Roleplay
isn't fun when you're scrambling for things to do. The idea of the
Purple Nug is to give people an opportunity to pitch their own ideas
along with the main plot.
The basic rules are only to be kind to
others. If you have a plot line you wish to have completed, you have to
have all the players involved and ready with their roles beforehand,
with a clear idea as to how things get resolved.
This is the OOC Community for the IRC Roleplayers that take part in a Dragon Age-based
The
roleplay is open, meaning we do not force plotlines on anyone. If you
don't want to take part make sure to say in the ooc channel.
Rules:
* Ask people before getting involved with their plotlines. Don't insinuate yourself without their permission.
*
Open roleplay means that story lines are continous and you're free to
act WITHIN CHARACTER, however you want. Prepare for consequences if you
do things openly like cast magic in front of templars.
• Lke to
play a bunch of characters? Great! Don't overdo it and have 30 at once,
and they all have to have unique profiles and names.
• Try and remember this is before landsmeet, remember what's happening around. If you're not sure, ask.
•
God-Mode is non-existant!!! You're not perfect, you can be damaged, you
can't kill everyone, fight everyone and basically do no wrong. All
characters have flaws or inherent issues. Deal with it. God-moding will
be dealt with by erasing the character's actions and and if it
continues, a ban.
• Roleplay how you want, but use terminology
that fits the time period. IE: you're not going to pummel someone like
a jackhammer and you can tell someone they look like a rhinoceros.
Instead you'd say you're pummeling them like a target dummy and they
look like a bronto. Try and use descriptions, it makes it easier for
someone to understand that you're looking down at your boots or
flipping your hair from your eyes. Call attention to specific details
everyone once in a while. Got a large scar on your forehead? Remind us
of it when you're talking... does it pucker when you smile? Frown? etc.
•
You cannot make canon characters, this includes Grey Wardens or origin
characters (no Elissa cousland etc). This may change with Awakenings
release.
• The channel is not a place for voyeuristic
opportunity. Nothing graphically sexual can occur with others present
in the channel, period. Keep the same about too graphic violence as
well. Make a private room and you can notify it in ooc area if people
want to watch you roleplay. That goes for all outside the inn
activities.
On joining:
Always open for new members, however, you must post a bio.
If
you're uncertain about people in the place you're in, an excellent way
to break into the roleplay is to introduce yourself like you would to
anyone new. Don't be afraid to ask the person in ooc if there is
anything specific that should be obvious about their character: scars,
blindness etc.
Not sure what to do? Read a really great guide by Ser_Ceylon:
Getting Started
IRC Basics
Let's
introduce you to the IRC basics first so that, if you so wish, you can
lurk about in the channel and get a feel for the place!
To get
to the channel you can use the browser portal or an IRC client. If
you're using a client then the information you need is here -
Server:: irc.freenode.net
Channel name:: #thefrostylampost
If you're using the browser portal you just need to pop in your name and the channel name, which is above. Don't forget the #!
Sometimes
names are registered on the server so you'll find you have to make do
with something similar. It helps if you have a more unique name than
Joe or Bob. To make a full name you can either lump the two parts
together like AidanKilhern OR Aidan_Kilhern; putting just a space
between them will result in just the first part appearing! Similarly,
it works if you're somebody with a title like Ser, for example
Ser_Audric.
How Do I Drive This Thing!?
Once
you're settled into the channel and can see everyone there, you can
either remain quiet and watch or say a little hello. If you're in an IC
channel (such as #thepurplenug)this must be done in brackets, to denote that it is an Out Of Character or OOC statement. You can use () or [], we don't mind.
It's
best if you join the actual RP channel to get a taste of what's going
on but you can also join the OOC channel. To do this, just type /join
#nugOOC in the text bar and it should automatically let you join.
It makes a little tab at the top of the page, just above the main chat
window. If you're using a web portal (I use FireFox, it may differ for
other people), the little tabs will light up blue when somebody has
posted or green when somebody comes in/leaves.
If somebody has
an @ infront of their name it means they have Super Moderator Powers
and are to be worshipped with ritual sacrifices. Or listened to.
There's no special way to get it. You're either first in the channel
that day or somebody who has the @ can grant you it. All it means is
you can change the channel header or boot those people who aren't
playing nice.
If you want to talk to somebody in private, click
on their name in the occupants list on the right. In the little
drop-down menu, click Query. Like joining another channel, it'll open
another tab directly to who you want to talk to so all your evil plans
will remain secret.
To perform actions, type /me and then your action. Example below -
/me sneers and barks an order at the younger Knights, causing them to scramble.
Will give you;
Ser_Ceylon sneers and barks an order at the younger Knights, causing them to scramble.
Only instead it'll have your username, not one of mine.
What's That Beeping Sound!?
If
you have a PM (or Private Message) open with somebody, everytime they
send you a message it will cause the window to utter a beep sound to
alert you to it. Their tab name will also light up red and the browser
tab will flash with a message. Sometimes this beep doesn't work so it
pays to be vigilant to avoid accidentally ignoring people!
Another
way to set the beep off is if somebody types your whole name. For
example, if I am using Ser_Ceylon and somebody types or tabs up
Ser_Ceylon, my window will beep and alert me. Whoever did so will have
their name highlighted in red so you can find it easily.
