I just started having Zevern use traps this time through the game. They are great when combined with another character having survival. Having your party stay put ("hold position") and getting the enemy to chase one party member through a gauntlet of traps can really reduce the number of bad guys. I also like to bait the enemy using an A.O.E. spell like blizzard or tempest, they run out of spell and into a hallway filled with 7 or 8 traps and it really takes a toll on the enemy.

My biggest complaint with Traps, is there is not enough Trap Triggers for sale, once the supply is exhausted at all the shops, etc. then you can't make anymore traps and its not a big supply either <25 I'm guessing.. You can salvage the ones you make that did not go off, but eventually all will be set off and you will be trapless.

Does anyone know where to get vast quantities of trap triggers in the game. I've been every place you can purchase items except for the Dwarf in the deep roads in this playthrough.

If there is no other way to get trap triggers then I don't see much use in getting this skill, since I've explored about 55% of the game and only have two traps left.

Barlin in Lothering sells unlimited trap triggers. They're inexpensive as well.

As far as I know, the only place to get unlimited trap triggers is Alimar's Emporium in Dust Town, Dwarf Land...the one place you haven't visited yet. Figures, huh? :)

I was being frugal with my traps because of not having enough components, just using one or two at a time to soften up enemy groups, mostly small shrapnel traps. Now that I'm in Orzammar--oooh! I can make shrapnel traps galore! (It's also nice to open chests in the Deep Roads and find not one, but two Frostrocks or Lifestones.)

EDIT: Oh, I didn't know about Barlin in Lothering. It seems inaccessible right now though, being overrun with darkspawn. Will have to check later...

You'll have to check next play through, once Lothering is overrun, it stays that way. Kinda like stocking up on elfroot before you side with the werewolfs.

Edit: Typo

Thanks for the tip on Dust Town. I forgot about that guy, I went to all the other shops but his. Okay I'm loading up on trap triggers and heading back to the Dragon Cult to give them a lesson in trapping. I may even lay a couple dozen on the High Dragon's landing zone before I ring the gong. Should be a pleasant surprise for that nasty little dragon....

@OP Rcclassiks: Grease traps are fun in close quarters. Create an oil slick and blast away with ranged weapons. Just be careful to stay beyond the effect.

I'll have someone pull and run directly over a damage-type trap in the hopes they lure enemies into the center of the blast. I could be wrong, but it seems the amount of damage varies with the enemy's distance from the center.

Also, you don't need to have lock-picking skill to disarm and reuse any of your own traps left over after the fight. I know, because I don't have lock-picking, and for the longest time I couldn't figure out why Leliana could disarm/detect enemy traps but I never could. >_>;

@Xavier: Do'h!
@John Tefi: Good luck!

I have been having a lot of fun with the traps. But I think that the recipes for some of the traps are too expensive considering how little gold I have for the first half of the game. 6-8G is way to expensive for a trap recipe IMO. Especially when you can only earn so much gold throughout the whole game. Although I have heard selling full health pots is a good way to gain a decent income.

I have read somewhere on this forum a poster claiming that traps are bugged. Is this true and how are they bugged?

Could an experienced trapper/poison rogue please list what are the best recipe I should be looking for when making traps and flasks.

High CUN rogues shouldn't have a problem being detected in Stealth. They also won't need to put more than 2 skill points into Coercion, and so will have extra to put in Trap-making.

Why won't they need to put more than 2 into Coercion? I've actually been wondering how it works.

from this (http://social.biowar...66/index/243304) guide:

V: COERCION
The information here comes from UT_SkillCheck() in utility_h.nss. Credit goes to Codrus0 for finding it!

The coercion formula is simple to state. Every rank in Coercion gives you 25 "coercion points." Every point in cunning above 10 (for Persuade checks) or in strength above 10 (for intimidate checks) gives you 1 coercion point. The most difficult coercion checks require 100 coercion points to pass. Coercion checks are deterministic.

This means that Coercion 4 should be sufficient by itself to pass every Persuade or Intimidate check without any investment in cunning or strength. Coercion 3 is sufficient if you have at least 35 cunning or strength, as appropriate. And so on.

The first time I did use some traps but I find the materials and recipes to expensive and the effect to little. Same goes for poisons

If anyone thinks traps are useless or not worthwhile you haven't used them right. When you get a large mob of enemies and most are stuck in claw traps, it's hilarious and makes the fight trivial. Just lay a handful of traps outside a door then open it. The mobs pile through and get stuck possibly blocking anyone behind them. You just stand there and pick them off. Totally useless right?

And for poisons, using something that does extra damage and can stun them is not useless. You get a lot of free poisons throughout the game and tons of components are looted. You just need to pay for vials mostly and a couple other cheap items. They're seriously worth using.

I used them during my first (Casual) playthrough but I obviously had no idea how the game really worked so it didn't always work out the way I wanted it to.
In my current cloned game I have not used traps but I may rethink that strategy. Depends on my saved cash and such.
