I dont agree Chris, I played both BG 1 and BG 2 and your hero felt way stronger in both of those games - and if u played as mage, more spells, more mana and more damage. (Hell I had an easier time going thru the Goblin Bridge in Icewind Dale as a mage with 4hp than I do playing as a lvl 11 mage in Dragon Age). I'm struggling as hell in normal mode and I find it extremely irritating.

The infinity engine games and DA:O are all very exploitable if you choose to play that way and make everything really easy.  Just the same way you can solo through BG1/2 with Mage/thief, you can choose to exploit DA:O too if you want.  Get your main/morrigan/wynn mainly on ice spells and just cone of ice everything, gravity the mobs, kite, cone of ice, kite, cone of ice, kite, rinse and repeat, you can take the high dragons at lvl 7 in nightmare mode just running around with 3 mages lol.  GL doing that to Liches in BG2 on hardest difficulty unless you have about 30 traps you can lay down.

IMO, DA:O has more 'easy' buttons than other inifinity engine powered games.  Traps&Ice/gravity spells are just too ridiculously overpowered.

Its all been said before people:

Key points:

- This isnt WoW. Stop expecting your Main Character to be Uber. You need to /control/ your whole party.

- Rushing = Bad. Assess the situation, Scout ahead, make ambushes, set traps, use mage CC.

- Read skill traits and really set your characters to specialize into one tree. "Jack of all Trades"
characters have a rough time in this game.

- Spacebar. Pause the game. Its there for a reason.

- If you die, change your tactics. The hardest part I had in the game (**Spoiler**) was fighting the Werewolf pack at the very end of the Nature of the Beast questline. It took me repeated attempts to finally win.

- Relax, breathe, and have fun. This is a thinking game. You're gonna wipe, you're gonna die, you're gonna lose. But thats how you learn. ;)

This quote along with Drawn75 AWESOME examples guys. I think a lot more ppl need to ask for advice or search teh forums before they just complainign & slander this brilliant games name b/c they are frustrated.

I only recently finished Ostagar - was concerned about the last battle, from what I read it seemed tough

It wasn't easy, but I managed to kill it on my first try, with only Alistair dying

Let me say that I am a Pause freak - I usually Pause every time my main has cast his spell, and on tough fights I just pause every time any party member has used an ability... call me weirdo, but I love that!

Seriously. What the hell. People, stop goddamn sucking and whining. If the game is too hard for you, turn down the difficulty. And if you're still failing at easy, you should contemplate suicide.

I like the fact that even on normal i can easily die if i don't pay attention. It makes it so much more rewarding winning the battles. So if you don't like dying go play it on easy, if you like a challenge go play on normal. If you like to push space bar everytime 1 of youre party has done an ability go play hard and if youre suicidal play nightmare.

I'm not really finding normal difficulty to be any trouble at all, and it's been years since i've touched a similar title. The first time i lost a party member was to the Ogre, and only because he picked my main character up and pummeled his face in until his HP was gone. I didn't lose the fight still, and i'm not ashamed to use a potion now and then... I find that i use potions at a decent rate, and not at all every battle. I've done in gangs of bandits with a leader entirely without healing, it all depends on use of skills and pausing after everyone has finished an action. Lots of pausing for me.

I wouldnt call it too difficult, more like challeging.

There were fights where i had to relog a couple of times to get the job done. But that gave great satisfaction :).

some tips:

-'H' when u encounter enemys so your range doesnt run around the corner first.

-pause, focus everyone on the same enemy, when he is down repeat.

-learn from your enemy, bosses uselly do something strange just before they start that charge/aoe damage thing. time your stuns/knockbacks accordingly.

The game is tough, but far from impossible.
If its to hard then put it on easy? Surly easy isnt to hard for ya?

Try differnt tactics and dont just rush in there. It really is strategic combat in this game.

Hope it works out for ya!
I personally think the difficulty is perfect and a breath of fresh air, because in the last 5 years rpgs have gotten WAY WAY to easy for my liking.

