Also, destroying the base is not illogical. There's absolutely nothing there that hints at being useful, and giving it to Cerberus is a terrible idea.
There might be more people on the Destiny Ascension. But when you save it, you sacrifice many Alliance Ships, including the people aboard. That is many more than you would sacrifice with the destiny Ascension.
On a pure Paragon playthrough, I would save the council now, but it was my first playthrough, and I somehow feared that saving an already wrecked ship would cost that many ships that there is no way to destroy Sovereign.
