Yeah but that stuff you actually have to think about in order for it to not make sense. The flimsy gasmasks in a hostile environment are just staring you in the face the whole time you're there and are a little more difficult to ignore.

Don't be taken in by hollywood's exploding people in a vacuum. Its fake like having sound in a space battle, no air=no sound.

Enjoyed the read, 2 minutes and you can still be okay without any long term damage :o

How the heck do you survive in cold vaccum with just a mouth breather?

Does it matter? It's a video game. Don't nit pick the minor details. Makes the game less enjoyable. If it bothers you that much. don't play the game :)

not only would your blood freeze, but your eyes would pop out of your head from the pressure.

But SHHHH.... we're in the future.

This has been said before in this thread, but people still aren't getting it: your squad-mates are NEVER in a vacuum. Anytime they wear the gas masks they're just in an environment without breathable air.

Wrong. AFAIK Legions loyalty quest is in very low pressure enviroment. Geth are not bothered by lack of air, temperature and pressure.

Collector Ship.  You clearly walk in through a completely open doorway.  No airlock.  The ship's drive core is offline, meaning no Mass Effect fields holding the environment in.  EDI even mentions something to that effect regarding the pods on the ceilings on your way through the ship.  The ship would have been completely depressurized anywhere Shepard's squad goes.

Not to mention that there's an N7 mission where one of your squadmates state that the air is toxic.  Generally you wouldn't want to expose your body, especially your eyes and ears, to toxic chemicals.

I was about to disagree, but then started thinking... Yes there has to be some gas compressed that would create the pressure. Since geth do not require such, nor does the machines running it, why would they build their space station to have pressurised air or any gas atmosphere? Its not logical. So yes, Geth spacestation is most likely cold vacuum just like space around it.

IIRC the toxic gas there was is also very harmful/corrosive kind. VERY Baaad for eyes.

Sure, but most people dont understand this stuff.   Black Holes (Singularities) are weird.  Its a place were physics breaks down, you even get dual realities at some point.

Lets stick to the simple stuff.  If you have exposed flesh to a vacuum...like the inside of the collector vessel you are going to be uncomfortable.  This is like not needing scuba gear while working underwater, a child wouldn't believe it.  It is not unreasonable to remark that  a character going out into a vacuum in just a leather strap is retarded game design.  Its not like Bioware has not faced this before.  In KOTOR the characters don suits in the underwater Manaan sequence (much hated as it was), a similar mechanism could have been employed in these cases.  It would have added to the sense of enviroment if done right.

Bioware is the best game design company in the world in my opinion, and has changed the RPG genere an amazing amount.  This case of gas masks in ME2, was stupid and unrealistic though.  By complaining about them hopefully we can advoid such mistakes in the future.

I hate quoting myself, but I say this again.

"ITS JUST A VIDEO GAME" argument DOES NOT HOLD WATER when it comes to Scifi and Fantasy. What makes good scifi and fantasy game/book/movie good, is that it is somewhat BELIEVABLE. There has to be something familiar in it that DOES NOT BREAK THE IMMERSION. Utterly retarded things like being without protection on vacuum and so on are stuff that do this.

Scifi and Fantasy have their liberties, over-the-top technology and glorification of some space-related stuff normal folk does not really understand (and scientist either), and fantasy has demons, magic, insane fighting- and acrobatic skills and whatever... but those belong to those genres, gasmask on vacuum and such idiocy do not, its just retarded and underestimation of the audiences intelligence.

This coming from geek whose life circles around scifi and fantasy, movies and books and related.

That's actually even worse. If you have an atmosphere of some kind, you're going to have rapid heat transfer. Now what are the odds of the derelict reaper ship in high orbit, the unpressurized collector ship in deep space, as well as the surface of every single planet you visit having exactly the right temperature for humans to function normally?

The problem is not that it's not practical, it's that it looks stupid. One guy is armored like a tank, and the girl next to him is wearing a g-string bikini and a plastic respirator mask.

Ok then, shall will nit pick the fact that going the speed of light would not only stretch you out like a pancake, but would also kill you? Not to mention that when you got back from going the speed of light, people that you know and love would be dead and gone?

How about the Terminus heavy weapon? How can you launch what is essentially a black hole and not get sucked in and killed? Hmm? Why not discuss how far fetched that is?

...or just tolerance for bad game design.  I mean I dont care if its designed poorly, because its just a game.  Who needs a good story or enviroment when I can use my IMAGINATION.  Shucks, who needs VIDEO GAMES.

The fact that ME2 has some stupid design direction does not invalidate anyones opinion that its a great game, I think its amazing.  On the other hand a walk inside a collector ship through a hole to deep space... is not so amazing.

Like I said earlier, those things you actually have to think about to find them weird. Inexplicable lack of hardsuits in a hostile environment on some party members and not others jumps out at you right away, and is difficult to ignore.

Yes, its a space marine game ™, but I wish they had kept continuity from the first and just put everybody in an environmental suit.

But they are just as valid a discussion. So please, lets dicsuss those things as well and utterly forget that its a game that has more to it than things that are not practical.

Let's forget it has a story. Let's forget its got a great combat system (imho). Let's forget its got a multitude of side missions that let you know your squadmates a little better. Let's go ahead and talk about ALL the impractical things that are in the game.

Those belong to the Scifi liberties. You have to really think about them to find them as flaws. Plus there are theoretical ways to go faster than light, wormholes etc... Only theories, but that is enough for Scifi to effectively utilize without breaking immersion. Again, a very basic physics like unprotected on vacuum or toxic enviroment is just retarded and has nothing to do with SCIENCE FICTION. Think about what that name tells.

ALSO Black hole does not suck things in like a vacuum. It does have strong gravity like stars and such, but it is not something like movies vision. It has an even-horizon. Outside nothing happens other than gravition pull but if you step inside it you can no longer leave and get sucked in. Thats how I understood it anyway.
