Single-Ladies (Put a Ring on it) - Best music video?!

However, in what world is this the music video of the year? Whomever nominated it must have been drunk and whomever voted for it high. It's literally just a video of three women dancing. That's it! I understand that dancing takes a great deal of skill and talent, but common.
Anyways, the video.
Do you think it's Music Video of the Year material?

PS: No, it's a terrible music video but anything Beyonce touches is gold to them music industry.

Can you explain what you mean here?Servant of Nature wrote...
I much preferred it in Glee, I can't listen to that song without laughing, now. Entire football team dancing to that song. Glorious.

Yes, but surely there were a few that were better than that? It's like MTV didn't even try.the_one_54321 wrote...
i dont think that music videos ever are worth an award these days. so that makes the point pretty much moot in my book.

Honestly I'm so far out of the loop otherwise, I don't even know why some things are popular to begin with. I like a few of Beyonce's songs but it's not anything special, to me. Music Videos are sometimes really beautiful, but most of the time they just seem a way to cram in as much booty shots and grinding as possible in a 3 minute clip.

Oooh this thread is perfect for me to rant about how bad Taylor Swift's music vidoe is. So here's the deal:
1. She sings about not being the "pretty girl" that she wears jeans and shirts as opposed to the guy's girlfriend who's the cheer captain. Here's the problem Taylor: at the climax of the vid you're wearing a white prom dress (and probably high heels, which you sing about not wearing) that probably cost more then all the cheerleaders clothes combined! Contradict much?
2. That guy is a douchebag. He's the alpha male, football captain, hot jock, etc of the school. However he's too shy to tell her his feelings? BULL! And BTW if he had that "I Love You" note all along than why did he only show it once Taylor transfomed into the beatiful princess-like girl? Because he's a shallow moron who only cares about appearances that's why!
3...I could go on until about 7 at the last count but I'm too tired to rant much now. Maybe I'll update this later.
Oh yeah and I think the red dress is so much better then the white one...

Er. Is the gist of the song essentially: "I broke up with you because you didn't marry me"? Really? Really?"
Isn't it more like: "I broke up with you cause you didn't think we had a future together and unless you change your mind you have no reason to be jelous." ?

According to wikipedia, the song is popular because of its catchy beat and themes of female empowerment.

Sorry. The message of the song is some what empowering, I guess(don't stick with someone not willing to commit fully?). The message loses a lot of meaning to me with her dancing around with her butt hanging out, slapping her ass, and having a Terminator hand.the_one_54321 wrote...
out of curiosity, how is it not conveying female empowerment?

Everyone knows Britney should've won the whole thing.
As I understand it, Britney has a stomach and so is no longer worthy of attention.

I’ve never seen the video, but the lyrics to the song itself are also problematic. I dislike that it contrasts traditional feminine markers ‘high heels’ with traditional masculine markers ‘sneakers’ and implies that the latter is inherently superior. Then it goes ‘She’s cheer captain and I’m on the bleachers.’ Now there’s nothing *wrong* with being on the bleachers, but being cheer captain doesn’t just happen. It take work and effort, something that sitting on the bleachers does not require. If the two, yes, I think cheer captain is the more desirable state.
In fact, the entire song is based on the idea that a passive woman is more attractive than one that does something.
Next off, Sk8ter Boy, a song that chastises women for judging men on SEL, while utterly judging men on how much money and fame they have.

No, being hawt is not empowering. That's like saying that being white or being over six foot is empowering. Empowerment has nothing to do whether a random dude on the street thinks your ass looks fine in tight jeans.

strictly speaking, i dont see how being able to turn heads does not afford you some power.
keep in mind, that is strictly speeking, and not a statement of personal belief.
