My current adept playthrough romanced Kaidan in ME1 and as far as I'm concered, he'd obviously moved on with his life in the past two years. His actions on Horizon didn't make me mad so much as they finally opened my eyes that yes, things had most definitely changed in the past two years, just as everyone had been telling me since the beginning. As far as I'm concerned, he can freely move on with his life and my Shep will move on with hers (with Thane at her side).

It's cheating if you didn't break up with the original LI. From what I can tell, you can't break up with them in their dialogue when you see them again, so you're stuck cheating!
The only reason I see that there isn't a "break it off" option is because there isn't one needed. The LI's themselves are the ones that broke it off. If there is no relationship there is no cheating.

I really don't see how it can even be called cheating. A picture on Shep's desk does not a relationship make. Liara's romance is the only one I can say might be construed as cheating, but I haven't been through hers and I don't know how she reacts to a Shep who romanced her. I did go through the dialogue where she tells you that she gave you to Cerberus, which was interesting.
It's exactly the same. There are zero differences in Liara's dialogue between a romance Shep and a non romance Shep.

I think that is the crux of the problem. Made twice as ironic by the fact you can break up with your ME2 romances. But not your ME1 romances. But to many people, the presentation of their ME1 LI made them feel their Shepard was jilted. Yet s/he is not given the choice to honourably break it off and move on. So if s/he wants to move on, s/he has to do it like this.
Because that choice is not here now, and we are relegated to a simple yes or no scenario (stay loyal or not, with no choice as to why) means that the ME3's resolution should take that into account and offer us the room then to shape the story of our Shepard. Alas, this is not a simple yes or no scenario, it never is when it comes to love. It doesn't have to be a hyper complicated outcome, just not a binary one. The use of terms like cheating, makes people worried it will be one though. Hence why I think saying 'remaining loyal to' is a better way to say it.
I mean DA:O had variation on how/why you dump someone. Heck! Even Tali seems to have two separate ways, each causing a seperate reaction and post base dialogue (even Jack has some of that variation, hers is a little more difficult to navigate, well it is Jack...). So a binary result for your faded ME1 LI will be a disappointment.
Edit - Not to forget, many people actually see the break up dialogue is not needed because it seems to be defaulted like that as is. As in the romance has faded and died. Now there might still be hope, and Shepard might still win them back (re-romance them?) in ME3. But as things stand, it mostly feels like it is over and that picture is Shepard being nostalgic or hopeful (depending how you play him or her).

Ash/Kaidan won't join because they are butthurt, agreed that is a terrible excuse.
Lira won't join because getting vengenance for Feron is more important to her than Shepard is.
Neither of those exactly screams "this is a continuing but troubled romance" to me. Both are pretty clearly an ending to the relationship.
True but she is also getting revenge because of you. She saved your body from ending up with the Collectors by stealing it from the SB which got her friend killed. She even tells you that she wants to talk about it more and show more feeling but by doing so would put her and most likely others in danger. So in fact she is still protecting you.
As for Ash and kaidan they can rot for all I care. They were far too focused on who Shep is working for rather than being happy Shep is alive. I totally agree that with that kind of greeting they instantly become last years model.

Well I did just that, blew up Ashley to boot! Then when I started up 2, Kaiden was there being all gay with me open scene, I bout lost it in laughter
But when I went to cabin, I had no picture there at all, so I was clean slate for Tali.

I'm considering doing the same thing. But I just did a "perfect" ME1 playthrough a few weeks ago, don't want to do it all over again!
Either way, even if Liara had been all "Oh, you're alive and well, I love you so much!", there's just no way I could ever NOT pick Tali.

Does romancing Kelly Chambers count as cheating on your ME1 love intrest?
Well having her up in your room for dinner (which is followed by the "Want me to feed your fish?") will not trigger the picture facing down change. Not sure if she does afterwards.

They said that while it doesn't award the paramour achievement nor turn down the photo, it IS NOTED in your savefile that you had Kelly in your quarters.

Oh great, I can see it now. Liara walks into the quarters to find Kelly feeding the fish, thinking I left her for Kelly. The whole time Tali is like in the Engine Room free of blame. While Jacob, Thane, Garrus, and Miranda are in her office watching all of this on the spy cam, munching on popcorn... Garrus has to eat the nuts from the red bowl though (he stole the bowl last time they were at Eternity).

