I don't see why everyone is having trouble getting money, just do quests, sell all the crap you loot, and be sure to bring Leliana along to unlock chests, while the actual loot from the chests aren't usually useful for you or your partymembers, they can still be worth some coin, especially if you loot heavy armor for 1-2 gold each. You can make tons of money from looting loads of crap on each mission.

*Minor spoiler*

Be sure to get one point in stealing aswell, just so you can do Slim Couldry's quests in Denerim, you get quite a bit of gold from those.

Sidequests are the best source of income in the game. Don't underestimate them; the majority of the time, they are on the same path you're following anyways, and the reward is typically a few gold.

Try running the chantry, mage, and mercenary side quests (via the various "job boards"). The rewards are usually a few gold for each quest completion.

Oh yeah. On my first playthrough I did a quest and when I got paid I was like "What? One gold piece? One?" and I never did another one. Silly me. That gold piece is worth 10,000 coppers, which is a good deal of healing supplies (flasks & elfroot) for example.

On a related note: never buy potions. Buy flasks of course, and buy ingredients if you must, but the premade potions are way too expensive. Having the skill to make your own is always worthwhile.

I honestly never bought a single major item from a vendor, the reay aren't better than what you can find questing. Also, there will be certain side quests and other activities such as stealing that you won't do depending on the "alignment" of your char and how much a theme means to you. As far as I am aware there is no skill that raises selling prices or lowers buying prices at shops.

Also when you do Redcliff, get the bartender to fight. The bar maid will let you go through part of his stock for free. Free stuff that are handy. I was struggleing the first time I went through. When I did my Rogue my secound time I ended the game with over 300 g and all my equipment was gotten through quest...I didn't buy a thing from merchants other than flask, runes and backpacks realy.

Each merchant seems to have one item that is very pricey and very valuable. But not all of those items make sense for all classes, so you really only need 2 or maybe 3 of them. I bought the staff and a belt for my mage. That ring sure was tempting.

Side quests. Some pay nicely. Don't leave areas of the map unexplored. If you don't have someone to unlock things, go back and do it. (There are a couple of areas you cannot return to...beware). I like the whole stealing thing. I didn't do much of it, but I did a little.

If you are going to buy things, find out who has the best prices; they're not all the same. You can pay 1 silver or 1.5 silvers for a flask. Your choice. You can pay next to nothing for some items from some vendors and a lot more from others. I've been making some mental notes about who has the cheapest lyrium and who has the cheapest flasks and who has the cheapest....yadda yadda. I haven't looked so much at how much they pay for things yet. Maybe I'll making a shopping chart. It pays to shop around, they say.

On my second play through I stumbled onto a couple of things in the Arl of Denerim estate:

1. There is a small treasure room just before you head down to the dungeons. I didn't keep track, but it seems like there was 10 or 15 gold pieces there.

2. One of the prisoners in the dungeons is some elf, it sounds like he was the groom from the city elf origin (which I haven't played, yet). If you talk to him first, you get some different dialog options with the previous Arl's son whom you also find in the dungeons. One option is to get a key to his strongbox which contains 40 gold! You can also kill the SOB after taking his key. Death to the aristocrats! Power to the People!

I wish the UI would say what you robbed so I don't have to keep checking my inventory to see if I got something notable or not...

they made a mod for that :)

Err ?!?

The version with binary makes sense:

There are 10 types of people in the world, those who understand binary and those who dont.

Because 10bin = 2dec.

BUT: 16hex = 24dec. You still only mention 2 cases, not 16 and even less 24.

Your statement therefore makes no sense whatsoever.

in one complete playthrough u spent about 850g in total, can vary abit depending on luck with the random loot(pc version).

in other words u can already pre-plan on what items u gonna buy without using any exploits based on the total gold u will gain.

For the rest it is just to never buy comsumables from vendor, too expensive for its own good.

I'll be honest, you can cheat and give yourself about one thousand gold, buy a few good items for a couple characters and just watch that money go down the toilet so fast, you'll hope you didn't drop your cellphone.

I mean, when people are saying they're using that cheesy 2 warrior 2 mage party, that's pretty much giving the middle finger to every non-boss fight's balance already. Oh, no real need to buy potions either with 1.02, or injury kits either. Man, those things drop like candy now, and you're less likely to get clutter drops.

