So I've read people's reasonings behind choosing one or the other going from "she's racist" to "he's boring" to "she's got a close family that needs her" to "he's got rare biotic powers" to... well, you get the idea.

But I wonder if anyone else bases their reasoning on where each squad member happens to be at the time. I almost always save the member that I sent with the nuke. Sure, Kirrahe says that once it's armed, very little will stop it from going, but dammit, I want to make absolutely sure the geth aren't there to stop it. So I double back. Which kills me every time, because, while it makes sense in a roleplaying sense, confronting Saren at the AA tower is just so much cooler cinematically.

Um, but anyway, so I was wondering if anyone else bases their squad member saving decision on whether they think it's better to save everyone at the AA towers or save everyone at the nuke, and not because they value Ash over Kaidan or vice versa.

Yeah, I actually go back for the nuke every time except for my final play through that I did to reach level 60 for import purposes to Mass Effect 2, and the only reason I went to the AA tower on that play through is because I'd never actually been there before and wanted to see it. I felt it was a much more short and disappointing fight than the bomb site.

It does seem like a shorter fight, but I do love seeing Saren holding you over the edge with the watery death below.

Yeah, saving the party member at the AA tower is just so much more dramatic. As is the cutscene where you get to watch the person left behind watch the Normandy fly off without them.

It probably works best where the person you sent to the AA tower is the person you're romancing; that way, even though you know it's wiser to go back and help defend the nuke, you can't abandon your love interest on the tower.

I usually end up trying to save the Salarians since sometimes if I go to the nuke site the animation cut scenes get all messed up on my PC :-P As for who I save Kaid v Ash... usually depends on which one best complements my playstyle. If I have a Bastion character I always save Kaiden cause I like the extra stasis.

I save the person at the AA tower on every playthrough after my first so I can save Kirrahe. He's a bro.

I never actually use either of them (Garrus and Wrex 4 lyfe), but I usually end up letting Ashley die, since I always play a combat-oriented class and she's redundant.

Wow on my ME1 playthrough I don't even remember the option to save both Kaiden and Ashley, if I'm correct in what I'm reading here, i.e., don't remember an option to go to the AA tower...which, now that I'm reading this, kind of ticks me off because I was never able to reach level 60, even doing every single side-quest in the game (I'm sure I may have missed a couple though), and using the Uber-paragon and renegade dialog options. I only made it to level 59, and my ME1 saves are mostly gone except for VERY late in the game unfortunately.

That being said, I saved Kaiden the first time because I wanted to exploit the Paramour achievement (I play a female character). On the third playthrough, I saved Ashley because I romanced Liara. I'm considering starting over ME1 from scratch just so I can reach level 60 before starting another new game on ME2. But the question is: IS IT WORTH THE EFFORT? Is anything in ME2 significantly different if I start a game at level 60 as opposed to 59? Feel free to message me with an answer to this. Thanks.

IMHO, I liked Ashley's spunk, and despite his powers, Kaiden was a weak character. I almost always went on missions with Garrus and Ashley, as I used a Vanguard and found this balance to work well except when I needed serious tech abilities, in which case I used the Quarian. I never used Wrex in the game at all; I know there are some big fans but I pride myself on taking Krogan scum out, all hail the genophage.

I"ve never liked Kaiden, with either MaleShep or FemShep, so I've usually left him to die and saved Ash instead  .

I always go to the AA tower, saving Captain Kirrahe along with you squadmate seems like the best outcome.. that and he deserves to live after such an awesome speech :)

I love Virmire because its so epic - hate it because I have to leave Ash or Kaidan behind. I think they're both awesome.

That said, I just can't kill Kaidan. I always feel bad about leaving Ashley though, seeing her sitting there in her pink armour, and thinking about her sisters. :(

EDIT: I don't think I have ever managed to kill Kirrahe. I've done two FemShep playthroughs recently. Both save Kaidan, but one fights Saren at the AA tower and one at the bombsite. Does the site at which you fight him actually affect the salarians? :?

Kirrahe's survival does not depend on you going to the AA tower. That said, the tower has a lot easier battle (no Geth Prime) - especially at harder difficulties.

I think I first went to the AA tower on my 3rd time through... and I've not gone back to the bomb since. As others have said, it's just way cooler. So I send the person I've decided to save with Kirrahe early on. As to who I save... depends on usefulness mostly. Though I do find it harder to leave Ash.

