I hate writing long guides, so I'm just going to straight up tell you how to make the game really easy just by using the tactics presets.

-Always set the most important tactics at the top of the list
-Least important tactics (like activating auras) at the bottom

Tactics importance order
1. Healing and survival tactics
2. Crowd Control and Mage Killers
3. Everything else

-Heres how to start every hard fight with all mages against you dead (remember to set near top of tactics list)

Set near the very top of tactics list:

Enemy: Nearest Mage: Use: Pick one (Mana Clash, Crushing Prison, Holy Smite, Arrow of Slaying, Overwhelm, etc)

This way your team will always kill enemy mages at the start of every fight.

Healing tactics: Set the lower health tactic higher on the list to give it priority

health <10 Forcefield
health <30 Lifeward
health <50 Group Heal
health <70 Heal
health <80 Regeneration

You can tweak these numbers to your liking, and may want to add versions of self and ally

If you main as a warrior or rogue or even a mage and want endless stamina and haste set the following tactic on a support mage

Support mage tactics

hero stamina <50 rejuvination
hero stamina <20 mass rejuvination
self mana >90 activate haste, fire weapons, or any other sustained aura

- First and foremost I do not recommend the following tactic, as it makes the game way too easy
1. Buy unlimited elfroot
2. Make unlimited health potions
3. Set tactic on all party members if health is less than x% drink least powerful health poultice. 70% is a good way to never die.
4. You can do the same thing with mana potions

Warning: I highly recommend against using this tactic because your party members will rarely if ever die and the game becomes boring. I personally never use potions of any kind.

Some Additional Fun Tactics:

Tank: If health < 20 disengage

Rogue: If health < 20 feign death

Anybody: Enemy: Using ranged or magic attack: use most powerful ability
(good secondary followup to the initial enemy: mage: most powerful ability tactic)

Do you hate being cc'd or having misdirection hex on yourself, or some other debuff:
Set Alistair or a mage to the following: Hero : has curable debuff: use cleanse area, dispell, etc

Having good tactics set on your party can turn hard fights into easy ones, and eliminate the need for pausing in all but the hardest fights.

Sorry, but those tactics hardly trivialize the game. Sure it's easy, but there are a lot more ways to set tactics.

Like foe: Imobilized -> Below the Belt/Stone Fist/Riposte/Overpower etc.

Foe: Sleeping -> Horror

etc.

Its only a brief guide to tactics like I mentioned. But the tactics I listed, alone, make the game significantly easier. Every fight I am in my party auto-kills enemy mages and ranged attackers, everyone in my party stays in high health, and my main character never runs out of stamina and is free to dominate the battlefield. I really have to stress tactics order as being very important as allowing an enemy mage to get off even one spell can make a fight significantly harder.

I never give my party any "smart" tactics. There is nothing more depressing than telling someone to use a specific skill on a specific enemy and then suddenly having him/her go running headlong into a group of darkspawn, setting off traps and who knows what else, and possibly wiping out the party while they're at it. Or something like two archers using both their Arrows of Slaying on the same "nearest" mage, who just happens to be a boss/elite.

I do use heal/regenerate tactics though, and I set sustained spells/skills to <90 or self:any, so I could turn off some sustained spells during fights or have my characters automatically use them again in case the more important ones get dispelled. Lifeward is a spell you should be spamming before battle. Mass Rejuvenation should be cast at the beginning of the battle if your mages are more offensive.

Most of my other tactics are heat-of-the-battle type, mostly enemy nearest:use nukes/skills commands. The last few slots are elite/boss-exclusive. I personally see to everything else.

Sometimes the best tactics are the simplest ones. Healing and Killing Mages asap is more important than your sleep + horror tactic or your shatter combo tactics.

Lol I rarely every rely on tactics, just pausing.

And Shattering is an awesome combo. Cone of Cold + Virulent Walking Bomb + Stonefist can wipe out a huge group of enemies.

To be honest, the only tactics worth using are for sustainables, and easy non-friendly fire spellcombos that you can't be bothered to do yourself.

For someone that likes to play their main character without controlling the rest of their party unless absolutely required, tactics are great. I can see how tactics arent important to you if you like to pause and micromanage your party.

Tactics are just done badly here. If your health drops below 50% with a tactic to use a potion, and you're running across a room at a mage, you'll finish attacking the mage first. It should be stricter instead of trying to be smart.

What in the world are you talking about? I clearly state that healing tactics should be above mage killing tactics. The scenario you describe does not happen to me ever. I wouldnt post these tactics if they did not work.

With the tactics I have shared, as simple as they are, all enemy mages are killed off within the first 5 seconds automatically by your party and healing is top notch even when enemy mages survive (rare)

What I'm saying is often the tactics malfunction. I'm not talking about you/your tactics, rather the system in the game.

To be fair, that can also work in your favor if you understand how the AI works. It is, after all, why kiting strategies work so well--the Ogre has to finish his attack before he can do anything else. The problem would go away if they just let you attack on the move.

Im using the advanced tactics mod, so my tactics rarely if ever screw up.

Its funny that you never included the mod in your initial post, making discussion on things that arent bounded by the same experience. Later on, you reveal your mods as some form of justification. What are you driving at exactly? Attention?

I never really have a problem with the stock combat tactics menu.  I usually setup for simple basic attacking using every ability or spell possible and it works fine.

Healing is something I micromanage unless I have a mage like Wynne dedicated for healing.

It does take some time to get used to the combat tactics.  It took me at least 1 full game to fully understand everything.  really the only difficult setups are with mages.  Warriors and rogues just do not seem to have that many abilities or talents to worry about.

Yep, I agree ... This is why there are 3 custom tactics lists you can set-up.for each toon, depending on the situation. Shale is great example to use cos she has so many sustains that access different abilities. Need rocks thrown about? Pre-set a custom ranged package. Need close quarter party buffs? Pre-set another custom package for that.. During battle you can pause and swap custom tactics packages in an out.
Just so everyone is clear, I use the Advanced Tactics mod also ...
