How viable do you think a vanguard no-scope rushdown build would be?

The halo-****** in me wants to try this and make it work.  I think the sniper rifles are accurate enough that this may be doable, especially considering the fact that all weapons get a damage boost at melee range.  I mean, I'm usually charging stuff in the face and aiming for headshots with my shotgun anyway, would there be any reason not to use my sniper rifle as a second shotgun?  (I mean, I already wear the 10% headshot helmet)

I wonder..   I think the starter sniper would be better for 1shotting things and it would be more cinematic, but the other sniper might be a little easier to use at close range, since a miss or two wouldn't destroy me.   I will try this when I get home.

Any suggestions on armor/weapon choice and strategy that would make this easier?

All weapons but Snipers do 2x the damage from melee range. Snipers suck in close combat.

I sort of did this impromptu during the derelict reaper mission on my soldier recently (veteran difficulty). I was using the Viper sniper rifle to snipe at the scions in the back of the room on several occasions but got rushed by husks. I found a melee followed up by two off-hand viper shots killed off any husks that got in my face, it worked but not as effective as a shotgun I'd say.

I have a Vanguard I play, I went with assualt riffles when I choose my extra weapon, that being said I do really really like the shotguns with my Vanguard at close range.

Hmm, no 2x bonus? That sucks, but snipers are still pretty damaging on headshots regardless. I wonder if doing it intentionally and practicing it could bring it to something that works almost as well as a shotgun.

I wonder if it would be worth passing up the krogan shotgun to do that, if I never intended to use the sniper as anything but another shotgun. (The main plus here would be that I would likely never run out of ammo in something I can use close range.)

Well, passing on the Krogan shotgun isn't a huge deal anymore, it's been shown that based on Taste the Scimitar and the Eviscerator function just as well. so if yo uwant to try it, you won't lose anything by not taking the Claymore.

dang i wondered about that. i always used my sniper rifle in ME1 at close range, thanks to HE rounds. i tried a little CQC with the sniper and it wasnt very effective at all. it makes sense tho i guess.

are shotguns limited to something like that at range then?

Shotguns are pretty mediocre at range, yes.
