Has anyone tried having 4 companions left for the end?  Also I am wondering if I do this, will I have to defend the gates inthe final battle?

I'm thinking about trying this my next playthrough.  I plan to only use the companions that I will keep.

Primary team:

Dog
Ohgren
Allistar (Loghain in the End)
PC

It will kind of be a Evil character and most likely get Allistar a high approval rating and then just double crossing him in the end.  I'm gonna side with the Templars (which I've never done) so Wynne will be dead right away.  I'm gonna leave Sten caged up and never activate Shale.  Leliana I'll get rid of after I defile the Ashes and Morrigan I'll drop at the ritual.  Zevran is as good as dead.  I'm gonna kill him on the spot.

For the PC character I'm not totally decided.  I would like a healer, but I play mages alot.  4 out of my 5 games were with a pc mage.  I'm not sure if I'll have a good balanced team without a mage.  It will be mostly warriors.

1. I've never played a Rogue so I was thinking about going that route and trying dual weapons which I have never done.  Also I've never used traps or bombs and I barely touch the surface of poisons.

2. I'm kinda on the fence going with pc mage.  I have never done a supporting/healing mage so that's what I would do for sure.  I've never played Arcane Warrior so I would do that, but I wouldn't use it to tank.  I would use it for the better armor and better protection for casting.

- So either way I can do something I've never done and I'll use some companions that I rarely use.  Plus I've never did the dwarf or eleven origin stories.  So I'd like to toss that in as well.  It'll be like a whole new experience.

So for those who played rogues a lot would I have any issues balance wise?  I know if I go PC Mage it'll be easy for me.

If I go Rogue I'd want to choose from Assassin, Ranger or Duelist.  I've had plenty experience with Bard using Leliana so I wanna try something else.  I've never really used any of those and I've only tried Assassin with Leliana.

So would Ranger/Duelist be a good setup?  I don't have Duelists unlocked yet either.  So if I did that, I'd probably go for Ranger first.

When can you tell Ohgren to leave?  I don't wanna setup as a team, then have a solo game in the end.

You can also kill dog at Ostagar if you aren't a human noble.

You could try what I'm doing right now, party is a Tank, a DW warrior, a Rogue Archer (or hybrid) and my PC-Dalish Elf DW-Rogue with AoS. It's a blast. I always tend to play mages myself...but this is fun. I do have Morrigan on the side if it gets to where I "must" have a healer.

I decided to go with a Rogue.  I'm gonna use dual weapons and I really wanna focus on Poison Making.  Also I wanna avoid using mages completely.

I went with the Dwarf Commoner back story and so far it's probably the best begining story I've played.  Plus I'm playing a female character and I was kinda surprised how they really pushed prostitution and arranged marriages.  Kind surprising, but it made for a good story.

I currently just finished Lothering.  I'm gonna keep a group of 4.  I could loose more companions, but I like the group dynamics a strategy and I wanna try out different companions.

So far I left Sten in the cage.  I wanna get Ohgren early because I'm gonna use him for the entire game.  So Orzammar will probably next on the list just until I get Ohgren.  Then I wanna hit the Cirlce of Magi and kill off Wynne and side with the Templars.

After that I may just go straight to the Ashes and I'll probably take Leliana so I can kill her after I defile the ashes

It's like a completely new game for me.  I'm doing so many things I've never done before.  It should be a fun and interesting game.

Are there any type of guides for Poison Making?  If not I plan to really get deep into it.  I'm buying every type of poison and bomb recipe and plan to test it out.  I may make a short guide during this playthrough.   Wiki seems to be lacking in that area.

Dual wield rogues can solo most of the game once you get Master Stealth, so I think you'll be alright without a mage. It'll be interesting to see if you have to defend the gates, or the game glitches on you.

I'm planning on a poison-using character, too, and the wiki provides good details on ingredients and effects. The best ones are the bombs (level 2), concentrated crow poison (level 3, 6 nature damage per hit and 15% chance to stun for 7 seconds) and quiet death (level 4, 10 nature damage per hit and 55% chance to instantly kill non-elite targets at less than 20% total health). Be sure to side with the elves - you'll need Varathorn!

p.s.  For nature resistant critters, demonic poison is the best (spirit damage) but you can't buy the ichor and I haven't kept track of how much can be found.

Shameless plug but... if you're using a PC you can always use Wolf Shop mod if you would like to side with the werewolves without loosing out on the stuff you can buy from Varathorn.

A mod I am actually interested in, thanks Barz. I thought it was a little silly also to be punished for siding with the werewolves when losing elfroot allied crate exp is a major punishment already.

The werewolves, and the forest spirit thing simply fit in better with my ideas of "good". The dalish are no better than humans because of Zathrians actions and deserve to die.

Given how OP phrased dealing with the characters, I declare him my hero. This is a great idea.

So the Wolf Shop proprietor is Thornpaw, eh? That kinda suggests Vara-thorn doesn't die but gets transformed...

