I'm an african american and I'm not sure what stereotypes he's talking about that offended him wrt to Jacob. I found his character to be, if anything, too bland and straightforward. He's just a solid guy, what's wrong with that.
I was mildly annoyed at the fact that his father abandoned him, because that's a stereotype, but, really, nearly every character in the game has mommy/daddy/family issues, so it's not like they were going for tired racial generalizations.
I don't see what the problem is with Jacob's character AND the artwork on him was very realistic. First time I've seen a black character in a game w/a realistic black American hairstyle and -- the best part -- razor bumps. Good work BioWare.
well, you could say that about any cosmetic anomaly, i guess. The human characters give us a frame of reference, as such it's important that they have little touches with which we in the here and now can identify. Not saying razor bumps are essential any character with dark skin but the rest of this character was clearly modelled on modern day african-american man, so adding such a detail adds an element of realism, as it's a common thing.

I still didn't take Jacob on most of the missions, though. I couldn't bring myself to trust any cerberus employees, even though I felt sympathetic towards Jacob.

I must say in the context of video games I HATE BLACK PEOPLE
lol so racist
Jacob is a cool guy imo, his powers suck though.

I think what the OP meant to say is:
"I have been brainwashed by the mainstream media to assume that any black character in any medium is there to fulfill the role of the 'token black guy' and therefore there must be something racist about his portrayal. I will now stare deeply at Jacob's character model for hours and invent things to get self-righteous about because my primary mode of discourse with other human beings is primarily based on condescension that results from my lazy thinking."
This is so spot on. Almost wish I'd said it myself.

I think people who have a problem w/ Jacob having any tinge of "blackness" (although at this point I think it makes more sense to term it as an "urban aesthetic") are way over sensitive. Jacob is really far from a gansta cliche in my eyes. When it's even present (which is in maybe 3-4 lines of dialog), Jacob's mild urban dialect is alot more "white" than half of the white guys I know under thirty in similar social situations.

WTF??? Jacob is far from your typical video game black guy stereo type. Loudmouther? We must've been playing two different versions of ME2. Take a better look at Cole from Gears, Rico from Killzone, Barret from FF7, and then look at Jacob and you'll see he's an outstanding improvement compared to the rest.

Except she is not perfect. And she was not genetically engineered to be white she was basically a bizarre female clone of her father who I guess was a white guy.
But hey sure get upset one person attacks Jacob for being black and then turn around and attack my favorite character just because she is white.
Exactly! Every single time there is a conversation that says someone or something is racist against a "coloured" person, they switch the topic around and start racist comments against whites. WTF is with this societal attitude that says to prevent racism against colours then you have to be racist against whites.
Agreed!
Something is very wrong when it seems only white people can be a accused of racism.
In fact many black people hate latino's, asians and of course white's.
Same goes for the asians that hate black people, so on it goes in ALL races.
I hate it when I see in movies like for example "Rising sun" where the Sean Connery character says to Wesley Snipes character "soon the Japanese will accuse YOU for being racist", meaning how silly , a black man can't be racist, cause 150 years ago his ancestors were slaves.
At times it has gone so far that a "white" person can't say anything about any other PERSON that is acting like an idiot, cause well he happens to be black or asian or latino.
This automatically mean that the white guy is a **** and hate every other color, let's forget that he was just pissed of with the HUMAN being.
A lot of what is percieved as racism is probably mostly predjudice thinking and ignorance.
Personally I think Jacob was done pretty well.
The one line about "spelling drinks" and the "Man hug" felt a little stereotypical.
He isn't bland, it is just that he is among several extreme personalities like Jack and Mordin etc etc.
Also, another reason is that his "powers" aren't really useful so people simply forget about him.
Had he had powers like Miranda, 75% would sing a different tune and say Jacob is best cause he can do most things and has squad damage and so on.
Jacob is actually among the few level headed and NORMAL characters in ME2.

Oh and you're an idiot. Look at when Captain America was released. African-Americans were second class citizens.
I could be wrong but wasn't captain america created during WW1 or WW2? I mean, wouldn't it make sense for him to be white in an almost all white military? So the chances of him being anything else would be very very slim... I mean if there was a super soldier in the Chinese military who so happened to be a Navajo I would be confused and frustrated and all kinds of head spinning would be going on.
Well, I did say ALMOST all white military. I mean... I think I saw a program once that was trying to bring shame down on the military for sometimes not allowing some of the ethnic divisions to join key battles. And using the phrase "forced into the military" isn't accurate at all. It's called the draft and i know there are many proud Japanese Americans, African Americans and Native Americans who served in WWII. Here in the United States of America we will NEVER force someone to fight for us. Also as a Tongan American I know that Tongan's are still proud today to have loaned their islands to the U.S. troops during WWII even though the military used some of the islands to test nukes.

It's called "draft" and still happens in some countries, even today. Germany, for example, still has it.
The only ones who really forced people in was the Royal Navy. It was done with press gangs.
Blacks weren't combat forces in WW2. Asians were and they kicked major ass. A US unit comprised mainly of soldiers with Asian heritage (primarily Japanese, but also Korean and Chinese) once Banzai charged a German position in France. And totally steamrolled it. The Krauts pissed their pants that day.
And I think this whole talk about "Afro American" and "Whatever-else American" is a load of crap. You're all Americans. Period.

Yes, It called a "draft" and it means you are legally forced to serve in the military. This is why American men (18-25) stll have to register with the Selective Service. In a time of crisis Americans can still be forced into military service, and yes, many other countries do this too.

well, you are using the word in a much more passive manner than I would or at least i hope you are. If you live here in the states you should know that legally forced is not very scary. I mean, we've had at least one president who has dodged the draft... Also, the draft is gone by the way. They can bring it back if the need is dire and fighters are greatly needed... And in my opinion, if you can fight during a time when the draft is needed, you should fight but thats from the rantings of a man who comes from warrior roots. Plus that could also mean that you are in trouble if you fight or not.

Miranda was only her father's definition of perfect, so it's not a huge deal. No reason why she couldn't have been another ethnicity, of course, but it's not like the game ever said she was literally the perfect woman.Tyfreaky wrote...
And I will never, EVER, ever, be able to figure out why all the 'perfect' people in every game or TV show has to Caucasian. So you can't make a perfect African, Hispanic, Asian, or Arab? Only white people can be bred to be perfect...sheesh.
The ONLY good part of the show Andromeda was the fact that there were Black. Asian, and Hispanic Nietzscheans. Yes Tyr was a bad ass.

I wouldn't say the draft is gone, merely inactive. The Selective Service remains in operation and we could begin consription in a matter of weeks. I'm not sure if this would require congressional action or simply the President issuing an executive order.
My main problem is with people claiming America would never force people to serve. There are ways for individuals (Bill Clinton, Dick Cheney) to legally avoid service, but those who are drafted and refuse without a waiver can be jailed. That constitutes force to me.
