Hi, I've been looking fro video cards for dragon age but I'm not sure exactly which ones will work. I don't care too much about the graphics, so I don't need a particularly high end one, I'd rather have one that's inexpensive and that the game will run with.  Two of the more inexpensive ones I was looking at were the ATI 4550 or 4650, but I'm not sure if these would work.  If anyone knows what cheaper video cards it does run with, could you please post the names and give me a link to a website that sells them?

I have had an ATI Radeon 4850 for some time, after I ditched Nvidia (had been with them for years). It is not the cheapest card out there, nor is the most expensive. I think it's a good mid-range option that seems to provide ample performance for DA:O, ME1 and everything else I play. I still use a mid-sized CRT display, so if you have a huge widescreen LCD you may want something with a bit more oomph.  A roughly equivalent Nvidia card would be the 9800GTX+.

Both the above cards are priced at around the £100-£120 mark, on Amazon UK.

I'm looking for something even cheaper than that however, the recommended spec is the Radeon 3850, do you have any idea how affordable it is?

3850? About £80 here in the UK. It might be enough for these games, but the longer term situation will get tighter sooner. All depends on what you can afford now.

In this price bracket, an Nvidia alternative would be a 9600 GT, if you prefer Nvidia over ATI.

On my first suggestion, I would take the ATI card.  For this cost level, it's a closer game.  Might even suggest the Nvidia.  Deciding aspect might be your motherboard, as some favour one graphics card type over others.  Shouldn't.  But do.

There are articles already published here on the forum for reference that cover video cards.

So, I'm thinkiong of going with the radeon 4650. According to that ranking list the 4600 series will run, is that going to be sufficient?

They do indeed handle the game very well, and are priced at a bargain cost. I like the newer card that is replacing the HD 4670 quite well, also -- that's the HD 5670.

Radeon 4650 is the arse end of the current ATI range. No matter What the resident fanboi (Gorath) will tell you, it's a very poor, low end card. He tells people how good it is to justify the fact that he bought one. Sadly Gorath does not have a pot to ****** in and insists upon telling people that he knows best about graphics cards based upon what he reads in the tech websites.

I'll answer any questions in private mail for those confused. (BSc M$ technet ).

I'll give you no advice other than look to your purse. Get the best you can afford as it will all change soon.

But I beg you don't ever buy a 4650 or 4670. This man is steering you to burn your money.

I'm a professional systems builder who sells over 50 units a quarter.

Tom's Hardware isnt exactly reputable either yet I only see him quoting it. Used to run a PC shop years back before recession and we used to get so many arse products with "Tom's Hardware Recommended" stickers on the boxes (think old ECS mobos that ran 33% slower than their counterparts, or Celerons!).

But you are correct the 4650 is passable only. And even then you can purchase better for same price or slightly more $ (and I do mean slightly maybe $5-10).

Alright, well what you reccomend for an affordable graphics card that will run the game well (I'm thinking less than 100$ U.S.)

Nvidia Geforce 9600GT.  While I have seen them at 133$ or more, have also seen them as low as 84.99 USD on Amazon.  Hunt thoroughly for the bargain(s).
Alternative:-
Ati Radeon HD3850.  Again price varies (have seen 80-100+ dollar prices), so same applies here.  Check for the bargains.
Normally these days I recommend ATI, especially for value for money.  But at this level of the market, I think it's a closer run thing.  I say both options are good, so pick the one your research tells you your OS/motherboard/games that you play is happier with.  As always, ensure specifications are correct for you, as there can be some variations with model ranges.

If I had to pick an Nvidia card to give you the best bang for your buck within a 100 dollar budget, I'd recommend this one instead of the 9600:
www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx

The 9800 are really solid cards and they're not too expensive anymore these days.

In total, that's over the 100 dollars specified (when including shipping)! However, if you (OP) can get a 9800GT for under a 100 or you can stretch the extra few bucks then it may be worth the extra 10-30 USD.

Only problem then is, if you can stretch to a 9800GT.... it's not much further to a 9800GTX or 9800GTX+ (which I compare with ATI Radeon HD4850), which is where (I think) things start getting really good. There's always that little bit further... :)

I bought a ATI 4670 after Xmas, specifically to get an old desktop of mine to meet minimum specs to run DA:O. (also bought an extra gig of Ram). (My laptop has a cheap intel Graphics unit which won't run the game)

My desktop is an old PC, with Intel Duo Core 1.8Ghz, 2Gb Ram - and frankly with the 4670 it runs great. I have all graphics settings on max, with minimal glitches in the graphics (okay I turned persistant gore off, as well as downloaded a mod to get rid of the annoying weapons effects - as they were distracting)

So - if you are looking at a card that will play DA:O - my experience is that the 4670 will play it just fine (on my system). Did I plan ahead for future games - no. I expect to buy a new desktop in the next year or two so this is very much a card bought specifically for running DA:O - with minimum $$$ expenditure.

YMMV.

With a more up to date system, and still wanting a Mainline Level card, the newer HD 5670 is the one that has more legs for future game releases, as already referenced here, by myself, and others, but your situation made the HD 4670 better for you. I'm glad that you are pleased with it.

{I still haven't checked on the benchmarks for the Geforce 9600 GSO that was the next in line in that Toms Hardware article and then showed up at Newegg (odd, unknown brand = "Zotac") for $60 before rebate, and $40 after rebate.}
