Barrier is a biotic power, and is affected by getting Biotic power upgrades like duration increase and cooldown reduction.
Geth Shield is a tech power and is affected by getting Tech power upgrades like duration increase and cooldown reduction.
Fortification is just a combat power, and is not effected by Tech/Biotic upgrades, so its not nearly as useful.

Why would the devs etc put them in as bonus powers etc if they are all the same.
It just doesn't make sense, even aside the upgrade boosts etc.
Could it have something to do with the "tutorial" level? Maybe this doesn't work outside of the first area...
I hope not, that little mech is where I do most of my testing! it's a perfect area!

I reallocated his Extra-Power and tried the Forti as lvl.3, lvl. 4 >75% and lvl.4 100% against Vorcha Mercs.
Standard Shields: 362
Shields+lvl.3 Forti: 550
Shields+lvl.4 75%: 550
Shields+lvl.4 100%: 612
For every Version i confirm (from my PC-Version), that they always recharged the Shields to the new Maximum.
But after new Damage came in the Bonus disappeared.

It just doesn't make sense.
Even the fortification bonus says "Armor +25% max shields"
I realize it says shields, but says it boosts armor by that amount, not shields. If you look at Grunt, he definitely has armor, not shields, like adept has barriers, not shields. My soldier, has shields.
I wonder if it affects the damage protection upgrades? the hardened VI albative platings?
It just doesn't make sense if they are all the same. It would be a waste of time for the player and the devs to make as bonus skills etc.

Also, GSB and Barrier are affected by the relevant upgrades, so they're not exactly the same.

The only one that is truly gimped is fortification. Which seems to be glitched in the tutorial level.
Not just Fort', it happens with GSB too, haven't tried Barrier.

GSB is glitched on the tutorial level as well?
Yup, I still have the raised max shields (257->320) and graphics after losing my shield.

It's the only logical answer I can think of.
One gives shields, one gives armor, one gives barrier.
This may make each stronger/weaker to different enemy types, attacks, etc.
It's the only logical thing I can fathom at this point.
Like why do the classes have different names for their shields? i.e. Grunt has 'armor' adept has 'barrier' soldier has 'shields' etc.
There has to be something. I highly doubt they would make three bonus skills identical to give to the player, regardless of the passive biotic/tech boosts from upgrades etc. and have different namings for the protections as well.
Does any class actually get 'armor' as it's listing for shields? I would have thought it soldier, but perhaps vanguard or something?
It just doesn't make sense.

However, no matter which of the three abilities you choose, you still only gain points in your natural defense (Shields for a Soldier/Barrier for an Adept), so it's not as if Fort' actually gives armour. If I have 320 Shields and use Heavy Fort', I'm listed as having 640 Shields, not 320 of each.

Every other class gets Shields. (Blue Bar)
But it sounds to me like the tutorial level is just glitched, or every other mission is.

Have you tested it anywhere outside of the tutorial? If not, perhaps you should. The devs may have done that on purpose. Jacob has no cooldown penalty when you first meet him on the tutorial level.

I dont have enough time to test but someone should definitely look into it.

For example:
you have unlimited hacking attempts.
reloading a save gives you full ammo.
tech armor doesn't shut off, looks like it's the same with fortification et. all.
Conclusions drawn from testing in the tutorial are therefore invalid until verified in the game proper.
edit: the hacking and ammo things make sense for a tutorial level, but I wonder if the change in functionality of the shield skills is intended as the change doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Only Grunt has armor as his defense. Perhaps that's why he gets Fortification... That we are allowed to use it as a bonus power is just that, a bonus. It's also looks cool (at least for the few seconds it lasts before you get shot to crap anyway). That's enough for me.
Not every power makes sense from a min/max standpoint anyway. Not sure why we are arguing over this one.
And like others mentioned, Vanguards and Adepts have a barrier as their default shield and everyone else has kinetic shields. Does it mean anything? I imagine it's just for flavor. That upgrades change the balance of this flavor (for bonus powers anyway) means that min/maxers will ignore flavor and go for the best ability.

Well for once here on the forum, I don't think we are arguing in this thread.
I think it's more everyone is just wondering what the hell's the point of three identical bonus skills?
Hopefully BioWare will provide at least a hint, or something. Fortification just looks way to cool to have it another duplicate.
