I really dont get the Jennifer Hale is great thing, I think outside the role of shepard she great with the games shes done but as shepard i find her cold and frankly boring I almost fall asleep when she talks and when shes not being boring I think shes being ove the top and just yelling at the wrong timesand making it through a female shepard i find hard. *shurgs*

Male shepard just sounds better to me I guess only one time in ME2 did i feel he was off or alittle dead in his talk and that was at the end when talking to TIM about blowing up or keeping the base.

One thing is certain, as far as I'm concerned: young males do not get to decide what is feminine or not. I recall, many years ago, watching a news segment, where the reporters were visiting a games development studio. The guys had a woman in a motion capture suit trotting around, picking up stuff, etc. They threw away the recorded data, because it wasn't "feminine enough", then redid it themselves, with ridicolous hipswinging and so on. One of the most cringeworthy things I have ever seen.

The two voice actors sound about the same to me; stiff, commanding, soaked-in-the-military types - possibly Meer is slightly more on the understated realism side and Hale slightly on the sublime acting side, doesn't much matter.

On Shepards gait, it might be worth pointing out that (s)he appears to still have the limp from being hit by Sovereign debris two years back.

Some people get so attached to a Shepard that even changing they way they look, and a rare few even the class, makes it feel wrong.

Guilty. My Shepard's almost all look identical. The earlier ones I made had the middle Complexion and a mediumish face in terms of quality. Newer ones have the first Complexion and a better facial construction. The most recent one I made is a very convincing Shepard IMO - the most realistic looking and best that I've churned out yet. But they all have the same stubble-beard set to the second-to-last notch of darkness, and they all have the same crewcut, all set to black (except for the most recent one, which has a dark brown instead). I can't imagine making a Shepard that looked different.

As for classes, always Soldiers. I'm not a very finesse-y person. Playing an Engineer would be an absolutely horrible experience. I couldn't even finish the game I started as a Vanguard.

As a female, I like having the option to BE a female in this game. In my opinion Hale's voice acting is better too as Meer's just feels flat to me.

Even if it's the same script, I relate to the character's female version better. I think it's damn HILARIOUS to see a woman headbutt a Krogan. I like the differing romance options. The only thing that would need work imo are some of the animations as she doesnt move in a feminine manner at all.

If you dont like there being a femshep, don't play as her. It's just an option that those who DO - appreciate having.

To me, Meer is better at sarcasm and humour, which makes sense as he is a comedian. His weak points are the less interesting lines, which he tends speak a bit too monotonously. Meer tends to be better at Renegade lines.

Hale, on the other hand, isn't as good at the funny/sarcastic/violently angry stuff, but is much better at the basic conversation lines. She makes FemShep seem like a real person. As a result she's better for Paragon lines.

In terms of quality, I think the differences are quite minor, especially as of ME2.

yeah. threads like this are just idiotic. the OP is clearly luring Femsheps in by making the title "Femshep..." and then bashing Hale under the guise of "hey, i'm not trying to be all harsh about it blah blah blah". it's junk. a waste of space on the forums.

Hale's voice acting is NOT superior. Seriously, my only complaint about femshep is how she has the same monotone, low tone of voice for EVERY line of dialogue. Hale just sounds like she's trying to hard to be badass.

This isn't to say Meer is anything fantastic. Heck, some of his lines are just creepy-sounding in the talimance.

But to say Hale is superior is just...inaccurate. Same tone of voice for every. Single. Line.

Am I reading this right? uhhh

Just saying that being a female woman doesn't automatically give you a free pass at acting like a man.
Not saying that I have a problem with women who act like a man in reallife, but in a videogame it does bother me. Like I said earlier in this topic, characters need at least SOME stereotypical character traids, because without a few stereotypes we can't get a grip at the character, that's how human psychology works, we NEED stereotypes. A female totally acting like a male just doesn't cut it. However, a female with male traids, withou losing her female traids, works like a charm.
In my opinion, femshep in ME is more like "female acting like male" and not "female with male traids".

