Also, and I'm sorry if this makes me sound ignorant, but why do we humans have those rules?  I'm not familiar with the structure of the military command chain or the hierarchy, so I don't know why those rules exist.

Mostly so that an individual can't be accused of "favouritism". Also, because it can be seen as an abuse of power. There's a few angles to it.

It's also one of the biggest reasons why I couldn't romance Kaiden in the first game.  Military mindset prevented romantic entanglement, at least in my brain pan.

So, 20 mins later, I've caught up!

Just something I figured I'd add to the conversation:

Sovereign’s speech about creating the tech to lead all organic life down an evolutionary path leads me to think that it’s only once they hit space faring age. I don’t think it extended all the way down to the foundations (like primordial goop stage and up), but it seems it would imply that there is some sort of common thread to evolution of the galaxy and organic life if every Reaper cycle, organics can find, utilize and capitalize on Reaper tech. That's kind of a side tangent.

As for alien sex, you know, there's enough commonalities with humans in the books and the games, I'm going to go with the devs just really didn't think all that far into it. We, as rabid fic writing/contemplating fans have all the time in the world to pick something apart. I'd like to think that I can have fun with figuring out what some of the differences there might be, and some of them might be non-reconcilable (is anyone really hot for Volus? I mean... seriously? /shudder) but I'm A-OK with that. Every Sci Fi that's going to involve drama is going to have this type of thing come up. Most of what would attract beings together is going to be whatever's going on in your brain, that sexy sexy organ that it is.

So yea, I'll have fun figuring out how a turian/human relationship is going to work, or if the rash after the drell was worth it. Figuring out the science is just part of the fun. XD

None of this makes sense, I'm gonna stop now. o.o

I fully expect them to be mole-men.

Or hobbits. I can just see Elijah Wood jumping out of a volus suit and shouting "It's my preciousss!"

A few scattered thoughts, since original post was semi-serious...I'll try to respond without running afoul of any rules or good taste...

You could just recommend buy that xenophilic porn magazine for 5 credits (can't remember if it was on Omega or the Citadel...) for answers...

Humans and aliens can have sex for the same reason as in "Star Trek" (e.g. Spock half human/vulcan); it's more interesting?

For in-story justification, aside from the Prothean base on Mars, there's that bit in ME1 where with a bit of exploration and the item from the consort, you can find Prothean study/interference with humanity about 50K years before. Why not with other developing species also, pre-Reaper involvement "tweaking" or seeding planetary environments with something to increase likelihood of similar development? Or 50K years too short, perhaps the Reapers or another long-ago group millions/tens of millions/longer seeded the galaxy with something intended to encourage parallel development.

There is in-game conversation about how the Asari don't actually get DNA from the other "parent", it's more of a mental imprint.

One could argue that evolutionary pressure tends to favour sexual reproduction (in the sense of, contribution of genes from two entitities) as a survival trait, the Asari being an exception (and rachni?) and either a strong sex drive (e.g. entering "heat") or pleasure from sex in order to encourage reproduction.

One of the particularly amusing responses Mordin makes to a "let's talk" question is a comment about how he's dealing with an onboard sexual infection that originated with a varren...

As for "compatible" sex organs, not required. If one wants a more detailed explanation, perhaps one could post a question in one of the numerous same-sex romance threads requesting a private message response - or, you could just use the Internet...

As an aside, related to different species reproducing, there are a few examples on earth (horses and donkeys = mule, sterile, leopards and tigers = liger I think).

Lions and tigers :) Pretty awesome-looking, too. Leopons are leopard/lion mixes.

And this isn't a hybrid, but I love having any excuse to post a picture of an oarfish:

Such awesome animals! And it seems few people know about them.

My husband mentioned why in the Star Trek universe there is the possibility of hybrids. He mentioned the fact that there was an ancient race that basically left genetic "seed" in different planets, universes and thus there are similarities with Vulcans, Klingons, humans and other species. Also it was easier budget wise to make everyone humanoid.

For all we know the human race is a hybrid of aliens and some animal that was on Earth before. Science can be of assistance and so on.

You assume that every one of the love scenes includes intercourse.

I'm not sure it did with Garrus.  I like the guy a lot, but the loving forehead to forehead thing was not exactly telling. He did say that he wanted to blow off some steam with Femshep, but for all we know there was something unusual or unexpected going on.  He did say he had to do some research on how to do so, right?

For starters, 'If A then B' does not equal 'if not A then not B'.  You're eager to assume that it does.

I was responding to the idea that he was tying together the idea of matrimony with a taxonomic category, not constructing a syllogism.  I admit I responded hastily and didn't frame my objection well.  However, aside from the fact that I didn't pursue the point after he responded, you utterly failed to address the completely accurate criticism that I leveled against his argument.  You said absolutely nothing about the part of my post that you quoted!

Since you seem to fancy yourself a master of logical construction, you should recognize that red herrings in the form of ad hominems don't make good arguments.  You're calling me an idiot and making an objection that has nothing to do with the validity of my subsequent statement, and then pretending that you've defeated my argument. If you aren't going to address the real argument, just shut up.  You aren't contributing anything useful.

to be fair, that sums up about 95% of the entire thread.
