I'm sure this is being said in all the similar posts to this, but I can tell you for a fact that content was not withheld from the game with the intention of bleeding money out of you later. A big ol' game like DA takes a friggin eternity to go through certification: through EA, Microsoft, Sony, etc., not to mention the ESRB stuff. A small DLC title doesn't, which means that while the main game is going through that nonsense, you can develop DLC, get it into cert, and then have it available at roughly the same time.

The reason DLC is being made available bit by bit, instead of exclusively in huge chunks like some companies do with expansion packs, is that people--myself included--like to have more things to play IMMEDIATELY when they finish a game. I loved Dragon Age and I'll play it through a few times differently, but I really want new stuff to check out, new things to use, and I don't want to wait forever for it. So, that's why there's small DLC.

Bioware also went to the trouble to create this website so that the same development community that sprung up around NWN could spring up around DA immediately. The toolset is out there and people are already making new levels that will soon be available to you for free. The effort that's been put into fostering this builder community by Bioware should be an indicator that they work in good faith.

Finally (sorry, long post), the price of the DLC reflects not the length of gameplay, but the total value of the area, which is gameplay + new items + new abilties + a new follower or a new camp. Looking at how long it takes to complete doesn't really give an accurate picture.

People ****ing about money again.. *sigh* anyway you look at it, whatever you paid for this game is a freaking bargain.. the amount of entertainment you get from this game compared to the cost is crazy.

As I said in the other thread, DLC is okay. Advertising for it in game is not.

Why exactly is advertising it in game not okay though? It's not like every five minutes you're interrupted by a splash screen or commercial. In fact, the quest giver even tells a fairly immersive story and the only the extent of the advertising are really two words in one of the lines of dialog you can say.. "Please wait while I prepare (Downloadable Content)"... I just don't see why people are upset about this.. I think it's a great way to introduce it. You could always just walk away from the elf, it's not like you're being berated with ads or anything.

This is EXACTLY the same as buying a book and having to pay extra money to read a chapter just "because". It's insulting to me what has become of the video game industry.

Exactly? Really?  You 'have' to do it? Really? It's just like a book?  Really ?

I think books are pretty much complete stories, unless the book is part of a series.
I think the Dragonage story is pretty much complete, and the DLC isn't needed as part of that story.
I think making small payments for things you might want is a great idea.  You don't have to buy it.  Trust me.
You do have to complain about every single thing you can, though.  If you do no, you will loose your existence and the universe will end.  It is your purpose and reason for being here.

In short, you do not have to buy the DLC, but you do have to complain.

What has become of the human race (people crying about video games while crimes  against humanity are going on right now) is insulting to me.

The game is over 80 hours question is why do you need dlc.

Most people simply cannot hold back and EA / Bioware knew this. Advertising these DLCs in the game is using the human weakness to their favor. They definitely have some clever people in the marketing batallion...

Whether they know or don't know that they're subsequently destroying the game community they definitely are successfull with this new DLC thing. It's all over the industry these days. Empire Total War, Batman Arkham Asylum, Fallout 3 and now Dragon Age Origins --> the DLCs of these games are going like hot cakes...

The industry knows only two false truths:

1.) It's all about the money.

2.) Blaming the pirates as the only ones responsible for the dying PC market always works.

-.-

Here we go again... this has been explained so many times and still people come dripping in, enraged, without knowing the how and why behind the early DLC.

We need a sticky, badly.

While Shale is really good, I find it a little troublesome that Warden's Keep was a $7 castle that you never get to enter after you "save" it. Especially annoying when the dialogue with the NPC mentions they'd be tidying up the place as well as being left with what feels like an incomplete story with Avernus since you never see him again.

So, I just hit the camp for the first time and was "offered" to buy DLC by a quest NPC. I just can't believe the sheer greed that motivated this design. Is this EA's doing or Bioware's? Did I not just pay $54 for this game? Did console players not pay $64? This is just ridiculous! There is no reason whatsoever that WK shouldn't have been included in the retail game, none. At least you could have left it out of the game entirely to make it APPEAR that it was created afterwards, but no it's right there given as a quest with a dialogue option of "Download New Content"!

This is EXACTLY the same as buying a book and having to pay extra money to read a chapter just "because". It's insulting to me what has become of the video game industry.

Nah its more like buying a book then having a advertisement in the middle of it for a short story set in the same world.
Yes I do agree it is a dick more to have him there and I also agree that this could have gone into one of the MANY other threads dedicated to this injustice.

