Viper versus Vindicator for non-soldiers

Previously I picked the Vindicator battle rifle and I was most impressed, it seemed to perfectly fill a gap that my arsenal of handcannons, Tempests and Scimitars had. I've been doing some meta-testing with the Viper and I'm considering taking it for this playthrough, partially for RP reasons (I got the idea of a Biotic assassin from Thane) but mainly to handle the long range issues Vanguards have.
I've tried the Mantis and I just didn't like it. The rate of fire took the p***. I was, however, rather impressed with the Viper's RoF. I'm a little worried about it's weakness to barriers (as my Vanguard has no abilities or ammos that will deal with this) and I'm a little concerned how the Viper will handle firefights compared to the Vindicator. I'm also not a fan of replaying large selections of the game so I don't want to make a duff choice here.
Thoughts?

This time around I think I'll equip the Vindicator. More accurate at range than the Avenger and leaves the closer range full-auto death spray to the Tempest.

Comparing the Avenger and Vindicator rifles, they are useful in different circumstances as opposed to the Vindicator superseding the Avenger outright. The Avenger is a short-mid range spray-n-pray, the Vindicator is a mid-long range aimed shooter.
I generally use the Vindicator for mission where mid-long range firefights are the staple. However, there are missions where the Vindicator's range isn't so practical.
For instance, on the Derelict Reaper mission, my Insanity Sentinel+AP ammo used the Avenger instead as most battles boil down to spraying down the masses of husk at close range before they crawl all over you.
The defacto tactic for her was to shoot off the armour then smack the unprotected husk with a 2-second CD Throw (instakill).
The Tempest SMG isn't anywhere as hot as the Avenger AR when it comes to spraying down husks, armour or health.
There's plenty of room to retreat so the Scions aren't a real problem as long as you stay far and dodge.

I think I'd better point out, however, that I wasn't all that impressed with the Avenger. It didn't even seem to pack the punch the Tempest had, and looking at the stats, I can see why - The Tempest packs more punch per shot and has a higher rate of fire, only falling down on recoil.
If I take Assault Rifles, it will be Vindicator all the way. My Vanguard has close range fighting covered.
I'm really not sure what to take. Ordinarily I'd go for a battle rifle-esque gun anyway but the Viper is not far off being a battle rifle with a scope.

With a Vanguard I'd go for the Vindicator. Fits the closer ranged combat that is the playstyle of the Vanguard. Even as an Adept I go with Assault Rifles.
That's the main reason I picked the Vindicator last time. The only reason I'm considering the Viper this time is the fact that I kept switching to my Tempest the second enemies got to mid-range.
Sometimes I fight at long range with my Vanguard, particularly when there are more than 3-4 enemies grouped, just to thin the herd.

The Tempest SMG recoil messes up your accuracy and effective damage at anything past knife range when fired on auto, and even attempting to burst fire wouldn't help a lot. The Avenger can fire on auto without losing too much accuracy.
For Insanity Derelict Reaper, I tried switching between Tempest and Avenger (to maximise ammo), and Avenger wins outright at midrange (cos you don't want the husks getting anywhere near), I eventually stuck with Avenger and only switch to Tempest when Avenger ammo runs low.
With Avenger I go: burst-burst-burst-splatter (Throw)
With Tempest I go: burst-pause-burst-pause-burst-splatter, taking a good deal longer to put down a husk because of the recoil.
Additional Notes:
By the time I reached Derelict Reaper, I have fully upgraded both AR & SMG. Besides the 5 x 10% damage upgrades, the weapon class upgrades were:
AR: Penetration (+25% vs armour/barrier/shield) & Accuracy
SMG: Shield Pentration (+50% vs barrier/shield) & Extra Rounds.
Since on Insanity, all the husks (and Scion) had armour, no surprise AR wins.

Good point. I won't be playing on insanity though (I've never been a huge fan of all my enemies requiring whole clips to take down) and I like using biotics throughout the fight rather than the end of it.
Still, I'm still considering ARs. The above situation however, I can't help feeling that ARs would be the wrong weapon to be using altogether, as if there are so many raw fire rate is the only answer, Particle Cannon at range would be my choice until they got up close.