What
does tabbing a name in mean? If you start typing someone's name in the
bar, pressing the Tab key will automatically fill it in for you! Just
make sure that you get the start of their name right. For instance, if
there are two people starting with A (let's say Azabeth and Annie)
you'd have to type Az and push tab to get Azabeth as A-tab will most
likely get you Annie. This is handy to remember when you have a whole
bunch of Ser_ people in the channel!
We Can't Stop Here, This Is Nug Country!
I've already explained how to join new channels in the same tab, so let's give you a list of them to wander around in!
#thepurplenug - This is the hub of the RP channels, where everyone comes in to start
and where 90% of the action happens. Whether you just want to chill out
and watch, start casual banter or instigate some serious RP plots then
here's the place you want to be. It's also where you'll find most of
the players should you wish to get a hold of them.
#DenerimChantry
- Need a Templar? A Sister or Brother? Ser Tavish? Or perhaps you just
want to show how devout you are. Regardless, here is where you go if
your plot needs to take part in the chantry building in Denerim. It's
often quite empty as those naughty Templars are usually in the Lampost!
#ChasindHovel - Unless you need Corneilius, you probably won't end up here.
#nugooc - Where all the OOC babble is SUPPOSED to happen so we don't flood the
Swooper channel with it or the main RP window. However it seldom plays
out like that!
I Can See The Light!
So now
we're out of the Deep Roads portion of the Guide! Do we still have all
our party members? Good. Now, if you're having any problems at all in
the channel feel free to talk to ask for someone more IRC savvy than
myself, as I am no expert. Which is partly why I'm writing this guide
like I am! If I'm thorough, then maybe less people will get
confused/lost/eaten by Darkspawn. Now we get to the FUN part!
Creating Your Character
So
you've gotten hang of the how things are moving and are ready to take
the plunge into the Wilds of Dragon Age Role Play (or DARP, as it's fun
to say. DARP DARP DARP). Here I'll give you a few basic hints and tips
that will hopefully help you avoid any mishaps and misunderstandings!
If you don't read this and make a mistake you'll fail your Harrowing
and we'll have to let Ser Audric or Ser Ceylon show you what Templars
do best.
Who Am I?
In Dragon Age there are
three races you can pick from. In the RP there are four or five! Mmm,
flavours. I shall add more if people shout them to me but so far my
list of playable races stand at Human, Dwarf, Elf, Chasind and Qunari.
To learn more about these people I strongly advise you hit up the Dragon Age Wikipedia for more information.
To make your life That Much Easier I'll list the race pages right here!
Human
Dwarf
Elf
Chasind
Qunari
Now
I can see that you're eager to get going and make up your own little
person but HOLD ON A SECOND. Make sure you pay attention to what the
guides say. Now, I'm not telling you to follow them to The Word, but it
helps in making believable characters if you do.
Everyone in
this RP will be somebody that, if you're in Denerim, you wouldn't
really bat an eyelid at. A Qunari might be odd but bear in mind that
there are one or two you can find as mercenaries around the place.
You don't need to be some super special fantastic outcast of society.
A charming warrior, a wily thief, a busy merchant or a grumpy Templar.
ALL of these are perfectly acceptable examples of current characters!
There's no such thing as dull or boring in an environment like this.
Unless you're a nug. But then most likely you'll be dinner.
What Am I?
There are a few things you could be in the RP. A banana is not recommended, though. The Chantry Sisters make sure of that.
Here is a list of classes - You don't really need to know much about the numbers, just what they do.
Again,
look through the DA wiki! Learn about what you're going to play. If you
want to be a apostate/blood mage/Maleficar, how will you act in the
Lampost and around Templars? Different apostates will act differently.
Some are cool and calm, others anxious and fidgety. Joined the Templar
club? Whilst all Templars need an unshakeable faith, not all of them
will be nice and neither will they all be nasty. Most of them do
however walk as if they hold a sword in their crotch.
How Am I?
Personality
an make or break a character in the RP. Most of the characters in here
will be pretty much sound of of mind in one way or another. They have
lives to lead and some even have families to support. Sure, you can
have a crazy person, but please bear in mind that they'll probably end
up avoided.
That doesn't mean to say your character is dull!
Normal people have a WIDE variety of personalities that it's nearly
impossible to be boring.
As always, if you're unsure of how to
play your person, watch the Lampost channel and see how other people
interact. Don't copy them but see how all the different types of
personality intermingle and work or, as in some entertaining cases,
don't work!
Where Did I Come From?
Here is a Really Big map of Thedas.
Ferelden is in the bottom right there. Yes, it's the funny blobby bit.
Thedas,
in my personal opinion, is pretty much a blend of the larger European
countries. Ferelden is similar to the UK with threads of other places
thrown in. Orlais is France, Rivain is Spain, Antiva is Italy and the
Anderfels are Germany. Par Vollen and Seheron fill in the roles of the
few North African countries that get a tiny peep in, such as Morocco
and Tunisia.
Like I have said the Wiki has more info on all of
these countries. It's a good idea to take a peep at some of their
languages too, though less so for the Qunari lands as they seem to lack
much of an accent.
Who Is Who?
If you want
to let people know who you are or want to know who runs which
characters for RP plot purposes, it's really really good to go to the http://community.liv...com/purplenug/. Here you can leave a short description of who you are so that you can avoid retyping out everything.
Some people have their characters descriptions here: Character Forms and Listings
You CAN run more than one character but please try to put effort into them. Half-baked babies make us cry.