Man, WoW has been coddling people for far too long. Bout bloody time there was an RPG on the market where I actually have the capability of losing.

as an oldschool PC gamer playing all the D&D games since baldurs gate, and also as a modern MMO gamer unfortunately playing WOW & AION. I really love the difficulty of this game , i never come to a challenge in new games these days being a veteran gamer everything seems to be made to be beaten with minmial effort.  Having to pause and choose everyones abilities and reload a battle a few times before noticing little tactics that overall help you win is a nice break from WoW where everything is given to you on a silver platter.

thank you bioware for a challenging game!

I agree 100%, this game doesnt hold you hand as much as newer rpgs do. It is just a beath of fresh air to have a challenging/tactical RPG with a great story again! :police:

Not necessarily tough in my opinion. I started on Nightmare at start and currently doing pretty ok after remaking my character 4 times while trying to figure out a good way to specialize it. Warrior with Two-hand weapon, going better than my previous attempt of a Weapon and Shield main. More focused in my skills and being able to equip the Dragon Armor by level 6 was a plus. I did however have to use that Tome for bonus attribute points that came with the collectors edition and I have the items from Dragon Age Journeys as well to compliment my character.

Playing on easy as i enjoy hack n slash more than timeconsuming tactics, i think this level of difficulty is harder than most games on Easy. Don't be ashamed of playing on easy, it just spare you inevitable reloadings.

There could have been more frequent autosavings though, like every 5th minute or so..

I started on "Normal," but just got tired of the excessive pausing and micro-managing (don't have the time for it nowadays), so I set it back to "Easy," and have enjoyed the game MUCH, MUCH MORE!

I'd say 'Easy' in DA:0 is like 'Normal' in past BW RPG games I've played. (NWN, KOTOR, etc)

If you didn't realise the Wardens were healing then you may need to wake up :D.

I killed it on my 2nd try on hard by setting Morrigan to nuke with tactics.

I am finding the game quite easy atm honestly. >.> I am running my main as a Tank since I found Alistar to be insufficient. Built up to Taunt early cause for some odd reason, it builds threaten to the point where I can sit there for 3 minutes while being pummeled without losing aggro. Got Leliana up front with the tank using songs to keep me going on the Stamina, Morrigan as crowd control with Sleep/Nightmare/Horror tactics, forcing enemies to be stunned or attacking each other as I pick them off. Wynne is full healing support on mainly just the tank.

Raised my STR up to where I could gain use of Blood Dragon Armor at level 6 and have been cruising ever since. Wish there was a way however have the AI continually apply a poison to a weapon cause the game seems to make it a 1 use tactic, at least on consoles. Wish there were ways to have the AI flank on its own as well. I also don't see a way to Revive a person with just tactics either so I have to switch between Wynne and Leliana sometimes during a fight if its really epic. Playing Nightmare without a hit, gonna attempt to take on a Dragon soon and see how I fare.

<.< Also I wish there was a Frozen Status in the Tactics menu so I could Stone Fist it with Wynne for the Shattering Combo.

For me, the hardest part of the game is managing my inventory. However, I don't think that can be solved by changing the difficulty.

I'm a little surprised at the number of people complaining about the difficulty of Normal mode. I haven't even patched my game, because I felt the buff to attack and defense was unnecessary. Sure, there's been a handful of fights I had to do more than once, but that's what makes it challenging, and I find it exhilarating. It actually makes you think how you're going to tackle an encounter.

For example, I just got my first piece of Juggernaut armor and it involved killing a Revenant, a yellow mob, and 3 white mobs. It took me 3 tries to do it, but it was really just a matter of figuring out how to properly divide and conquer the battle. By the third time, I knew exactly what to do, and while still intense, the fight went smoothly.

Granted, I pause quite frequently, and while that is why probably I have little problem with normal difficulty, it makes it akin to playing a leisurely game of chess. I can take my time manually repositioning and selecting skills for party members, and it allows me ample time to assess the situation.

