Shepard ("I wish Shepard were here."), and is inspired by Shepard also (how she wanted to use the charges to clear the debirs and compared it to how Shepard used a laser to clear some in the first game). Tali could also really help with getting the Migrant Fleet to face the Reapers with Shepard. Most likely will be returning.

Samara: After the suicide mission, if you speak to Samara, she says that she will stand by your side until the Reapers are defeated. Definitely returning.

Legion: The conversations you have with him show that he is very devoted to stopping the Reapers ("Old Machines" as he calls them), and his loyalty mission may serve towards getting the Heretics to assist you in facing the Reapers, that is, if you're a Paragon.

Zaeed: I'm not sure about this guy. The lack of conversations with him doesn't really provide much evidence on his views or beliefs. Also, the fact that he shows he's rather hot-headed during his Loyalty mission may put a fault between him and Shepard. I'm not sure he'll be returning.

What do you guys think? Any thoughts? Any information that I missed? Most of the new characters were awesome, so I really hope a lot of these people return.

Considering that Mass Effect Galaxy was originally titled "Jacob's story" I think he stays unless Bioware decides to do something really suspect. He could have been a Specter candidate to replace Shepard based on his saving the Citadel and the Council but since he was a love interest for Miranda in that story the fan boys have doomed him to mediocrity. Zaeed has no reason to stay. He is a mercenary hired at the will of TIM and once he completes his role in ME2 then he has absolutely no reason to stay.  He even jeopardizes your mission based on a personal vendetta.  Samara has no reason to stay with you either based on her obligations as a justicar and neither does Jack unless you romanced her (a good romance by the way). She basically wanted you to roam the galaxy as Capt. Jack Sparrow junior....a really high priority for Shep when the future of the galaxy itself is at stake.

Tali might be on the admiralty board of the Quarian fleet but she's also fanboy favorite so I doubt that's going to happen.  Her story will continue in ME3 as a squad mate and LI for Shepard. If Miranda was on your last mission and you destroyed the Collector base then she is back in ME3 since she told TIM to pound sand.  Plus she's on the box cover for crying out loud..... she's not going anywhere.  Legion and Grunt are good characters but it's possible you never activated them (so to speak) depending upon how you played the game.  Garrus is there until the end and I believe Liara will return because she is the ONLY character guaranteed not to die.

casey hudson said all will return in some capacity. from zaeed all the way down to kasumi as well as the original squad members in the original mass effect. there will also be new people as well. most of them, however, will be npcs that pop up somewhere as a reward for their survival.

For ME1 humans in ME2, what they did is:

1. Keep Kaiden for FemShep [Default]
2. Keep Ashley for ManShep [Default]
3. Give you Liara if you imported a character that romance her in ME1

So, by that logic, I think in ME3 it will be:

1. Keep Jacob for FemShep [Default]
2. Keep Miranda for ManShep [Default]
3. Give you Thane if you romanced him
4. Give you Jack if you romanced her
