I didn't know what would happen when I tried this. I thought they might all end up sleeping and die, but Alistair ended up resisting, fighting the shade, and commenting about what it was afterwards. That was interesting. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised. As a templar, Alistair's mental resistance is way higher than the rest of the party's. Willpower is still pretty much default at this point, since I'm trying the forest first this time. Alistair's mental resistance is at 20 compared to 4-5 from everyone else--PC, Sten, and Dog.

No one has to go to sleep in that encounter. Remain suspicious, and everyone will resist it.

Indeed ejoslin, but sometimes it's fun to do it the other way.

Hm -- I don't think I was given the chance to continue resisting -- I ended up with three dialogue options, all of which put me to sleep.

It's when you first enter the camp, if you choose "more suspicious than inviting," and then as you try to leave you choose, "let's not fight it," you keep your whole party. But Susan is right, it takes a very fun fight and turns it into a joke.

Edit: And yes, don't examine a thing.

You just turn around to leave, don't examine anything. The game won't let you actually go - and the shade reveals itself.

Edit: *shakes fist at ninjas*

Aha. I did all that, except that I did examine the tent and bedroll. That's why, then.

Well, yes, you can not play along, but what fun is that?

Yes, supposedly the one with highest willpower will be left standing.

Actually, anyone with a high enough willpower can resist and remain awake.  I once had myself, Wynne, and Sten all up and fighting while Leliana took a nap.

I've only gone into it once - and it was Wynne who stayed up (despite my primary, from memory, having a higher Willpower).
She had Revive. Posted Image

That's exactly how it happened for me.  Revive + Cleansing Aura really trivialised the encounter.

Huh, I'm kind of surprised. I thought the whole point of that encounter was that someone had to fight it alone. Guess it's just a battle that makes use of the willpower stats.

Its Willpower. Wynne stayed up when I did it and hit revive on the group. After that I usually took the "walk out" option and triggered the shade. Don't forget to grab Zevran's gloves out of the box under the tree. (will appear after the encounter is done).

Wait a sec... This doesn't make sense. If I have Wynne or Morrigan in the party, they wake up by themselves. If Alistair wakes up when they aren't there, why doesn't he wake up when they are. Hmmm.... Maybe there's a minimum threshold set by the highest willpowered character?

the two times it happened, I had only ONE PC wake up, the one with the highest willpower (Wynne). In the strategy guide (Prima) I have it says the highest willpowered person. I have never had more than one stay awake (Morrigan died when I did it, and ONLY Wynne stood up). thank goodness for revive.

Yeah, this is what's always happened with me--except that I've never done it late enough in the game to have revive. It's actually a good thing that Alistair did the fight this time. This was the first stop after Lothering on this playthrough, and Morrigan would have had a bit of a tough time I think.

My low-level Morrigan had a surpisingly easy time handling the Shade while the rest of us napped. Vulnerability Hex + Winter's Grasp + Drain Life worked nicely.  It made me realize that's a great starting selection for a pc mage.

All about the willpower.  I don't know what value you need exactly, but anyone with a willpower of X or higher will remain awake.  I typically only spend points on willpower if I'm playing a mage or a 2h warrior.  In either case, I always stay up and Wynne will as well if she's with me.  In the one encounter I described above, I was playing a mage, I had Wynne and Sten with me, and I put pionts into willpower for Sten.  All 3 of us stayed up and took down the Wraith easily.  Leliana's willpower at the time was pretty low (under 20, I think), so she slept through the whole thing.

I thought the Warden was the only one that has dreams like that? Alistair asks if I had been having nightmares and I immediately thought of those elf frolicking halla infested rainbows and said 'yes'.

I thought the cool down period for these would cause a problem. I guess lightning and archane bolt filled in the downtime?

Morrigan somehow doesn' have Arcane Bolt (I guess because she didn't learn from the Circle). But, yes, lightning helped, too, and it also gets a boost from the hex.

Oh, right.... I was mixing her up with Wynne for a moment....
