So I just finished the game with my Dalish elf.  In the origin, she ran into an old friend of her parents named Ashalle who I didn't have enough persuasion to get to tell me the whole story of my character's parents.  Later on, somebody (Varathorn?) even referred to how they passed on as tragic, but also didn't say anything.  So, I see Ashalle at the final ceremony and think "AHA!  Now, I'll get to hear the Big Secret".  But no...she just goes on about how proud the whole clan is.

So.....what was the secret?  Does anyone know?  What happened to the Dalish Elf's parents?

Yeah I had a point in persuasion, so this is what Ashalle tells you.

Your father was killed while your mother was still pregnant with you. Your mother left you with the clan and disappeared into the forest (likely to commit suicide).

They didn't tell you because they don't want you to become bitter and angry at her for abandoning you.

They were killed by bandits - human and city elves. Ashalle raised you, she's your foster mother. If you have the persuade, she gives you an amulet that was your mother's. Your father was the last keeper before the current one.

Edit: damn ninjas ;) And yes, your mother wasn't killed by them, but she suicided (one supposes) from grief.

The Dalish PC's parents are both dead. Her/his father was the keeper of the clan and his/her mother was in a family/clan (think maybe it was a different clan) that didn't like the PC's father. So they had a "forbidden love" of sorts and married (or joined, I think is what the Dalish call it?). Later on while the mother is pregnant with the PC, they are ambushed in the forest by bandits. The bandits kill the PC's father and the mother is overtaken with grief, after giving birth to the PC she dies of a broken heart.

I am probably forgettng some details (been in awhile since I did this dialogue) but that is the gist of it.

Do we know the mother is dead for sure? I thought she just ran off.

I never finished my Dalish playthrough, but I was hoping to find my mother (or find out for sure what became of her) but it doesn't look like that will happen.

Thanks all! Didn't feel like creating a whole new character just to interrogate her :)

I was hoping that your personal character at the post-coronation would be your mother. Ah well.

Wouldn't that be the most awkward moment in DA:O?

"Hey son/daughter I know I abandoned you when you were a baby to wander the woods for some unspecified reason, but I'm back now to celebrate your big victory."

On top of that how would you know? Any female Dalish you don't know could be your mother, it's not like you can detect the presence of your parents or have hereditary tatoos (if you've gotten enough tatoos that you're passing them to your offspring get help)

It says your mother just walked off into the moonlight, as I remember. I wondered if she could still be alive, too.

Probably why they rejected it, that scene is supposed to be short and sweet.  Personally I would like it to be more involved.

If she was there, it would be because she knew you and came to see you.  And yes, it sure would be awkward, but I ws still hoping you'd find her.  Just as I hoped for something about your family in the mage origin.
