So I am just heading into the Suicide mission on insanity with my Engineer. The overall experience was highly rewarding once I adjusted to the difficulty and the need to analyze the battlefield. I am interested in playing another class on Insanity, yet I am having trouble deciding between the Vanguard and Adept. Both classes are equally appealing to me and both rely on strategies I am comfortable with; Adept and manipulating the battlefield and Vanguard and its aggressive style of play.

What do you guys think would be a better choice for my next class? Knowing my interest in the game, I would more than likely play both of them anyway. But which one should I pick first.

Please vote here and also provide feedback on the thread.

Lol, I made a similar thread (Adept vs. Vanguard for 2nd Insanity run) and after reading the feedback I got convinced to try Engineer.

I think between the two classes Vanguard sounds like more fun, so long as you can accept that there will be times when using Charge = suicide and you have to use other tools/tactics.

Haha I remember your thread. I was one of the people convincing you to be an Engineer. :P

Oh I've been following Gatsby's Adept guide quite regularly actually. I just came across thisisme8's Vanguard guide and watched a couple of his vids and I thought that the class itself looks fun as hell. Prior to seeing those videos, I was convinced that I was going to play an Adept next game, now I'm torn between the two.

My personal vote is go Vanguard... but I say that because my original Insanity play through was Sentinel, and the sent/adept play very similar.  Although I'm working very hard on an Assault Sentinel that plays like a Vanguard.  Difficult without using bonus power, but I will Persevere!

I'm playing on insanity using the adept and it's a blast so far... literally. With the right squadmates using debuffs, you can shred through an entire room in seconds (until another wave comes in anyway). The adept is such a power house.

The first and last part of suicide mission vanguard felt like the strongest class in the game. The layout of that level is just perfect for the vanguard. The middle part (the bubble) they weren't so hot though.

I'd say go with Vanguard first. Adept play style is a lot like an Engineer, CC and strip down defence then nuke. Vanguard would be a totally different ball game.

I think I agree with this. Engineer and Adept are theoretically similar strategies in how they approach and attempt to control a fight, whereas Vanguard requires a different approach from any other class, really.

It takes a lot of adjusting at first when you play Vanguard, but once you get over the learning curve it's one of the funnest classes in the game. Just be prepared to die a lot as you figure out who and where to charge.

Excluding my vote, both classes are tied on the poll, haha.

Vanguard hands down! Its the class with the most unique paly style. Adept on insanity is just boring as hell IMHO.

Love it.  Drone spam is so situationally amazing.  I've survived situations that would wreck most other classes (flanked by a Krogan/YMIR/Geth Hunter/Scion etc.).  I survived a few stretches on Horizon with both squad members down that I'd never have managed normally thanks to drone spam.

I only have 1 pt in drone though atm....1 is all you really need for drone spam to be effective on big nasties so it seems like it's an "all or nothing" skill.....either take 1 and just bust it out when really needed or take Exploding Drone and use it often.  I might respec to Exploding Drone late game, stealing some points from Overload (which is useless vs. Collectors anyways).

I'm currently on Tali's recruitment mission....team is Garrus with max Overload, Sheppard with 3 pt Overload, Zhaed with Squad Disrupter Ammo.  Stuff is just falling over, it's awesome. Image IPB  Most other missions I've ran with Miranda and Jacob (Squad Incind Ammo).  My bonus power is Reave, which sounds weird considering that Incinerate is almost as good as Reave anyways.....but I really like what Reave does to unshielded organics and I like that it takes down Barriers.  Might switch to AP ammo later, but doubt it.

But yeah, Image IPB the class.

I strongly suggest picking up Explosive Drone. The reason for this is that the strategy based aaround spamming the drone on powerful targets and distracting enemies. Adding the explosive trait to it deals damage everytime it is destroyed, thus making it easier to pick away at their shields / armor. This is the build I found to be most beneficial for my playstyle

+4 Overload - Heavy
+4 Incinerate - Heavy
+ 4 Combat Drone - Heavy
+ 2 AI Hacking
+ 3 Cryo Blast
+4 Engineer - Demolisher
+1 (Or 2.. can't remember) Armor Piercing / Warp Ammo.

Incinerate increases your damage by a ton vs organics and it is one way to wear down the Collectors. Overload is extremely beneficial vs synthetics and is also great against mercs. We both know the Drone's benefits. I rarely AI Hacking, only using it one or two times on Legion's Loyalty. Cryo blast is situational, but I found myself using it more later on in the game. I found that armor piercing / warp ammo was incredibly beneficial, mainly because it didn't require a cooldown. When I fought on the collector ship, I respecced so I could get squad warp ammo and then just brought Miranda and Thane with me. I picked off the collectors quite fast doing that.

Playing as Adept, Warp explosions and launching mobs into orbit using Throw can be fun, but it loses its appeal after a while.

As a Vanguard, I don't think you can get tired of chain-charging everything on the map and shotgunning them at point blank.

I haven't watched all Gatsby's videos but he doesn't show that at the beginning of the game is hell for the Adept. Powers aren't strong enough to pierce through barriers/armor/shields in hit so you have to wait for cooldown. Squadmates cooldowns are also longer than yours so if you're relying on Miranda for Overload, it's gonna be a while. Combos are hard to time and execute because durations are still short. Coupled with the Adept's softness, I died quite a few times. More than Vanguard, probably. I've finished Vanguard and Sentinel on Insanity but I've just started Adept. It most probably gets stronger as you progress but, as stated, the beginning is annoying.

I think it has to do with how you spec your team. On Insanity, low level skills aren't enough to one hit defenses, so you have to concentrate points into one skill and distribute skill allocation across characters. So for the beginning of the game, Miranda ONLY has Overload - because nearly all her points are going into it. Likewise, you will likely focus points on Warp, then Pull and Throw to setup, letting Jacob setup with Pull until you have a spare point for it.

Uhm. Yes. That's exactly what I'm saying. Until the powers reach that level it is difficult.

I'm having the same problem. But based on this, I'm going to second playthrough with a Vanguard and third with an assault Sentential.

EDIT: Special power: Reave or slam?
