This. If Tali had been available from the start, I'd have never gone with Liara in the first place. Liara's nice and all, but Tali is nicer.

Kind of a hamfisted way to encourage you to cheat. As for the terrible consequences, I imagine it will be some big blowup or other much ado about something affair when they confront your new romance. Imagine Liara/Ashley walking into your room when they first step on the SR2 only to find....Miranda/Tali/Jack in your room. Then Joker pings your comm to let you know you might want to get back up to your quarters...its about to pop off...
Honestly at this point, why should Shepard even want to get them back on the team? Just judging off what we have to work with in game, there is no good reason come ME3 that Shepard should even care about or go looking for these people.

What about Liara's scene gives any indication that there is an ongoing romance to even be able to cheat on her?

HAHA that is pretty much right on the mark with how my Shepard felt and how he moved on to Tali, someone who NEVER forgot Shepard. Are there any more like that?

Well... Liara was compleatly obessed with finding the Shadow Broaker... it was she who was not interested in rejoining so I have no guilt in leaving her for another character (especialy when I really liked that character even in the first game). While I can understand that Ashley/Kaidan feel abandoned and betrayed because Shepard works for Cerberus now, Liara's actions actualy were enough for me to leave.
Ask her why she is so obessed and once you find out why you might just change your tune about her. Of the 3 I thought Lira had the best reason for not joining your team.

Exactly!
Worst, she shows no indication in her dialogue she has feelings or even if she had feelings (Ash and Kai do). She even calls you friend. What ever bit of devotion she does show is the same if you had her as a friend.
Worst yet, the kiss was awkward at best. When you watch it carefully, Shepard tries to be more intimate but she ends it short and then pulls back and shakes her head. That is never a good sign. To me this is more like you kiss your ex, and she lets it slide for old times sake but stops it before it goes too far. Or you're kissing your SO who has already decided to dump you and the speech is coming up.

Uh, I'm not sure how you can blame the character of Liara for a fundamental screw-up by the writers and anyone else involved who thought that whole interaction was good enough to ship out the door.
You aren't given the option to bring up the relationship at all. It isn't mentioned by anyone in the game. Those are failures by the developers, not the character. Liara only says what she's allowed to say, you can only ask about what you're allowed to ask about. What she says and what you're permitted to ask about constitutes a total failure on the part of Bioware.
You can stay with her despite the developer screwup on every level with her interaction, or you can chose to experience content they actually got around to putting in the game and didn't screw up so badly. But in any case, busting out your tiniest violin and "justifying" pursuing content by how cold she was to is just pretty absurd. The screwed up way that whole scene is now she says the same things to everyone and they can say the same things back to her regardless of whether you had her as a LI, a friend, or didn't even import from ME 1.
Keep in mind, "the busting out of the tiniest violin" is not as absurd when you read transcripts of the writers mentioning "cheating" and "haunt" repeatedly. Also stating any such concern as such is actually offensive. A well dressed insult is still and insult. Our response to the game is just as valid as yours, no matter how much you disagree with it.
To use your terminology, Liara's failing is screw up on the designers side, so there is nothing wrong with us in persueing of ME2 content. But what is there stopping them from continuing the tradition and pulling something on us in ME3 involving Liara.
I do agree, Liara was poorly handled. No break up option, no dialogue changes, no Kelly/Joker asking you about it (not even an email). Doesn't change the fact of what writers say during interviews or what may happen in ME3. So please refrain from accusing us with the violin arguement. Our gripes are just as valid as yours, in the context it was given to us.
I didn't intend to be insulting and I can certainly see how it could come across that way. I apologize for that, I don't have any interest in dictating the right way to play or anything like that at all.
I suppose a better way to say it would be that all of the imported relationships are handled so poorly and so shallowly with no chance for interaction and dialog that any perceptions of "cheating" and "fidelity" are left ENTIRELY to the imagination of the player. Really, I feel that you have to put more effort into delusional self-denial to maintain the relationships based on the current content. And I'm certainly guilty of that so I'm not trying to throw stones at anyone.
So I feel that the way they were handled with no chance at interaction, that penalizing people for playing the game they COULD play is just absurd. On the other hand, I can't help but be a bit selfish and feel that in ME 3 players who were stubborn enough to hang in there should get something back, something that they most certainly did not get at all in ME 2.

Ash/Kaidan won't join because they are butthurt, agreed that is a terrible excuse.
Lira won't join because getting vengenance for Feron is more important to her than Shepard is.
Neither of those exactly screams "this is a continuing but troubled romance" to me. Both are pretty clearly an ending to the relationship.

You deserve your cookie too! You have my full support. My Shep should have too. They remained loyal to him. I just want that those of us who took the path of "cheat" did not do so lightly or because our Shepard's were weak willed. Okay mine was a little, Verner's foot did not derserve a bullet.

You all getting excited about Tali in ME 3 are going to be sad. You see, she has you now as your space girlfriend. Before she was cute and nice, but soon...
She'll want to know where you are all the time. Why aren't you responding to her omni-texts on missions? When are you coming home? Why are you talking to that Asari? SHe wants a new suit...but only Gucci ordered from Earth...
Before you know it she has you wrapped around her finger and takes you for everything you are worth. Those Quarians are all the same...

She does that even if you reject her outright for Ashley. She is a great friend, but the spark of love has long since gone out...

That said, I'm on my first play-through, and when Kaidan dumped my PC in front of Jack and Garrus (the two people I totally wouldn't pick to see me publically dumped) she moved on.

Liara has simply lost it. She places her petty personal vendetta for some random drell over the Reaper threat, snubbing Shepard's requests for her aid. Why is her involvement in some underworld pissing match more important than the imminent destruction of all intelligent life in the galaxy?
Perhaps Shepard should have offered to pay her?
Consider, if you will, that you can get Zaeed Massani, Zaeed frigging Massani, the consummate mercenary hired gun, to put aside his own private vendetta, for the moment at least, provided you are persuasive enough. Liara, OTOH, has her head firmly stuck up inside her own ass... that drell must have been some "friend"...

Well it's over if you want it to be over certainly. If you don't then you have to cultivate a certain attitude and perspective in order to maintain a sense of optimism. And Bioware makes that hard to do, not through great writing and conflict, but by aggravating omission.

You have no expectation of ever seeing them again. They can go vent out an airlock as far as my femShepard is concerned.
I do want them in ME3, but mostly so I can see how it all plays out. Morbid curiosity.
