I was thinking during the course of most of this evening on how to spice up the romances in ME3.

And I finally arrived at the most hackneyed of plot devices: love interest gets kidnapped by the Reapers/the enemy/whatever and put through a terrible ordeal.

It is certainly cliche, but I trust that BioWare can implement such a plot device successfully.

I mean, watching a love interest being mistreated/abused could build a far greater emotional connect between that character and the player... Not to mention, it would also make a great rescue mission.

I had thought of this but i think their will be a twist she/he is indoctrinated and is ur main enemyin ME3..... maybe?Image IPB

Exactly what I was thinking!

Hey it could work....

Bioware have been there and done that in Balder's Gate II. LI gets taken and turned into a vampire which you then have to kill and find a way to bring back.

I hope to god they don't do something so lame in ME3.

LI kidnapped? Hmmm.... could... be... possible....

Somehow, I do see some sort of Liara-saving.... she's good, but still new to the game.... plus, I think putting a hit on the SB is asking for trouble

I would be really bummed if the LI was captured, especially if you stayed loyal to them from ME1. I mean, you already went through a whole game separated from them, doing it again or worse turning them against you would just be too much like a kick to the privates.

"Congratulations, Shepard! You stayed loyal and remained patient! Here's your reward!" *BOOT*

I would much rather have Ash kicking butt next to me as a squadmate than rescuing her.

I don't think I'd mind riding to Tali's rescue again.

Memories of Anomen being vamp-snatched during Baldur's Gate 2. Further memories of "Should I bother rescuing this self-important snobbish dweeb that is my character's only official romance option?" I'd go after Garrus, Jacob, or Kaidan. Thane, clear your damn throat. LOL

Sounds fun.

They should make you kill her

More emotionally engaging.

Well, there's one problem: your love interest isn't exactly a wimp that can't handle themselves. Also, they are likely to be with Shep. Liara being captured by the Shadow Broker could make sense - though you would wonder why it would happen now. Wouldn't it have been better for the SB to make his move while Liara had no friends, instead of when Shepard is alive with a ship full of loyal and powerful people?

And if there is a subplot involving your love interest getting indoctrinated and you saving them I will seriously consider never purchasing a BioWare game again. That's about the laziest plot twist I can possibly imagine and has absolutely been done to death - I actually get nauseous thinking about it. If I wanted something that melodramatic, I'd be playing a JRPG.

I'd kill everyone else in the room first. Or swear that I loved Miranda and kill her first. Or Liara. Liara would be sacrificed first.

Maybe he/she/it/they never felt threatened by her before. Maybe she got too close. And as for te how, unless she kills him in Mass Effect: Redemption, the SB still has the biggest damn salarian I ever saw.

It's been done in BG2. Would it work in the Mass Effect series? Possibly, but I'm not so sure.

It's also been done in KOTOR with Bastilla, where she is both captured and turned against you.  I think there is such a thing as going to the same well too often.

Well, I wouldn't be too scared of indoctrinated Ashley. I left her in her Phoenix armor with her Lancer I.

This.  It's kindof a trite thing to do.  That's not to say that it -couldn't- work, just that they'd have to write it -really- well for most people to take it seriously/not think it was lame.

LoL for some reason I am picturing Rorcshachs scene from The Watchmen.

Go ahead and capture any of my love interests. They'll do that line, where they say "you don't understand, I'm not stuck in here with you, you are stuck in here with me *evil grin*".

I agree with this:

(and if you don't have a LI, who would be captured? Joker would work I suppose)

I lol'd.

I wouldn't really mind something happening to your LI for drama's sake as long as;
  • It doesn't span half (or more) of the game.
  • It doesn't involve death (yours or theirs) or permanent disfigurement (yours or theirs).

If either of those happened, I would be very put out.

I would alright, if the kidnapping is early in the game, and once you rescue them they join you again on your squad. Like a recruitment mission. Otherwise it's pretty much a cameo.

I wouldn't mind this either, as long as it was done well and your LI was still with you the majority of the game.

Btw, does anyone know if its possible for your LI to die in ME2?

Only if you cheated.  Then your new LI could get kidnapped and your old LI has to help find them!  Would be super interesting!
But thane only has a few months, so I'd rather him not spend them tied up in a reaper dungeon...but tied up in the captain's courters will do just fine...

Didnt BW already mention that your LI will play a pretty big role in ME3?  It would be logical to assume that a "kidnapping" of some sort would take place.  Of course, seeing how the hell they would kidnap Jack would be funny to watch...Funny to watch as in funny to see her turn most of their heads into a pretty little pink mist before she FINALLY was restrained enough for her to be taken lol.