You havent played many games, did you ?

One game bathes you in platinum coins.

In the other you can be halfway through and your total wealth has still to hit 1 gold.

Therefore, your logic is hard to follow. One gold is quite a lot of money in this game, I wouldnt want to skip over that much.

As most have said loot and sell, it don't matter if the loot is bad or not, look after the coppers and the sovereigns will look after themselves ie. more copper = more silver = more sovereigns.

Solo the game as a Arcane Warrior/Blood Mage. Sell your companions' stuff. Buy only backpacks and Potent/Greater Health Formulas. Sell everything except potions and ingredients you need to make potions.

Be evil. Really evil. And have Leliana (naked cuz you sold her stuff) steal from people.

Make and sell potent lyrium potions. 22s (approx) profit per potion. You will need about 11g for the recipe (from Wonders of Thedas, Denerim), then buy the ingredients from Gnawed Noble, except the lyrium dust which you get from Quartermaster in mage tower. It's up to you how much you use/abuse this method of making cash. There's no limit apart from how much time you want to spend on it. This isn't my original idea, there's a thread about it elsewhere in the spoilers forum. I'm just passing on the information.

The main points to keep in mind about money in this game is that you don't get a blurb in the epilogue that says you died the richest Gray Warden in history. It's a tool for your goal, nothing more.

As has been mentioned, you can save quite a lot of cash by specializing your companions. I usually use Lelianna for poisons and stealing and Morrigan and Wynne for Herbalism. Having Lelianna or Zevran around to open chests can net you some coin, Pickpocketing can as well, as well as a funny remark from Irving if he catches you. Herbalism saves you lots of coin by making kits and potions yourself.

I generally do not buy any items from merchants other than needed recipes or trade goods such as elfroot or deathroot. That oh so tempting tier 5 armour will be vendor trash by the end of the game. You don't need it to win (even on nightmare), so why buy it? Just level past it and save some coin. The only exception for me at least is if the item looks pretty. Then I buy it and use it to dress the dolls.

I finished my last game having spent over 1000 sovereigns. Steps used:

1) Start with a rogue, go straight for level 4 pickpocket

2) Set this tactic: Enemy: At short range -> Use Ability: Steal

3) Finish Lothering sidequests and the Dalish quest first; side with the elves

4) Sell everything, spend all cash on Elfroot

5) Turn in all Elfroot for XP. Jump from level 9 to level 22.

6) Find Dragonbone and Silverite loot in every random chest from then on.

7) Enjoy your 3 cubic acres of cash.

By being shady.

Every quest, in which you get lots of money, is morally questionable. Only in Precious Metals, and only if you don't ask unnecessary questions, can you walk away with the impression that you have done a simple and profitable FedEx quest to help the Circle without drawing attention from the templars. If you're a little more curious you'll find out that this is basically drug trafficking. In Asunder, you're letting a very dangerous beast go for 25 sovereigns. In Denerin, you can demand 50 gold for rescuing a man from Howe's dungeon, which isn't morally sound either.

There is a very easy way to receive endless money, but you need more than 11.5 sovereigns and Master Herbalism skill.

Buy Potent Lyrium Potion Recipe in Wonders of Thedas shop in Denerim.

You can get infinite gold creating Potent Lyrium Potions and selling them to a trader. You can get infinite amount of the ingredients from the right traders (Concentrator, Distillator and Flask from the Gnawed Noble Tavern, the Lyrium Dust from the Circle Tower), and buying the ingredients actually cost less gold than the gold you get from selling the newly created potion.

Getting the ingredients from the previously mentioned two traders, you can make a Potent Lyrium Potion out of 1g 1s 10b. You can sell the potion at any trader for 1g 25s, so you make 23s 90b per potion. This is not much, but crafting potions in huge amounts you can make yourself practically as much money as you want.

Planetshooter's got it right. Arbitrage the price of the ingredients against the sale value of a potent lyrium potion and you can make thousands. Make sure you get the DA and CA from the Tavern (and not camp). It's fairly tedious, but you can buy everyone the best stuff.

The best origin moneywise is Dwarf Noble. Gorim in Denerim will pay double money for all items you sell to him. If you couple this with the Potent Lyrium Potion trick, you can get rich real fast.
