one thing i find interesting is that asians never complain about stuff like this even though they are almost never represented, and when they are, they are represented as basically white people with asian faces.

is there a sociological reason for this? are blacks enculturated to have an inflated sense of entitlement? it certainly seems this way to me.

I have thought about this from time to time. However, to put the struggle of Asian-Americans in context with African-Americans is absurd. There is nothing about having a sense of entilement.  If you care to discuss this more, you can email me.

Jacob didn't bother me one bit. If he was always eating, sleeping, and lusting white women. That would be a different story....

Captain America is white because when I think of American, I think of a white dude. Since he represents America, despite the fact that Americas only like 70% white, a white guy would still be the most apt.

When I can think of American. I don't think of a "white dude". I actually think of a group of people.

Oh and you're an idiot. Look at when Captain America was released. African-Americans were second class citizens.

When I think of america, the first word that comes to mind is absurd. I wouldn't have it any other way though.

I didn't read this whole thread... did anyone figure out what "disreputable hand embracing" is supposed to mean?

Probably that "terrorist fist jab" that Shepard and Jacob share when they talk about hitting the bar for some drinks if they survive the upcoming suicide mission.

Honestly, is it the thought of a black man wanting to get wasted after surviving the impossible that bothers PC people ...
or that he said it with slang?

It's because he is black,a pretty stupid reason but thats about right in most cases so I'll just go with that. I have no probs with Jacob besides the fact that he's a pretty boring character, loyalty mission wasnt too bad though. But on the other hand, I find all the humans boring aside from Shepard & maybe conrad. And that one marine at citadel over exaggerating that bullet.

kaidan ain't white, I can tell you that now =] even kaidan's a japanese name for "ghost story" I think

That was the straw that broke the camel's back.
I finally deleted that offending piece of trivia from the wiki.
It's a wiki, so someone's going to put it back in, but at least I can feel satisfied for now.

Kaidan is NOT a Japanese given name, it's only a noun - a handful of words, actually - but nothing any sane Japanese person (or failing that, according authorities) would name any person, let alone their own child.

And the pronunciation makes it obvious that it's an (or rather: the most) unusual spelling for the Gaelic name Caden (to use to most common form), which may be some weird nod to fans of The Ring or whatever, but doesn't suddenly turn it into a Japanese name.

The only (clearly) Japanese person in the ME universe so far (other than maybe some unimportant people on the Citadel in ME1) is Jiro Toshiwa, whose spelling makes me cringe on several levels and whose slightly weird surname I'll give the benefit of the doubt of maybe being a rare regional thing, but that's all beside the point.

And of course Kasumi is a legid Japanese name as well.

I could be wrong but wasn't captain america created during WW1 or WW2? I mean, wouldn't it make sense for him to be white in an almost all white military? So the chances of him being anything else would be very very slim... I mean if there was a super soldier in the Chinese military who so happened to be a Navajo I would be confused and frustrated and all kinds of head spinning would be going on.

That was my point. However, newcomplex is talking about the composition of the United States today.

Honestly, whats with the big nostrils and loudmouthed, disreputable hand embracing. When I first heard the news that Jacob was black I thought it would be a revolution in gaming. Instead I get the same dissapointment I had with coal train in gears of war. When oh when will the day come that a video game will feature a logical, reserved super genius that happens to be a man of significant colour. It must be EA's influence because I honestly thought bioware was not of this same corruption it appears I was wrong. It's part of the reason people dont like Jacob too.

I must say in the context of video games I HATE BLACK PEOPLE

well, someone told me it was a reference to Dragon Age. Although I know what part they are talking about I highly doubt the OP meant it to be that. It just seems so out of context. I'm falling in love with the idea that it is a random jumble of words from a mad-man... I mean... Just read the first post again. Something is just not right about it. It's slightly scary and slightly crazy, like that movie Eraserhead.

I'd like to know as well.

I thought Jacob was pretty decent actually.  Not as well developed as I would prefer, but then again, few of the characters were.

I think people who have a problem w/ Jacob  having any tinge of "blackness" (although at this point I think it makes more sense to term it as an "urban aesthetic") are way over sensitive.  Jacob is really far from a gansta cliche in my eyes.  When it's even present (which is in maybe 3-4 lines of dialog), Jacob's mild urban dialect  is alot more "white" than half of the white guys I know under thirty in similar social situations.

Jacob is fine. I think he portrays who he is quite well. Not just a black person, but an ex-alliance now Cerberus war hero. I don't think he's portrayed in any bad light.

The only reasons I'm not fond of him is because his powers suck, and compared to some of the other side characters, his story is pretty bland. Nothing very exciting. He was more interesting on my male shep though.

I never thought of Jacob as the "generalized black guy" he to me seemed like the only out of the few people who I thought I could trust my first play threw. He doesn't go "Yo dawg u naw oi i feel brah, u nuz wat i sayin" **** I'm black and I can't stand that kind of talk, it's why I couldn't stand the Cole Train in Gears of War.

Also your way of thinking to even consider seeing it as racist means your racist yourself man. You need to look past that kind of crap. Now if he wore a KFC shirt, had a giant carton of watermelons and a small FTL car with "bling" and had rap music turned up and had his pants down to his ankles (disgusting btw) then I would be at BioWares throat.

“Whatchoo talkin' bout, Willis?” (sorry I couldn’t resist)

I don’t know where you get the loudmouth bit or this disreputable hand embracing, did I miss something? He is one of the few voices of reason on your crew, voicing concerns about certain companions you recruit but always supporting your decision. Jack is more of a loudmouth than he is. As for his nose, I just don’t see an issue. He looks like an averaged out looking African-American to me. True he isn’t your genius nerd but I never expected him to be. That assumption wasn’t based on his skin color either.

I like Jacob, even if I don’t use him since his character isn’t that great power wise to my other choices which is messed up considering he’s the first companion you meet in the game.
