gamers reported experiencing the "Disk Unreadable" error. I am hoping
that this thread can be used as a focal point wherein anyone experiencing this
issue can report it under the watchful eye of the games developers, and
possibly learn from the fruits of my research into the issue.
First and foremost, the error is more commonly referred to as an "Open
Tray error" and is recognized by Microsoft as such. If you wish to report
that you are experiencing the problem to Microsoft, explaining that you are experiencing
a "Disc unreadable error" will elicit an immediate response of
"please return your product to the store from which you purchased it for a
replacement." Basically, they will refuse to help you.
Second, I must emphasize that this is not an isolated incident. Many gamers, in
all countries, are experiencing this particular issue with this particular
game. Also there is no guarantee that replacing the game for a new copy will
solve the problem. I myself have been through 5 copies of Mass Effect 2 in an
effort to resolve this issue and been met with slim to nill success. You are of
course welcome to keep trying, I wouldn't presume to stop you. I am merely
hoping to save this community some potentially wasted time.
Now, regarding a solution, I have researched in depth all potential methods to
fix this problem. Everyone from Microsoft to 10 year olds on Youtube have
posted ways to fix the issue and surprisingly, Microsoft's solution is the
least helpful. Having attempted all of the "fixes" myself, I hope
that my explanations are helpful.
The Microsoft solution:
http://support.xbox....tegory=hardware
To sum up what Microsoft suggests:
1. Make sure the disc is clean. (really? wow..never would have thought of that)
2. Try a different game. (Which helps me play ME2 how?)
3. Clear your system cache. (Just in case something in your cache is "clogging" up the disc drive.....)
4. Remove the hard drive. (I think they are just making up solutions now)
5. Disconnect any "memory units" (See 4...)
6. Request a disc replacement. (Shouldn't this have been done first?)
7. Request a repair (or in other words...we lied, you can't fix this problem)
Just incase you do actually want to send your Xbox 360 in for a repair, here is
the link to get you started:
http://support.xbox....spx?step=repair
The "Buy my product" solution:
http://ezinearticles...rror&id=2714277
According to this and the majority of other websites. Microsoft will charge you
$150 for the repair and it will take between 2 to 6 weeks for them to return
the Xbox to you. While the cost is actually more along the lines of $90-$130
(given that your Xbox isn't also RRoD'd), the time estimate is unfortunately
absolutely true. Microsoft takes its time fixing Xbox's, way more time than it
actually takes.
So some entrepreneurial arse decided he would make a booklet / CD set where he
explained how to manually solve any problem you might ever experience with your
Xbox 360. Not a bad idea, props to him for doing it, but the fact is that some
nobody is making a profit off of your misfortune...and that's a reward most
people don't think he deserves.
However, If you actually want to give it a shot...the link to the product is:

Best of luck to ya.
The Amateur solution:
http://www.fixya.com...open_tray_error
http://www.ehow.com/...tray-error.html
etc...etc...etc...
The general amateur fix revolves around cleaning a special part of the disc, or
cleaning the laser lens inside the Xbox 360's optical drive with a "Q
Tip". Speaking from experience, neither of these solutions provide a
reliable result....but what do you expect from amateurs? Feel free to give it a
shot, but remember...scratch the lens inside your Xbox and your definitely
screwed.
Finally, the Youtube Solution:
Sorry I cant recall the links to all the videos I watched.
While I can't provide links, I will save you the trouble. 75% of the videos
related to the "open tray error" or the "disc unreadable
error" are snot-nosed brats complaining about how they have the problem
and proving it with a video. 20% are ad's for products like the Xbox 360 Repair
Guide mentioned earlier. The last 5% are actually good-natured people who have
had the problem and found a solution (all-be-it temporary solution, but a
solution none the less).
Within these good-natured helpful video's, one solution I tried actually
worked. Granted it doesn't work every time, and it certainly isn't a permanent
fix, but it had definitely worked when nothing else seems to....not to mention
it is definitely stress relieving.
The solution I'm referring to is actually hitting your Xbox. No not beating the
snot out of it...but giving it a couple dozen aggressive taps over the disc
drive while the CD is being "read."
I swear it actually works...usually...
So there you have it....the fruits of my research have told me to repeatedly
hit my Xbox while the CD is loading....and it works...
Hope this actually helps some of you who are having this issue, and even if it
doesn't...at least you have a head start on where to look to solve your
problem. Please feel free to just throw a word in if you are one of the many
gamers that this issue is affecting, or even if you have your own solution.
Regardless of your reason for reading this....Thanks for your time, and have a
good night.