But I just want to see what others think on the whole Ashley / Jack thing. Ashley clearly states that she can't trust you because your with cerberus. And then Jack on the otherhand knows without a doubt your working for cerberus (But with details like saving the galaxy and what have you) yet she still trusts you if you talk with her. She was raised in a Cerberus hell hole on pragia that scared her for life! Yet she doesn't let the fact that Shepard is with Cerberus stop her from truly seeing who Shepard is and eventually shows a side of herself to Shepard that no one else has seen. It for sure is emotional, probably my favorite scene in the game, and really reflects the kind of person both Jack and Ash are.
I really can't wait to confront Ash in ME3 and say "We had good times stopping Saren and getting to know eachother, but obviously you've moved on, and so have I." And walk away to Jack.

I find it actually a little tragic, the one person that has showed an interest and kindness to her, is not actually romantically interested in her.

I was very pleased with Jack's character evolution, even if my Shep did not romance her, I still made sure I did not ****** her off, or hurt her too much at the end. I still think if you take the best "shoot down" option, she still sounds a little hurt (and in the loop dialogue asks you (in what I think is a polite tone for her) to stop pissing around and keep it professional). Really felt like I won her "loyalty" for the mission. I think in every speech dialogue I do she is there agreeing.

I guess thats what always hooks me with Jack in like every playthrough. I always talk with her, as I do with my entire squad. But I can always see she changes after each talk. She seems more willing to talk with you. All the other romances seem to one sided to me honestly. I know it's not too hard to romance Jack, ecspecially if you choose the early option where she tries to figure you out. But I just love keeping her on her toes, saying "I wanna know what make you tick first." It just makes it more exciting to see her open up.

My single Shepard fell for Jack, great romance and character growth.
Femshep went for Thane, poor Kaidan died on Vermire.

I stayed loyal to Liara, why wouldn't I? She saved my life at what appears to be a great personal cost to herself. She thought I would hate her for giving me to Cerberus so that explains (in my mind at least) why she was so awkward. Seeing as the Shadow Broker was going to sell me to the Collectors I owe her, for all I know the Shadow Broker is still trying to get me and she is trying to stop him/her. Whatever the case I trust her and will wait.
This is my take on it too. Though it's kind of "meta-gaming" with the comics, Shepard owes Liara big-time. Keeping my hands off the ME2 mates is the least I can do until Liara can rejoin the Normandy crew.

Who was it that used the word 'cheating?' Did that originate with Bioware or with fans? The reason why is ask is because in game I don't think Shepard cheats on his LI at all. Ashley blows you off because she thinks your loyalty now lies with Cerberus. If you romanced Liara in ME1 she isn't much different. At first she moves in for a kiss, but afterwards seems to regret it, and acts rather cold and distant.
So if Shepard moves on and romances someone else in ME2, how is that cheating? If he romanced Ashley she's offended by his working with Cerberus and has rejected him. If he (or she) romanced Liara, Liara seems too hurt by the two years that Shepard was dead, and is keeping things 'professional.' It seems to me that the ME1 romances end their relationship with Shepard. You can't cheat if you are single.

Casey Hudson, the Project Lead for Mass Effect. If memory serves correctly.

I doubt anything will crop up at all. BioWare handled the LI carry-over very, very poorly.
There's absolutely no room for BioWare to turn around and accuse people "cheating" when
1) players aren't given a choice to break up with them
2) the romance isn't even brought up at all (with Liara, who doesn't even send an email...)
3) they all talk about the relationship in the past tense (except Liara, who doesn't talk about it at all)
So, to summarize, don't worry. BioWare has no room to create "cheating" drama in ME3. It wouldn't make any sense.

I stayed faithful but I have a strong urge to kick some BW people in the quad's.

Liara does this whether she was Sheps romance in ME1 or not. Her telling you all this has absolutely nothing to do with a romance.
Out of the three Liara is the one that I feel it would be the least likely to be considered cheating. With Ash/Kaidan you at least get to express, however slightly, how you still feel. So do they, they also send you an email regretting their actions, Joker and Kelly both make mention of the reunion and ask Shepard how he still feels about. It doesn't exactly constitute an ongoing romance, but it is at least something.
None of this happens with Liara. There is absolutely no mention of the Liara romance in the game.