Well im gonna be biased, Because i absoulety love Ash to bits, so erm yeah i left Kaiden to die on Virmire, i didnt do it lighltly though because he's still cool but i just couldnt do it to Ash, and i found Ash to be the better squad member for me anyway.

In my case Carth (aka Kaidan) was doomed from the first scene on Normandy before Eden Prime mission...

I seriously think Bioware made big mistake to apply actor who play Carth Onasi to voiceover Kaidan because i hated Carth for his "Sorry but despite all your great deeds i don't trust you in off..." attitude and i seriously wanted to leave him on Leviatan in that cage but devs don't give me a choice so Virmire in ME 1 was last stop for him.

However if anybody looks for easy fight whit Saren, retuning on bomb side is ultimative choice because of huge gas tank on the opposite to bomb side of that landing zone.
And once Saren will fly over that tank... just send a round of ammo in that tank and wait for huge BOOOM.

Kaidan
I wish I could've thrown Ashley out of the airlock.

I send Kaidan to the tower then go and save him and the salarians.

I let Kaidan die because I got sick of seeing him so much in ME2 on my female Shepard (she was a stock ME2 Shepard) and I wanted how my Shepard would react when she meets up with Ashley in ME2.

first 2 playthroughs ashley was saved, the third time kaiden was. to me ashley made a more fitting choice with her fmily background, wanting to atone for her families past by an act of self sacrifice

No, you can't save both. You have the option to go on to the AA tower or doubleback to the nuke. And I agree with another poster that the fight at the nuke is arguably a bit more of a challenge. Anyway, when I read a lot of threads about the choice on Virmire, I always wondered why where you go didn't seem to factor into most people's decision on who to save. Even on this thread, people mention the decision based on hating/loving Kaidan or Ashley for one reason or another.

And I can buy into someone playing Shepherd where that sort of personal feeling toward a character would drive their decision. I was just curious to know if anyone was like me and based their decision on some other factor.

Of course, then that leads toward questions on why you sent Ashley or Kaidan with the salarians. I've done it both ways, though most times I send Ashley because having Kaidan, a tech, arm a nuke makes more sense to me. But I know someone else who chose to send Kaidan with the salarians because he felt Ashley's lack of experience working with aliens wouldn't make her a good liason.

And I've already mentioned how I tend to go back for the nuke, but sometimes I convince myself that Kirrahe is right, the nuke will take care of itself, and I'll head for the AA tower. This makes more sense when you find Kirrahe back on the Normandy, because you'll see him at the AA tower. I don't know why he's on the Normandy when you go back toward the nuke, other than maybe in that particular reality, he wasn't on the strike team at the AA tower and managed to escape the blast.

THIS. I've let him die every time, even on my female playthrough.

The first time I sent him with Kirrahe because I thought this was the decision that kills him (I knew about the "one of them must die on Virmire" thing already). It wasn't until the third playthrough (that female one) that I sent Ashley with him instead.

Kaiden is one of the very few characters in Mass Effect that I didn't like, for reasons that I don't really know.

He's died every single time I've played. It really isn't fair putting him up against Ashley.

I like his voice at least. But everything else about him seems boring.

Tali, Liara, Wrex, Garrus, Ashley, Shepard, Anderson, Udina, etc. Udina's a dick, but he's supposed to be a dick. And he plays his part as a dick pretty well, so I like the character, just not the person. :P

Maybe I've just desensitized to Kaiden. He dies without fail every game, so I just don't give him a chance. Kind of like Aerith in FFVII -- who really uses her and wastes time leveling her up when she's just gonna get stuck by Sephiroth at the end of the first disk?

Mine is similar but far stranger

For instance I really hated Ashley, thought she was damn annoying.  I liked Kaiden and I thought his characters backstory felt more relevant to the universe than Ashleys (sure her grandfathers submission to the Turians was something, but it felt relatively irrevelevant by the time ME takes place).

But I always killed Kaiden.  Part of this was becaues I hated Carth from KOTOR and they have the same VA.  Second, and odder was that Ashley was younger than Kaiden.

This is a ridicoulous reason, but a reason I had nontheless.

I always save Kaidan but I like Ash, too. Poor Ash.
