It seems to me that both hacking and dominate have fallen somewhat to the wayside, especially when people start playing on hardcore and insanity. From my own experience, however, I've found that their tactical use increases the higher the difficulty gets. It becomes a matter of finding the target that will cause the maximum amount of chaos and/or destruction. For instance, hacking a Geth hunter, or dominating a Blood Pack pyro, has proven to be a remarkably fast way to either decimate or disperse dangerous groups of enemies. Indeed, I ran an experiment and had a surprisingly successful "save the boxes" run in which my insanegineer, Zaeed and Miranda managed to save 17 boxes, largely thanks to level 4 hack tying up the two central YMIR mechs.

So I'm curious, who else has been actively using these skills on the higher difficulties and how have you been doing so? How many points do you put in to them? What situations do you use them in and what do you target? Are there any particularly difficult or noteworthy fights that you have turned around with the use of these skills?

I've had mixed and weak results with dominate. By the time the target recovers from being stunned, locates a target, and fires on the target, dominate is about to wear off. Then I have to deal with the guy wanting to kill me again, and I've sacrificed several seconds of drone-spam for it.

What rank of dominate were you using? Have you tried taking it up even just to rank 2, and targetting the enemies that do horrid things to you if they get to close range? Pyros stand out as arguably the ultimate dominate target, even just a couple of seconds of them firing on their companions on insanity difficulty can clear half the enemies around them.

I would never say they are useless. The question becomes are they more useful then other talents you could get instead? The answer is -almost- always no.

I think I had it up to rank 3? Pyros were good yeah, but most others weren't. They'd spend most of their time being stunned and/or moving around to try aquiring a new target. They rarely had enough time to move themselves into a place where they could put down some proper damage, or at least get themselves killed while being a distraction (care of barrier bonus).

It seemed easier most of the time to not bother and just finish them off once they were injured enough to dominate.

Not that spamming drone was much better. Drone lifespan could be measured in tenths of seconds. I had a pretty poor experience with engineers, all said.

Had L4 top option dominate on my adept running through insane. Its fun but in reality it doesn't last long enough to do anything. The most that would happen is my enslaved victim would take down the shields of a normal enemy before changing back. It should last at LEAST 50% longer to be effective.

I have had great results with AI hack on my infiltrator. I love it when a group of mechs start shambling towards me and I hack the one in the back. It blinks a few times and then takes out it's brethren who take the added time to turn around to retaliate. Nothing is better in my opinion then hacking an YMIR and have it get a rocket or bullet spray off before getting deshielded, where I pop from cover and hack it just to buff again.

I'm just starting an insanity runthrough, and I am definitely going to try to see what I can do with dominate.

I wouldn't mind a bigger shield buff. It's slightly sad to get an YMIR and it only have a 1/12 of it's shields at hack. I kind of hope for a third or so.

Improved AI hacking on Tali, Legion, and my infiltrator destroyed Legion's loyalty mission. Just focus fire on the hunters, AI hack it, move on the the next one, etc. Also, against YMIR mechs if both your squadmates are down, it does pretty well.

It gets useless in collector missions, and other missions where there isn't even a combat drone to hack. Still, I prefer maxing it to disruptor ammo on my infiltrator.
