other than the weird "peephole" effect on some of them they look fine unless you have a gigantic screen.

If anyone is wondering what this is about think of how YouTube has quality options for videos. You know how youtube videos can be blurry and how HQ or HD videos are a lot crisper? That's what his is about.

If you look at the file names for the cutscenes it says they're at 720p...or 1280x720.
It's also very grainy, I hate grain in my cinematics.

Unfortunately the resolution of a pre-rendered video [mpeg, bik, avi, whatever] doesn't dictate the quality. It can be 1280x720 but be blurry with "jpeg" artifacts because the video is compressed. The more compression is done on a video, the file size [GB, MB, etc] will be smaller and also will require a lower end computer to play; When less compression is used, the quality will be much better but at the expense of having larger file size and also more computer power to view.

The reason why this is worth complaining about is that they have cutscenes in ME2 that are rendered on the spot and we see these which are rendered exactly as we see everything else in the game, then later we get a video file cutscene and the quality can be monumental if you have even a medium-low end quality gaming PC.

Personally I can accept that there are scenes that they want to pre render. That's fine, but the QUALITY of said video is not acceptable. I remember years ago having the choice of installing high quality sounds and textures. It would be nice, but perhaps difficult to implement a similar option.

Low end gaming pc owners should not have to suffer but at the same time those of us who meet or pass the recommended hardware requirements should be allowed to take advantage of the extra pc power with some cleaner looking cutscenes.

I kinda wish they'd just render all cutscenes and spend the extra storage space on higher quality sound etc.

Oh well.

If you wanted the higher resolution movies you can bet there would be a third disc. That ups production cost which ups the price of the game. If you want the higher resolution for Mass Effect 3 let Bioware known you are willing to pay say $5 more for the third disc :P?

I noticed, but more annoying for me was how low-res the ingame model of the Normandy was. If you look out the window in Illium you can really see what I'm talking about.

Just right click and check properties and copy the link...sorry but I didn't feel like linking them.
The first 3 pics are of the prerendered cutscene when you go directly to the link and zoom into the pics actual size which is 1920x1200 you can clearly see the grainy and jagged quality.

The bottom 3 pics are ingame so you can see how crisp and clear the game looks unfortunately the prerendered cutscenes are ugly.

Hell...I got my friend to link them...

It's not film grain, it's compression artefacting. Very noticeable when there's motion. Combined with the low (for PC) resolution, it's a severe dip.

This was a big ugliness with DA too: looks like console limitations mean Bio isn't going to ship any higher bitrate and resolution versons of prerendered vids.

1680x1050, and while they're aren't crisp as could be I can't complain about them.

The videos of the Normandy docking at the citadel/flying into omega or what have you, are all very blurry. Anyone else notice this? I wonder what was wrong with making them use the in game engine like ME1...

You playing on a PC? Because it sure as hell doesn't look blurry on 360.

either way its an improvement over ME 1 with textures that didnt load until halfway into a "cutscene sequence" and then would just pop in,

I'm playing at 1900x1200 here, and they are pretty grainy. I noticed it right away. The ingame graphics are better. And I have screenshots I could post of it too. Instead of pre-render, it would have been better to just have them rendered in game. XD

Thread winner. The videos are compressed with Bink and while it's anyones guess why the choose to compress them that much, it is a good bet to assume that it was done due to hardware limitations (possibly for the 360 ? Who knows).

It's not hardware limitation, it's storage budget. First they decide how many disks they're going to ship on, and then they literally go through a decision making process which at some point involves deciding "can we actually fit this on the disk with everything else." Concessions have to be made.

Can't do a whole lot about it, other than wish they would release high quality cinimatics for PC users to download - except that they would then be alienating part of their userbase, which they would never do.

ok I understand this.. But they can make a DLC for those who want the higher rez version.. I can download it..

Still I bought the CE version. There is 3 DVDs in there. Your telling me they couldn't put better quality or elite graphics on the third dvd?  Its a wasted DVD anyhow... hardly anything of value on it.

Obsidian did it for KOTOR2 and even back then it was a gig or so. I don't see why Bioware couldn't do it in the age of high speed internet.

Yep, playing at 19200x1200 and the pre-rendered cutscenes look pretty horrendous.
