Typical disclaimer: I've played every RPG there is. I'm no noob.

This game is killing me. Every time I go up against a yellow or orange enemy, my party dies. I'm currently around level 7, playing warden's keep and its one frustration after the next. What the hell am I missing? Do I really need to set the game to Easy? This is definitely one of the most infuriating games I've ever played.

A couple Warden's Keep specific issues below (spaced for spoilers):
.
.
.
.
It took three tries to kill the rage demon. It seemed to be constantly regenerating health and I have no idea why.
The possessed female warden also killed my party once before I managed to kill her. Also, there seems to be a bug as I didn't receive a set bonus after equipping all of her armor.
Right now I'm at the point of the mage trying to close the gates and, again, its impossible.

Very very frustrated.

Console or PC? Why not set it to Easy? A lot of people are having trouble on Normal (I suspect because Bioware haven't put out a game with similar combat since BGII and a lot of people playing games now are too young to have the necessary experience). That said, if you aren't playing on easy, complaining that the game is too hard is kinda pointless. Now if you set it to easy and it became so easy that it wasn't fun, you'd have something there, I think.

****Spoiler****

The rage demon regenerates when the skeletal wardens (or whatever they're called) warp in on the four magic circles. Take them out first. The trick there is to do enough damage to him before they reappear.

I dont agree Chris, I played both BG 1 and BG 2 and your hero felt way stronger in both of those games - and if u played as mage, more spells, more mana and more damage. (Hell I had an easier time going thru the Goblin Bridge in Icewind Dale as a mage with 4hp than I do playing as a lvl 11 mage in Dragon Age). I'm struggling as hell in normal mode and I find it extremely irritating.

360. Yes, I can set it to easy, and very well may. It just seems like the difficulty is unbalanced. I feel like I'm missing somehing.

Yeah I did eventually figure that out. Even still, I have a suspicion that I went for the DLC quest at too low a level. Or does difficulty scale? Regardless, a very frustrating evening.

No one can help you if you don't say anything about what talents you have/what characters you have etc.

Mages are really really important. If you're a rogue, poisons are really really important.

You gotta plan your movement and choose skills wisely in combat.

@dimman87 -- you do have a point. It is fun to mindlessly slaughter a bunch of kobolds and feel like an uber Bhaalspawn. However, remember dying over and over outside Candlekeep? I do. Plus, I know DnD rules very well and next to nothing about DA:O rules, so that could account for some of the increased difficulty. I do feel that all battles are at least somewhat challenging and the mundane fights are most definitely more challenging. While I miss the feeling of uberness on the one hand, I enjoy the challenge on the other.

You shouldnt have to fight the user interface, which I feel you end having to do. It needs WAY more polish and tweaks, a far cry from Baldurs Gate 2.

I'm really not trying to be rude or trolling here, but I'm shocked there are "It's too hard" posts up. I died at first, but then I, literally, learned to play. With bosses or tough groups, there is usually a trick or special strategy to defeating them (which is a very GOOD thing). And now that I have a healer in my group, and am making healing/mana potions like crazy, I almost never die (except to boss fights, and again, that's till I figure out the strategey).

I'm wondering if it has to do with the group people are picking, or thinking it's a First-Person-Shooter where you just rush in, or not pausing and using some thinking to figure out each battle. You really have to look at weapon types, spell types, armor types, and other factors when facing tough battles. So far, except for bosses, I'm finding this game below average difficult on Normal difficulty setting.

@Chris; I agree, I'm not trying to make this game less challenging... just choose what monsters or enemies are. I dont want to load a game 10 times to fight off a band of thugs and their leader that for some reason can withstand 10 times more damage than myself. When I see a band of thugs I'd like to go PEW PEW METEOR STRIKE and not get the feeling that I'm a level 10 mage in WoW trying to defeat lvl 25 monsters.

The key to this game or ANY GOOD RPG is that you do not rush in. Rushing in to a fight means you die. Use your Rogue to scout, pre plan your attacks and have positions in mind. This game has a serious party tactical element.

If you take your time and worry less about how fast you can level or get the next neat itme, and more time enjoying the depth of the game you will find you die a lot less.

I dont get why people are whining so much either. If Normal is too hard for you, stop being silly and put it on easy. Obviously Normal is too much for you, whining is just silly when theres a lower difficulty mode.

The only thing I can think of is stupid pride. People dont want to be caught dead playing on easy because it makes them feel 'less manly' so they complain instead.

Yeah, let's break this down some. How are you dieing. I mean, what exactly is it that is killing each of your characters? Is it being surrounded? Is it friendly fire? Is it not having them set to flea area damage? There's many reasons, and you really just need to sit down and take a tactical look at exactly what is taking you out.

Trick that makes them game a thousand times earlier. Mages have roughly 67 different stuns, freezes or ways to crowd control. Must of them at range. It makes them game a joke on normal

I am currently playing it on Hard.

I was having great difficulty at first, mainly because I wasn't accustomed to playing a game like this, it had been quite some time since I have played the likes of Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale, Temple of Elemental Evil, etc.

But the cool thing is that I keep finding new ways to make each fight more manageable. For small example: At first I was not beginning each fight at long range. Now, I have each character equipped with long range weapons for their second weapon load out. This way, I have already whittled down the enemy before, and if, he reaches my party.

Also, I am a big fan of kiting a monster if it seems to want to focus on a weaker party member. Just run him around, trying to hang the monster up on certain obstacles, including party members;), while the rest of the party takes him out. I did this a little with the first Ogre that I fought, and it definitely gave me several seconds of "free" damage while it was blundering about trying to catch up with my party's mage:)

I would like to ditto what PurplePaladin said.

The game seems... frustratingly difficult sometimes, but one needs to learn how to use every feature that is given to us (especially the "tactic" window) to its fullest. Please don't give up, you won't regret your (small) efforts, trust me.

Once one accepts not to rush into battles like we were used to in other games (like NWN/NWN2), instead playing the abilities of our whole team out each time a serious battle is on hands, then the game REALLY starts to shine.

I would indeed have to look back to BG, Planescape Torment and the first two Fallouts to recall having had so much fun in a game.

Thank you, Bioware!

PS : Please do not change the Normal and above difficulty levels. Easy is okay.

Agreed. I think that is what I couldn't put my finger on, how in Neverwinter Nights, I was basically just charging in to most battles and owning pretty much every fight. I had to get around that mentality and start playing tactically in order to squeeze the absolute most out of each encounter. Initiative is king!

As much as it pains me to say - this is more of a strategy game than RPG. Fits right in there with Jagged Alliance.

I am playing on normal and I am getting my @ kicked too but I am starting to learn how to walk into a fight better.

I am not in full control of my party yet but as I gain more control over them I can feel the battles going more smoothly.
