I dis some part time work as a telemarketer a while back, so I treat them how they would want to be treated. I get a word in before they go into the speil to tell them that I'm not interested, then wish them a pleasant day and hang up. No time wasted, no anger, no hassle.

There's another way to avoid telemarketers too: make sure your phone number is not in the phone book. A lot of telemarketing companies (at least in the UK) pull numbers directly from the phone book, so having an unlisted number helps considerably.

I ask them for their home number so I can call them when they are relaxing/movie/reading/cooking/dinner/gaming/etc at home

Caller ID. If I don't recognize a number, then I don't answer. Also, if I recognize a number and don't want to talk to them, then I don't answer either. Especially helpful for irritating family members.

You can also tell them you´re very busy fighting evil. It works pretty well for Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormons and similars...

I usually don't answer. Sometimes I dick around answer and then hit a few buttons to make the dial tones screech in their ear.

I politely tell them I'm not interested and hang up. If I recognize them as telemarketers on my caller ID, I don't pick up the phone. I can't really be rude to them. They're regular people just doing their job. A very crappy job I'm sure they rather not do if anything better came along. Worse, those jobs tend to pay in part, if not entirely by commission. I see no reason to make them feel worse.

Perfect.  I agree that there's no sense in wasting your time or theirs, or upsetting you or them.  Thank God for caller ID and the 'do not call' list.

When I was in college, hubby and I had this phone with a couple buttons that would make a cheesy 'falling and then exploding bomb' sound and totally fake machine gun fire noise.  When we got the marketing calls where a computer talked to you and not real people, we'd hit the bomb or machine gun fire buttons.  For some reason, the computer usually hung up on us.

Telemarketers are smart. I've seen them collect old phone numbers, and call from those. I once got a call from a number I recognized as a friends old cell number. I was interested in knowing who it was...and *bam* telemarketer. They are most tricksy...

I've only been called up by Gallup for a survey twice.

On top of that, my landline handset doesn't work anymore, so I've got no problem with telemarketers.

Like the Guy from Britain said: Cold-Calling isnt allowed without Rules (at least in Europe)

, so you only need some basic Knowledge as a rehtoric Bastion.

Much easier: Say, that "you were already called by them..."

One Time i was really called twice on a Day and when i said this -truthfully- they apologized and said Goodbye ^^

Unlisted, CallerID & I won't give my number to any organisation that has sold/given away my previous numbers!

In the UK, you have the option to opt out of cold-calling!

I'd heard that before, but I laughed so hard just the same.  I played it for hubby, who'd never heard it before--he was just rolling laughing by the end of it.

"Excuse me, sir but-"
"Do you know what the 'Do Not Call List' is?"
"Er, yessir."
"Put me on it."
"Sir, I'm trying to-"
'Put me on it. Now."
"SHUT UP, SIR, SHUT UP!"
(Most of my next sentence would be censored here. Suffice it to say that I hung up on the guy.)

By the way, this actually happened. I was ticked off, but also reasonably amused...Telemarketers usually don't start screaming at their prey.

always the same:

Caller: "Could I introduce you ..."

Me: "Wait a sec. Do you know the trick with the click?"

Caller: "No."

Me hangs up.

Try asking really personal questions....like did you experiment with your sexuality? And if so did it involve hamsters.

That shuts them up.

I wouldn't dare. It's annoying enough to be called frequently by some call-center dude or dudette trying to make a living. I certainly don't need them to tell me of their sick fantasies, I can figure that much myself.
