I really really hate achievements. Sure some of them can be fun, such as completing a game on a high difficulty. But in a single player RPG it really just pisses me off. I'm in the middle of doing something all all of a sudden 1/5:th of my screen is spammed with a "HELLO THERE! CONGRATULATIONS!
YOU MANAGED TO SHOOT SOMEONE IN THE HEAD! YOU'RE THE BEST!". It really takes the feeling out of the game and I've hated achievements ever since I first layed my eyes on them. It would be ok if it only showed up in the achievement-log but this is constantly popping up during the game.

Either way, this wasn't supposed to be a rage-post about my relationship with achievements but rather a thread with a question.

Is there any way to remove this abomination?
Tried finding information in the manual, but I guess most people like this ****.
Will it be removed if I cheat? I'd prefer not to cheat as I hate even that almost as much as I hate the achievements themselves, but if it's a last resort I'll do it.
I assume it's also against the LUA to mod the game in order to remove them popping up, if not then any chance of pointing me in the direction of such a mod?

Thanks in advance.

Guess not.

I guess I'll attempt some things that might work myself.

Yea, you can remove them. Use the program in this thread social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/106/index/834703. I don't remember which section it is, but if you search for "hint", there are lines about notification msg's. I think you can modify the line to set Enabled = False. I haven't tried it for the notications, but I did do it for the planet scanning hints.

Thank God there is another achievement hater out there! I'd also like to know how to disable these pesky pop-ups.

Step by step directions:

1. Run the Coalesced Editor (linked above) and point it at your ME2 install directory so it can find the ini file

2. In the Search Panel, type AchievementChange and hit enter (or click the S button). In the large text box in the upper right, you should now see "(nmType="AchievementChange"...

3. At the end of this text there is a close parenthesis, add the following text before the parenthesis  ,Enabled=FALSE  (don't forget the comma)

4. Click the button "Rebuild Coalesced" at the top to save the change.

5. Play ME2 and enjoy the silence when you headshot an enemy!

Note that this only disables achievement progress notifications, finishing an achievement will still display a notification. To disable that too... search AchievementUnlocked and follow the same steps.

Technical details:

In the BIOGame section of the coalesced.ini, there is a group of settings called SFXGame.BioHintSystemBase

Two arrays are initialized by items in this section named m_aHints and m_NotificationData

These are the settings for the hints reminding you to take cover, to reload, to level up... and notifications telling you when you've received paragon points, renegade points, updated progress on an achievement and so on.

These can be disabled one by one, by adding the attribute Enabled with a value of FALSE.

There is also a global setting m_bEnabled that you can set to FALSE to completely disable ALL notifications! (including journal updates, codex updates, credit updates..., not recommended)

Edit: This doesn't work after all.

The m_NotificationData settings don't have an Enabled property.

I can't find a way to hide notifications, but you can speed them up by changing the DisplayTime value to something like 0. They will disappear immediately after appearing.

Is there some trick to getting the game to read the newly edited config file? I tried using that editor app to set "Enabled=false" on all the m_aHints items, but I still get the hints. I also tried setting m_bEnabled to FALSE but still got the messages. I'm making the edits, then clicking "Rebuild Coalesced" from the menu at the top of the window.

It should read it as soon as you rebuild. I know m_bEnabled works for me, but on the m_ahints, I think there is actually 2 different keys for those, so make sure you get both.

I did some more testing, and now I'm thinking it's working, but just not for the message I wanted.

Just now I tried disabling then testing the m_aHints named "PlanetScanHint" and "LaunchProbeHint", and that appears to have worked just fine.

Last night, I was trying to disable, in particular, the message "Press and hold (F) to end the mission" that pops up when you opt to stay in a mission zone after completing the objectives. While none of the m_aHints had names that seemed to directly apply to that, I hoped that "MeleeHint" was the right one, and when that failed, I tried disabling them all with m_bEnabled set to FALSE. However, this one hint continued to pop up.

Any idea how (or if it's even possible) to disable this particular hint?

Yea, I think there are some that just can't be disabled. I messed around with different settings for 2 or 3 hours and couldn't figure anything out.

I just started playing Mass Effect 2 and wanted to disable the achievement notifications, however I cannot get the above to work. I have tried just about every combination of caps/nocaps for the "false" and putting a space before and after the comma, but I still get the notifications.

Here is what it looks like for me in the editor, should this work?

The worst part is that I tested it so many times on the first level that I got the headshot achievement, so now I no longer have an easy way to check if it worked or not.

Sorry, it doesn't work after all.

The best we can do right now is make the achievement notification disappear immediately after appearing.  See my post above.

Well, that certainly sucks. Maybe in a future patch...

I hate how they break the immersion, but even worse is that they can affect how you play. A headshot achievement pops up, and suddenly you're almost subconciously trying to get more headshots instead of just playing/enjoying the game.

I jsut confirmed it, none of this works unfortunately.

Man i'm so pissed off. I HATE achievements, and what I hate most of all is constantly getting spammed with immersion breaking text. ....
