No honestly, I just can't understand how people can prefer femShep to maleShep or even think maleShep doesn't work.
Cos I'm female myself? Please don't forget the possibility of female gamers...
I don't. Maybe I should have said: "I can't understand how people (male-gamers in specific) can prefer femShep to maleShep or even think maleShep doesn't work."
I know many of us prefer to play a character of our own gender and I respect that. I just don't understand MALE gamers going all crazy on femShep and hatefull at maleShep. It's crazy in my opinion. I don't want to stereotype anyone but I almost get the feeling that 90% of these male-gamers going femShep all the way are people who seriously need to get laid, I ESPECIALLY tent to think that way when I read this silly argument: "I dunno about you but I rather stare at a female's ass than a man's ass." *facepalm*
I hear that comment a lot...about starting at the ass. My fiancé doesn't understand it either, he always plays a guy since he is a guy. Having never played a male-Shep I can't really say what the reason could actually be but I've heard quite a few people mention that femShep voice acting is a lot better. Could be that then...I don't know.
Respect people wanting to play their own gender, or cross-gender just for the kicks of it (heck, my main good Fable2 character was a woman, while my main evil character was male). I just think that the female counterpart of Shepard (femShep) could have been a lot better than it is now. I think femShep is kinda dull overal and sometimes even awkward at some moments, though maleShep can be pretty awkward too in rare cases. But that's just my opinion.
I must disagree. Female Shepard is absolutely perfect as she is. She's a realistically shaped women with mannerisms, speech, and movements that fit her intense military training. She doesn't have any extra frills or anything because they are useless and pointless. Honestly, I think even wearing makeup is a bit of a stretch with someone like her(my femshep wears eyeshadow cause I like how it looks.)
As for being dull, I don't know what you're criteria is for dull but voice wise, no one is more dull than maleshep.

Seriously speaking, for me it's question of aesthetics. As a man i find the female form and voice more pleasing to the eye (and ear) than a male one. As for the "immersion" argument, i've never once during my over 20 years of gaming felt that i am the character. I can lose myself to the story or gameplay (the original doom from 15 years ago still accomplishes the latter wonderfully), but i never imagine being in the game. I never play as "myself" either, to me that feels awkward. I prefer to be an outsider, a director if you will, controlling what happens in the game, and as so the main character may aswell be a pretty one
Also, in my opinion the female shepard voice actor does a better job than the male one, except maybe with the renegade lines, her threats lack a bit of believability.
In the end, play which ever you prefer, no one will ever know. Unless you post about it into public forums

I'm one of those guys that prefer playing 'femshep' , and romancing the ladies.
I know, I know, I guess that could make me a man caught in a virtual lesbian's body.
I also have this thing for female action heroes, Xena/Lucy Lawless, Katee Sackhoff, Sarah Michele Geller, Ripley/Sigourney Weaver, Mili Jovovich, Kate Beckinsale, Angelina Jolie. And unrequited love for Eliza Dushku
Dollhouse was cancelled way too early.
And quite honestly I prefer Jeniffer Hale's voice work, on this series. It is exceptional!
As others have stated, she has the inflections down to a fine science.
Jennifer sounds natural and in command, and she can be compassionate or hard as nails.
I've played male-shep, but somehow, the game just feels right with 'Hale' in charge.
Which is why I only have, one male-shep (Hal), and 4 fem-sheps (Sara, Sarah, Ripley, and Mili J.)

Why would i, as a straight man, want to play with a male character?

I came into this topic to say something only to find that you had already said it, exactly.
I'll kindly ask you to get out of my mind.
