Is it just be, or does Sten complain and doubt the PC everytime the main storyline progresses? I'm working on gathering an army, and all he keeps saying is how we should be going for the archdemon, how the party isn't living up to the stories of grey wardens, etc...
Are there alternative actions/choices that I'm missing or is Sten just a big dummy? (Oddly enough his approval rating is at 62 right now).
Sten, the big noisy complainer.

Do his companion quest and he lightens up. A lot.
He is quite enjoyable after.
But no it's not just you.

Sten is concerned about destroying the Archdemon. Apparently he doesn't realize it sort of takes a bit to gather forces and the like.
I agree though, him and Morrigan are way too high maintenance. I don't mind neutral kinds of people but complainers get to stay at camp and stare at the trees.

Talk to them a lot and give them gifts. Once oyu do their quest everybody is easy to maintain, I have morrigan at 90 with a good character. And maybe avoid the "I don't want a reward" answers, tend to annoy the crap out of all the neutral/evil characters.
They really change their personality if you get them very high, best do all of their quests/dialogues early before quests start to roll-in. morrigan becomes more submissive, sten stops complaining, etc, and you get to reply to some of their complaints with answers which reduce the negative points you receive.

Morrigan is at 100 for me and I'm good. Thing is I'm Chaotic Good. I'll do whatever is right to accomplish my goals, do what's right or for the greater good.