The issue for some of us is not that they HAVE DLC, but the way it's being vendored IN-GAME. If it looks like the game was released incomplete... that is because Bioware inserted a quest into EVERYBODY'S game that can't be completed without spending money. They are responsible for the perception that you have to pay extra to get the whole game.

Just let folks DL the DLC from the start page, and most of the outrage, including mine, would go away.

IMO they totally blew it on this one.

I'm constantly amazed at the complaining about the DLC content in the game.  Enought people have commented about the fact that this is extra (and unnecessary content).  But what really annoys me is the complaining that Bioware (or EA) are "greedy".

The game has been in development for around 5 years with a large team of people.  Bioware hasn't been getting any revenue from the game until its release but still has to pay the team, so this all has to be financed by debt.  And then you blame them for trying to earn money from it.

So you've bought a game that is about 40 to 80 hours long with a fair amount of replayability and you want more content for free.  It seems to me that you are the one who is being greedy.

Anyone who bought the Collectors Edition via Pre-Order (Like myself) got both Warden's Keep & Stone Prisoner for free.:police:

Wrong.  Only for the PC.  I bought the CE Edition for $80 ! AND I STILL had to buy Warden's Keep. To top it off two of the bigger things I wanted from it don't even work! The Warden Armor set bonus doesn't apply and the Blood Grasp spell is stuck as a permanat status bonus for some reason and won't let me cast it.

If I'm going to pay close to $100 for a game, I want it to work and I'd like more than 30 minutes of game play.

Look I get it, I love the game. Bioware is one of my favorite compaines but that doesn't mean they get a free pass on everything.  I would think out of all things, the items people pay for (DLC items) would be tested beyond reproach.  Read these forums, there are lots of people with the same two items not working.  (Warden Commanders AC and Blood Grasp)

With all the sub 20 hour games out there for $50+ I find myself having a hard time complaining about paying for a little extra content in an equally priced game that can easily give 40 hours of gameplay in the main quest and as much as 100 plus if you put the time into it.

Agreed. :)

If you take your time with this game it takes you 1 hour to do 1%, which means 100 hours to get 100%. $7 for Warden's Keep is like a tip to the devs for making such a meaty, outstanding game. The only real "injustice" is that the Warden's Keep DLC currently does not work for EVERYONE who has bought it.

The worst part of all this is witho ut wardens keep you can not make the best sword in the game but you still can get the item needed to craft it with out it wont spoil it here but its like hey heres a item that makes the best sword in the game but you have to pay 7 bucks to craft it

Looks like they should not of bothered to give people who did not fork out extra to get CE the opportunity to get the extra content.

It would of been better to hear them whine about not getting it than getting it.

You do know people can buy the content just fine by clicking the "Downloadable content" button on the main menu without needing a shill inside the gameworld.

I bought the DLC before talking to the NPC, so I can't speak to the breaking of immersion, but I will say this: If I made a list of things I wish I didn't spend $7 on, Warden's Keep wouldn't be on it.

Wow.

As far as I can see, one does not have to purchase the DLC to enjoy the game and finish it (and to replay it, for that matter).

So in other words, DLC is OPTIONAL content that one can purchase extra for the game.

So no-one is forced to pay for it.

I am really having trouble getting my mind around why anyone would want to complain about that.

Now, I can understand some who are not happy about what they perceive as getting something worth the money they spent or not. I think those are valid reasons for complaining.

What I would like to know is, what the extra revenue from the DLC is going to be used for. I hope it will be used to fund XPs and Patches for the game. That would be a nice touch.

I feel the same way that several of you feel. I have received all my pre order bonus DLC and I am using items I was promised, etc. I have not covered the area to obtain Shale, The Stone Prisoner yet, but looking forward to adding this character to my party. I did download the Wardens Keep DLC and was quite surprised to learn how much I got for $7.00 plus tax. I thought the area was really cool. I enjoyed the tie in to the story with the demon possessing the great grandmother and the fighting. But, this DLC was way too short for the price. I finished and was like, "THIS IS IT!" That DLC could have sold for way less considering the length of time it took to complete. I have already found some areas that are taking me well over an hour to complete in the regular game. I hope that future DLC will be longer and offer more items, characters, etc. Other than that, I love this game and enjoying it!

As said before - DLCs are barely worth if they are free, let alone if you have to pay something. While Shale, ring and Dragon Armor are nice, I know I wouldn't bother to DL 'em if game didn't automatically add 'em first time I ran the game. I certainly won't DL any fan made stuff either. Main game is more then enough. Explansion, with totally new adventure and party is different matter.
