Out of curiosity, I tried to romance Ashley on my latest playthrough, but ended up with a whole lot of nothing. Which responses kill the romance? Or can someone tell me which conversation activates the romance flag? The only times I was hostile to her was calling her father a zombie and telling her poetry was boring.
...it was probably calling her dad a zombie, wasn't it?

actually i think you can get away with calling her father a zombie. Have you been talking to Liara at all? In her first convo did you chose the "You're out of line" option on the left? Can't think of anything else that could kill it...if it's not one of these maybe it was calling her father a zombie.
Oh wait I forgot one, probably because I shouldn't have to ask; are you playing a male shepard?

Yeah, playing Dudeshep all the way for the first time. And I completely ignored Liara. It's kinda funny, actually, since I now have no conversation options at all with her; if I try to talk to her she just spouts a line about how it'll all be over soon and sits back down, with no dialog wheel.

I always have both until they confront then I choose Liara because she pwns Ashley in the argument

Ash romance trigger (available ONLY for male Shepard) is "What about me?" question when she say that she will be ready to kiss even Turian check if you order her.
And really... making fun from dead people (specially somebody's parents) is not cultural even in real life.