The key to plowing through the game is simply figuring out how to properly divide and conquer encounters. Pay attention to what kinds of abilities different mobs have and figure out how to avoid or counter them.

Until I got a dedicated Healer, this game was kicking my ass on Normal; there's just not enough consumables early on to compensate for the lack of Healing.

Once you get a healer, it gets much, much more manageable. Or re-roll as a healer and go that way from the gate--I went with a Rogue because I cant stand to leave anything unlocked.

All your loots are belong to me!

Patience is the key, i consider mysellf quite the noob in tactical rpgs like this one but so far lvl 15 and with 40 hours into the game ive managed to do it in normal, you dont need to pause that much, you need however to use the tactic slots of your party members, they are amazing, even a small setup can make things much more easier, try focusing your DPS, like somene mention use CC and pull instead of rush, its complicated to rush specialy when facing multiple mages, and gear matters also, i found that on flemeth, was having a hard time on her, got the Dragonslayer 2h for my warrior packed alistair with fire resist. and down she went, dont give up on the game, its an amazing ride. :)

I felt the game was a little difficult at first as well, but then I finally realized this isn't meant to be played like most modern RPGs. Unfortunately I was about a third of the way through the game before facing up to the fact that I just had to start over and do a better job picking out skills. Jack of all trades absolutely suck, healers are a must and rolling a tank before I got Wynne and some decent DPS was just stupid on my part. I started over with a dwarf rogue using Allister to tank and my first stop was the Circle to pick up Wynne. The game is much, much easier this time around.

At the point I'm at, I don't agree that a healer is a must. I'm at level 11 and haven't picked up Wynne yet. Granted, I'm playing a mage and have Morrigan in my party as well, but I don't have either one specced to healing.

Adding my 2 pennies.

Everyone has some trouble in places on DA:O, also I found it rather refreshing (like some others have already said) to actually die quite a lot.  It's nice to figure out a boss and actually learn from what you're doing instead of *facerolling* everything.

Even on my really bad laptop, that can barely run this game (well according to min spec I CAN'T.. hehe) with 5-10fps, I did the game in 49hours, just completed it.  Some places I did a few hit and run tactics and bugged things, basically by accident ended up killing a huge pack using a locked door and spells through the wall :S.

I really did love the game, but the most annoying thing I found even after 5-20 attempts at some fights...

The end boss was one of the easiest, I was expecting.... more of a battle..

Ah well, I played as a tank, and switched Alister to dps.. made some bad talents/spells etc, but still managed it on normal mode.

I think normal mode on an orginal install (no update) is just right. Once you figure out how to deal with a challenging opponent the fight seems easier when you fight the same encounter with another char. I think it's sad they have made the party doing more damage in the update as I fear it will be too easy a game. Maybe it's time for me to try out the hard setting ... :)

In reply to people saying your hero felt stronger in BG 1 and 2, well ... duh? They're supposed to, you KNOW who YOU ARE in those games, right?

Dragon Age is interesting in that your player character is basically a no body, a Grey Warden, who are renowned and fierce fighters, you're the best, and the brightest... of the bottom of the barrel.

This has sort of been touched on but who you are playing as a your main, I've found, has made all the difference.

Honestly, on normal, My warrior/champion CAN just "rush right in" to almost any battle without me even having to pause. I've got the tactics set up, got crowd control, got heals, and got a good team setup. I might have to cycle through to adminster a health potion if Wynne is having trouble keeping up, but that's about it.

My rogue, on the other hand, started getting her tookus handed to her at about level 8. There is no way I can just have her rush in, because she can't handle aggro and all the baddies seem to go after her. There's a lot more finesse and skill involved and until I started figuring it out, I was dying in just about every encounter. And, like many here, I've played several RPGs.

I'm glad I got to explore the world and learn the game with my warrior because I didn't have to spend so much time micromanaging the team and I got to just play and enjoy the game without getting frustrated by the combat. So, I'd seriously recommend anyone having trouble start the game as a meat shield who can take some damage rather than a "finesse" character and see if you don't like it better and find the experience easier.