Summarized as: 'she doesn't act like a woman'.  classy.

Here I was reading the entire thread and thinking to myself 'this guy doesn't like femshep because she doesn't totally conform to a stereotypically female gender role'.

QFT. Nice avatar you've got too.

Everyone needs to come to the realisation that it comes down to personal preference and nothing more. I'm glad that the "I'd rather stare at a chick's arse than a man's arse for 20+ hours" argument is null and void because of the angle of the camera, you can't even see anything below hips that well unless you are storming.

My baseline playthroughs are with a (non-default) MeerShep, but there's really no comparison.

Play through I Remember Me twice, and if you don't notice Hale's huge advantage you're out to lunch.

The voice over of female Shepard is so much better than the male version. I have played both.

Jennifer Hale is an excellent voice actress, loved her as Bastila, but I do agree. I prefered Male Shep to Femshep.

It could just be the marketing and cover art and such hammering the default Shep into my head whenever I hear the name. To each their own.

I still don't see the "so much better" factor between Hale and Meer. They both seem "ok" to me.

See I can't play as a MaleShep because it is just too funny. I've seen so many "Douchebag Shepard" vids on youtube that everytime I hear Mark Meer's Shepard I feel like he's going to punch some random person and then I just start giggling...

I have no doubt that maleshep would be an amusing Renegade playthrough, especially as John Shepard, but I like the Paragon route, plus I've never been able to tear myself from my redhead, infiltrator, beauty, femshep before. I've only ever played as her. She IS Shepard as far as I'm concerned.

I am female, I play a female, I also prefer JH VA but probably because that what I did first not because one is better than the other, frankly I found this whole discussion ludicrous.

It's like primary school, 'Boys are better than girls because they ...... well ....... they're poo!'

Seriously?!

Yeah, I don't get it either.

I understand the whole Hale vs. Meer thing. Kind of. I still think neither one is better than the other.

But Shepard is Shepard. I have two active characters, of both genders, that I'm playing, and truthfully I'm not finding anything immersion breaking, wierd, or unnatural, or otherwise wrong as a femshep character.

Although for some reason, I tend to play my femsheps as cold, heartless b*tches. But I don't think that is Femshep's fault. ;)

@Jho, I couldn't possibly, well not without some cheesy porn music :-p

@KainrycKarr it's funny you should say that about femshep because in all seriousness I always play my maleshep's as a bit of a tosser who'll sleep with anything, I guess that says more about us than the characters though ;-)

I love Femshep. Sigourney Weaver as Ripley was a sort of model for mine. Tough, steel willed, but also capable of being compassionate and maternal. Hale captured that beautifully.

PS. I'm a straight guy. :o

Easy to say, but wouldn't it be awesome if femShep had her unique animations and dialogue lines to make her stand out a bit more, instead of a female character-model being copy-paste over the male-character animations and Jennifer Hale redoing Mark Meer's lines?

The reason why I don't like femShep is because she doesn't feel natural to me and that is because she's a female-model copy-paste over the same script as male Shepard (with a few differences here and there). FemShep walks, talks and act like a male. Yes, you heard that right, I think Jennifer Hale tried to sound to much like a hard-*ss masculine b*tch instead of just a natural realistic woman.

Like someone else said in this topic, Mark Meer sounds realistic, he talks like how a real commando would talk in reallife. Jennifer Hale sounds clearly acted. FemShep doesn't sound like a female commando, she sounds like someone who tries to ACT like a female commando.

Yeah I also found his post a little obscure...

Sometimes I get the feeling some people worship femShep as some sort of religion. If anyone dares to say something negative related to their beloved femShep, (s)he'll get flamed. We all know that real Mass Effect fans play as a female character. And love to stare at asses.

Just try to ignore it...

Creepy vs. monotone.

Everyone has their own lesser of two evils.