Update:

Everything is going as planned.  I didn't get Ohgren as soon as I wanted to, but the auto leveling system did a pretty good job so I won't have a problem.

My Rogue started off kinda slow and squishy and is probably not your traditional build.  Now she is turning around and starting to tear it up.  In fact the entire team is pretty strong.  Dog is slightly lacking becasue for some reason I didn't go straight for Overwhelm, but he'll have it soon.  I'm kinda dissapointed in the Ranger spec.  I'd much rather have a shapeshifting mage then have Ranger ability.

Current team:

PC DW Rogue
Dog
Ohgren (Beserker/Templar)
Allistar (Tempalr)

I left Sten as planned so he was probably killed in the Lothering take over.  Wynne died as soon as I met her and I cleansed the entire Circle.  I lost the prcious metal quest though. :(  I went for the urn early and I killed Leliana at the ashes.  Then Morrigan has just been sitting in camp.  I was kinda thinking of just stripping her of all gear and having her wait in her underware.  Also I left Shale.  She was never released.  Zevran I killed on the spot.

I'm getting Allistar nice and buttered up for the Landsmeet when I'll side against him.  The camp is pretty quiet and empty.  I may romance Allistar sense I never have, and it'll make the double cross so much better for my character.

Oh, also I killed Genetive (sp?).  I didn't expect the knife throw to the back of the head.  I'm heading for the warewolves now.  I would slaughter the elves but I need the merchant for poison making.  Plus I've never slaughtered the warewolves so that'll be something new I can do.

It's kinda nice not having to manage an entire party and I'm selling all gear I'm not using.

Ah, it would have been funny had you woken up Shale, brought her to the Anvil of the Void, and then sided with Branka and killed her when she turned on you. Still, this playthrough sounds hilarious, I'm going to have to try it. Maybe I'll wind up solo in the end, too...

Actually I could still do that......hmmm

Edit:  Will she automatically turn on me or do I need specific dialogue options?

I think, from what's I've read, she'll turn on you automatically. I haven't tried it yet though. I'm subscribing to this thread. I want to know what happens. :)

I'm gonna kill Shale off then for sure.  I'm gonna be heading there soon.

I compeleted Redcliffe and to keep the evil character going I had the mother kill her son.  I still got he extra point and shield from Eamon as a gift.  So that was good.  I already had the ashes so that whole section moved along really quick.

Also I killed the Talking Tree and sided with the Mad Hermit which is something I've never did.  So I'm either gonna slaughter the warewolves first or roll through the Deep Roads.  I think I may do the warewolves so I can setup Allistar with Jugg Armor.  Ohgren is my official spell resistant Templar and Allistar is the backup.  Both have full Templar abilities.

I'm mopping up RTO right now and getting the cash for Rose's Thorn.

Since you have no healer, I suggest stocking up on the unlimited elfroot the elven merchant offers before you side with the werewolves. Put one point into herbalism for someone in your party to make a mess of heal pots to take to the final battle. My last playthrough I did that - I had two rogues, two warriors - it was a cakewalk, and lots of fun -

Loghain - Warrior/Champion I think he is...

PC - DW reaver/Templar with 2 Blood skills

Zevran - DW Assassin/Duelist

Shale - Big rock thing that hits like a tank.

I'm killing the warewolevs so it shouldn't be a problem.  I've never straight out killed them so it'll be something new for me.

Allistar has 3 points in herbalism, but I will have to stock up before the Landsmeet when I double cross him.  I've already romanced him, so the double cross should be extra evil.

Yea, she turns on you no matter what.  I released her right before I went into the Anvil of the Void section.  As soon as I sided with Branka, Shale tells Caridin that she'll fight at his command.

Caridin is sooo much easier to beat then Branka.  Even loosing Shale it seemed 10x easier.  Maybe it was just my team, but it felt easy.

So it's going good overall.  I'm close to the Landsmeet and I'm about to enter the Alienage.

So far I've killed Wynne, Leliana, Shale, Zevran, & left Sten to die.  I plan on killing Allistar and sacrificing Loghain.  I have Morrigan sitting in camp in her underware.

So it'll be myself, Ohgren, and the Dog to be the remaining survivors.  Also I killed Genetive, the Talking Tree, all the mages, and slaughtered the warewolves.  Plus I sided with Branka so I'll sacrifice some dwarves in order to get my Golems and I tainted the ashes and killed the Reavers.

Oh and I let Jowan escape and convinced the mother to kill her child.

So it is a pretty solid evil character.  I can't wait to backstab Allistar at the Landsmeet.  He's primed and ready.  I was thinking about sleeping with Morrigan just for the heck of it to round off the evilness, but I am a female characted and I don't think it's possible.

But I was good to my sister and made Behlen king.  Gotta support the family. :)

Why is it when you say "support the family" I think of the mob? Anyway, sounds awesome, I'll be playing an evil character later too, but still on my second playthrough for now.

If you let Sten's approval drift low enough, he will fight you for command of the party, but he doesn't die if you win.
