Okay.. so is there a trick to beating this boss as an Engineer? I try to set up tactical positions with my squad (Thane / Grunt) and I try to focus the Reaper's eyes when I can. But the longer you spend on the map, the quicker the Collectors come.. Mind you, I don't have any heavy ammo neither.

As you kill the collectors, they drop both normal thermal clips as well as small heavy weapon ammo containers on the ground. They are usually on the platforms where the collectors land when they fly in.

Yeah, I do that.. But as stated, the longer you're in the fight, the quicker they come. Eventually they start to overwhelm my squad.

Hmm, what advanced weapon did you choose? If worse comes to worst, Cain cleans his clock. (I haven't played insanity engineer yet so I can't give any true engineer tactical advice) both the assault rifle, and the sniper rifle shut him off just fine. Grunt may be a liability in that fight on insanity, due to his likelyhood of Rambo'ing the incoming collectors.

The Grenade Launcher is the Heavy Weapon I choose. I also have the geth pulse rifle.. But I just can't take him down fast enough. Takes me like 10 minutes to get him half way.

oh ick, Pulse rifle not so good against him. You may be stuck using the hand cannon.

Fortunately when you die, you can swap out weapons. However, I didn't research the Cain weapon therefore, I'm screwed haha.

GAH!... Got him to 25% and then I got flanked by Harbinger and two guardians with my teammates dead. GG.

you know what you have to do? now that you have a feel for it, you know whats going to happen, you know what you have to do, now you just have to do it. it sounds easy, but i had problems at different parts on insanity. id get really frustrated and just keep trying to get the damn thing over with. sit down, take a deap breath, and say to yourself, "this time, im going to kill this mother ****ing reaper."
it worked for me when i was recruiting garrus. that one krogan kills garrus so fast i was having major problems. it took me a few days to do it, but all that knowledge i gained from playing over and over just helped me beat it. i said "thats it! im going to kill this mother ****ing krogan."
and i did.

The only issues I've had on Insanity were the Collossus fight, the Collector ship, and this boss. I got him down to 5% and then somehow, some way, I fell through the earth (Mind you, the reaper DID NOT blow up the platform beneath me.) So then I'm like. "Okay, I got this." Get him down to 10% and I get flanked by Harbinger and the Reaper..
I think this fight's more frustrating than the collector ship for two reasons: The first is that it is much longer, thus offering a better possibility of you messing up throughout the fight. Secondly, there is no real strategy you can stick with that would assure your survival. On the collector ship, I was able to find a strategy that worked to my favor, it just took me a while before I could execute it. I can't do the same here for some reason.

Don't ignore your pistol. A fully upgraded hand cannon is quite effective against the giant terminator, just be sure to pick your shots and only hit vulnerable points.

I haven't used an Engineer but I HAVE beat him twice on Insanity. Try using Thane and Legion/Garrus. Equip them with sniper rifles. Even better if Legion's got the Widow. Since you're an Engineer, I assume you and Legion can spam drones to keep Harbinger busy while your team snipes him. Let your squad handle the collectors and focus on the reaper. If Harbinger is getting too close you can lend them a hand. Don't use the grenade launcher. That's terrible. Use the Collector Beam. Don't use it outright. Wait until Harbinger starts showing up. Then shoot it like crazy. Throw in the occasional warp from Thane. At some point your cover will get destroyed. It's likely that your squad will die and the collectors will be closing in. However, at this point the reaper's life is way down and if you do it right, you'll be able to get the last shot in in the nick of time.

Yeah it kinda sucks you didn't research the Cain. With all the heavy weapon ammo upgrades and the heavy ammo pack leg armor you can fire the thing twice (consecutively in fact, no 4 second charge required for the second shot) and take out 2/3's of the human-reaper's armor on Insanity.
As for myself, I always brought Miranda and Thane for that fight. Just spam Incinerate/Warp/Warp on the Reaper as each of you reach cooldowns. Combat drone Harbinger to distract him and wipe out regular collector drones with Warp/Incinerate to save your ammo for the Reaper.

I used Tali, Legion, and an infiltrator Shepard with Assault Rifle training and Warp Ammo as my special against the Reaper on my insanity playthrough. I did not use my tactical cloak or sniper rifle at all during the fight so that essentially made me an engineer Shepard without the extra Combat Drone CC on Harbinger.
I took down the Reaper by having my squad concentrate on the Collectors while I hit the Reaper with pot shots from my tempest submachine gun and vindicator assault rifle. I would have one squadmate toss up a Combat Drone on Harbinger and order the two to take down any regular Collector, having the other squadmate toss up another Drone when the first died. Rinse and repeat. The Reaper itself does a very nasty AoE spread red beam attack that will damage friend or foe in the path, so what I would do is when the Collectors spawned in I would position myself with the Collectors inbetween the Reaper and myself. Nine times out of ten the Reaper blast would instantly kill off all the Collectors caught in the blast since the Reaper will always target the player and not your squad, just be sure to have your squad behind cover and out of the path of the beam.

well, I played as engineer class first time. even this class has possibility to go high if you go all missions and rescue, research to upgrade all your powers. actually, I did. but it was still little weaker than soldier or other classes. yeah, fighting against boss takes little more time than normal. but I defeat it anyway. but 5 of my crews were just dead who they were all loyalty. that was little weird. I went to IFF mission before Tali to get Legion as my last crew. I failed again. I don't know.

The Engineer doesn't have the same amount of damage dealing potential as the Soldier. In fact, the two classes have a different playstyle entirely. Engineers rely heavily on manipulating the battlefield via Cryo and drone. They also deal some heavy damage and are great at stripping armor and shields. Soldiers are good at bursting down one target but need to depend more on your squadmates for CC or cover fire (from what I gathered at least.)
You may have had five people die based on two things. The first involves your ship. Each squad member has options to upgrade the normandy with the right amount of resources. I advise doing so since it provides you a good start for when you pass the Omega 4 Relay. Also, if you upgrade your ship, you won't lose anyone prior to the fight in the Collector's base.
Another possibility for having people die is choosing the wrong person for the wrong job. I don't want to spoil the experience by telling you what to choose, but one example of what I am talking about is having Mordin lead the distraction squad. Clearly he is not one capable of doing so.
The final boss was challenging but after replaying it and getting Miranda and Thane, I was able to down it on one attempt.

Agreed. It's a bit silly but aside from the Cain the fully upgraded Heavy Pistol is so much more powerful than any heavy weapon, packs way more punch on armor than anything in game. F*** the heavy, useless anyway. And refill ammo from dead collector's.
Using a fully upgraded pistol I took on dual Scions without even breaking a sweat on Insanity, they go down in just a few shots. If you have heavy warp (yourself or on a squadmate) you can kill a Scion on Insanity in a few seconds. Way, waaaaaaaaay faster than any of the heavy weapons...

I don't know if this helps, but I just beat the game with an engineer on insanity, and defeated the larva (when I read "lava" in the subject I was wondering...) only having to reload once. I used Samara and Grunt, and the Collector particle beam weapon (with all upgrades and 10% bonus heavy weapon capacity, I think it was 1000 capacity and even so I had to reload by picking up a dropped heavy weapon power pack). I generally used drones to distract the harbinger, while killing off all the other weaker collectors with reave (both my engineer's bonus power and Samara's) and, given the height and platform edges, Samara's throw when collectors were down to health only for insta-kills. Whenever the larva showed up, except for using drones to distract Harbinger, I just shot at the eyes.
I'm not necessarily recommending those characters, I'm just saying what worked for me.
