Actually, in Dragon Age: Origins, Zevran hits on you pretty openly. And Liara mentions liking you in Mass Effect. So some NPCs so hit on you; the NPCs in Mass Effect 2 however don't seem too (Kelly picks up on it though), aside from Jack though that's less of a "hitting on you" thing and more of a "I bet you are just like everyone" thing.
In DAO, the romance options are so obvious that they can easily be avoided. If you go back and play Zev with a male PC, you'll see that Zev does not hit on you out of the blue. His dialogue presents an option, if you are overly nice to him. He'll try to flirt with you if you're a girl PC, but you can easily shut him down.
In ME, Liara only goes the relationship route with you if you pick the dialogue options that prompt her to think you'll be receptive. It's very easy to avoid and even easier to shut down. If you're definition of "hitting on" is that a dialogue option presents itself, then I see what you mean. But the bottom line is that if the NPC says ANYTHING that the PC doesn't like, it is easy to shut the whole thing off and have it be like it never happened. There is little risk to a man's heterosexuality that would require that the whole notion should be removed from public contemplation. Male romances need not be treated like some big dirty secret.
That's true about Zev and male PC. (It is easy to shut him down. A little too easy actually). Leliana though...maybe it was because I was being overly friendly? She always falls in love with my female PCs. Multiple times. Even when I'm romancing Alistiar. (Heck let me be honest. I always romance Alistair.) It must be the shoes line. Bah. >_> Or the calling her attractive. Why can't you say someone is pretty without hitting on them BioWare? People do that in RL all the time you know.
Lelianna is an exception. If you talk to her about her background at all, she falls in love with you. Still, you can shut her down easily, once you know her cues. In fact, you have to say some rather dicey things to her to get the relationship to actually progress. Most people would be able to recognize the implied innuendo in some of Lelianna's romance queues.
However, the f/f romances are always more overt, because they are not subject to male het rage. F/F gets a pass, no need to make it difficult or hide it; after all, it's there for the het male titilation factor, not to provide realism for lesbians or bisexuals. They would never make a m/m romance that would be too easy to get into or too hard to shut down immediately for fear of a het male stumbling into it and experiencing A Moment Threatening to His Manhood.
