I haven't been a rogue (just 2 times but I quit during Lothering) but traps seem useless. Any tips on how to use them and when to use them? Thanks

Traps are great. Use them in chokeholds.

It really helps to have level 2 Stealth.

No traps for me. Too much fun to flank.

I use them in choke points. I thought they were pretty useless until I figured out the stealth thing. Also you can reuse traps that don't get triggered.

Yeah, I'm going the whole hog this playthrough: traps, poisons, bombs. It's quite fun. As everyone else said, use them at chokepoints, and get as much stealth as you can. I like to scout ahead, disarm the enemy traps, and set some of my own. Then move the rest of my party into view and backstab the most likely target (usually a mage). Good times!

Just watch out for friendly fire on some of these.

You can lay traps, then pull your enemies into them. It is more useful on the higher difficulties when they are stronger, and you need something to wear them down with.

Exploding shrapnel traps really tick off High Dragons, seeing as what they're going up after all. >;)

That'll teach 'em for swooping. Swooping is bad.

Traps are also great for when you've played the game and now what to expect in the next room and such...

I have nightmares about those shadow wolves in the forest overwhelm spamming me to death.. *shivers* Traps helped me alot for those, just ran in made em chase me into a doorway full to traps and such xD

Only time I've used them was when I was playing as a Rogue. Only because Rogues get a point to spend on skills every 2 levels rather than 3. So I had the luxury of spending some points on trap making skill tree. Lots of fun & very useful when your an archer with no melee skills.

You need stealth to make traps worthwhile, so pretty much limits this to rogues. Also, some traps plans are better than others, in early game go with freeze, shock and shrapnel (you can buy these in Lothering), and buy and keep all the different rocks and shards you can find. You will need these for trap crafting. Later, the grease/acid combo trap is very good!

You really do not want to be around these when they trigger cos of nasty AoE, so put party on hold well down range, set them at choke-points and along narrow corridors, de-stealth in front of a mob, get them all aggro on you, then run like hell past the traps and watch the fun....;)

Occasionally, when I expect a large group of enemies rushing me. I set up a few claw traps for those in the forefront. These will get caught right on the edge of a few spike traps, then when the stragglers run past those in the claw traps, they all get caught in the explosion.

You don't necessarily need stealth to make them work, if you have points in survival.

Rogues start with poison mandatory (a problem I've turned to mods to rectify,) and never have traps by default.

Traps are pretty useless to me. The damage and debuffs just don't justify the cost of materials or the waste of skill slots, and the effects usually don't last long enough to create an exploitable weakness. And that's not even taking into consideration that the player is always on the offensive or in a defensive situation that doesn't allow the setting of traps beforehand.

I love traps. And don't forget overpowering lure. You can get high level enemies to run a gauntlet past your entire team getting pasted the whole way and ignoring it and then get stunned at the end. I filled up the drakes cavern with freeze and shock traps and stood on the steps with a bow and there wasn't much left of them to hit. A good tactic with traps is to set them with your party back on hold, run in trigger an enemy charge, and then beat feet back to the party. Depending on the trap you either knock 'em down a bit or slow 'em down for more ranged damage.

I've played a Rogue using traps and I found them not worth the picks. The damage and effects are neat to look at but are negligible overall. I'd rather put the picks into something else like Survival.

Even with maxed Stealth, you can only get so close to the enemy to plant traps and if they're high enough level, they'll eventually spot you. I've had a few instances where I was laying traps and they spotted me and mobbed me. Kinda wasted the last 2 minutes setting up the ambush only to have it cave in on me. Minor burn!

There's also the inventory space required to store all of those traps and trap-making materials. You also have to buy the plans to build these things. Of minor consideration are the traps taking up slots on my quick-bar which I'd rather reserve for my abilities.

Given the choice of buying traps/trap materials vs a tome or better armor, I think I'll opt for the latter option. To disarm traps, you need lockpicking skill. Despite the Trap-making skill giving an increased sensing range, I can't see any reason to invest in it. Unless you like making things go BOOM!!

You can reuse traps that don't get triggered? Now I'm interested!

I've never had any enemy in the game detect my high level rogues(Normal, Hard), regardless of it's difficulty unless I attacked first, or stepped on a trap. They'll sometimes follow you around in stealth but never actually attack you.

Traps are great for normal difficulty, anything above that though and the duration effects don't really last long enough to be effective.

Maybe I was too close to the enemy when I was planting the traps. I like to sneak right under their noses. Mind you, I'll bet some of the enemy have Lock-picking and probably detected my traps. So, there is a counter to using traps; that is, your traps have to be sophisticated enough that the enemy does not detect them. Especially while you're trying to lay them.

I found the process too time-consuming and the pay-off negligible.  I could do as much damage with a DW Sweep or Whirlwind and have a better chance of hitting my targets.  Traps are hit-and-miss and you usually only catch 2 or 3 of them.  I've played the trapper - not for me.  Posted Image

I can walk right up to them in stealth and was never detected even while applying poisons etc. I usually have very high cunning though 60-70.

I only made them to get the achievement, and I only used them because I thought I needed to to get said achievement, which I didn't realize I already had.

In other words, No.

High CUN rogues shouldn't have a problem being detected in Stealth. They also won't need to put more than 2 skill points into Coercion, and so will have extra to put in Trap-making.

I layer traps to get more damage out of them. A simple spring or grease trap to make the enemy fall down, or claw traps to hold them still, on top of fire or acid or shrapnel traps to damage them. While they're all clumped up, have a mage toss a Fireball at them. Good times!

I'd only use traps as a rogue or during a solo game, though. Rogues have the leeway in their skill picks to throw a couple points on Trap-making (and they get Stealth, which is also helpful), and during a solo game every little edge is useful.

Why won't they need to put more than 2 into Coercion? I've actually been wondering how it works.

I love use traps as a form of crowd control when I really don't want a mage in my party. They are great fun if you use them right.
