I never played ME1 and I'm sure at the time, it was great fun.  However, after playing ME2, ME1 is terribly boring and lacks sooo much.  The lack of quest guidance (just tell me where to go already!) and the whack upgrade system are so bad in comparison with ME2.  I just find it almost impossible to play.  I'm very glad I got ME2 first, or I probably would've never given it a chance if I'd based my hopes off ME1.  I bought ME1 for $20, and I'd say it's worth about that.  Anyway, I might get through it one day, but I really can't get over how comparatively different the two games are in regards to time management and mechanics.  And the elevators...what in he** is up with that nonsense??

I ordered the first a few weeks before the second was released... and the game is awesome, there have been a lot of changes for ME2 in Gameplay and controls, but that is just stuff you need to get used too...

The first game is great. I would strongly advise to give it 5h of your time and you will see its old, but it rocks!

My experience is very similar to Kondorr's. Apart from the horrendous inventory system ME1 is a great game still AFAIC.

Well, as for the elevators, they were like ME1's loading screens, now when you go into an elevator, you get an orange screen with images. At least there was dialogue when you were with your squad, and heard the news...

I replayed ME1 recently after playing ME2, and I still enjoy playing it, story is still fun to see play out.

I've also bought ME1 after first playing ME2, it's not a bad game but you can appreciate the changes made in ME2 to make it a much more fluid experience.

The only thing I can't get used to is the graphics and animation in ME1, makes me wanna rush through it so i can get back to ME2 again!

It's hard to get started in it, even if you played it before ME2 like I did, and it's hard going back to it at first after ME2, but once it gets going it is rather brilliant, you just need to let it get going so to speak.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't understand how anyone can play a game's sequel before playing the original.

I bought ME1 a few weeks before ME2 came out (having played both KOTOR and DAO, which rocked my socks, so I figured I'd give the mass effect universe a try). I enjoyed it, but I couldn't really understand the hype until I got stuck into ME2...which was amazing.

I've since gone back and played through ME1 again, and actually had a lot more fun with it than the first time. Weird. ^_^

I played ME1 (what seems like) ages ago, then ME2 as soon as it came out, with my imported paragon, was going to redo ME2 with a more renegade shep, using one of the saves from the excellent site - but reading the saves, realised I'd missed a lot, and ended up restarting ME1 from scratch playing as a real pain in the arse character.... I admit I was a bit disappointed going back to the slightly inferior textures etc, but once I got going, got swept up in the story again and really don't notice it now - and some of the emails I got in ME2 suddenly make a lot more sense... (goldfish-like memory? me? :-) )

Why play ME 2 before ME1 ? I don't get it, it's like playing MW2 before COD4 MW...

When ME 1 was out it was ground breaking and amazing, but it does have a few years on its neck.

Still the main reason I bought ME 2 was because ME 1 was so great and that you could import you carachter into ME2...

Maybe 1 of the mastahs. I bought ME1 on launch too. The combat and inventory systems may be better in ME2, but I think the story in ME1 is so much better. I'll eventually get around to playing through it for like the 8th time once I finish some more playthroughs of ME2.

Well gameplay-wise there's no arguing ME2 is much better done, although far from perfect. In terms of story though ME1 was vastly superior. And no even without ME2 in comparison ME1 was still well worth the $60 I spent on it.

I wonder if the OP is a shooter fan, in which case he'd probably love ME2 and hate ME1.

It cannot be loading time only, at least not on the Xbox. When you're at the citadel, the rapid transit (or whatever it's called) was much quicker than the elevators. I very much prefer the orange loading screens in ME2. The only thing that annoys me a little (with emphasis on little) is the loading screen when you land on planets. Why don't the Kodiak and the Normandy have the same speed when they dock? Inertia fail.

I and many many many other disagree with you sir. ME2 had both superior gameplay and story.

I preordered the Limited Collectors Edition of ME1 and picked it up on launch. Does that make me a supa mastah? Answer: No, that makes me a fanboy....

Yeah, I have similar experiences when playing ME2, and realising what a lacklustre game it is in many respects, and how much has been ruined/not improved on.

Still, gotta keep whacking those moles from behind cover, right?

Well I'm actually replaying ME1 again even after finishing ME2, just to explore being a different background (Spacer, Sole Survivor, that sort of thing) and everything else.

Yes, ME2 is the superior game, but ME1 still remains perectly playable and enjoyable.

I will say again, though, that when ME3 is finished, they should do a special edition of ME1 to bring it in line with ME2/ME3 in terms of graphics and gameplay (from what I've heard ME3 will be largely unchanged in those regards from ME2). That would give a more consistent and enjoyable trilogy both for those who never played it before, and those who want to replay it (heck, could add some new options to ME1 to make it even more worth revisiting)

One of my friend's echoes the sentiment of the OP after all, I enjoy both games equally, honestly ME1 was more about exploration and setting the scene, in the second you are more into all out battle and I find that they managed both gloriously. Both stories have gripped me and keep me going and sure the ME2 combat system is REALLY nice but I miss my grenades and all my armour but life goes on. All I can say is that ME1 lit the torch and ME2 is carrying it on to pass it to the 3rd.

I bought ME2 cuz it looked like a good game.
I bought ME1 cuz I didn't understand some of ME2.

no wonder why people rise ME2 being the best, most of them never played the first one.
Sad day I tell you.

Evidence please, a thread of a dozen people at the most is not evidence.  I played ME1 before playing ME2 and I still think that overall ME2 is the better game (the mako is the main thing going for ME1).  Actually, no, don't give evidence, we don't need to derail this thread.

can't you even look at this whole topic? you'll find your "evidence".

currently replaying ME1 after a long time of not touching it.

* combat is horribly floaty, although I love the burst of speed when you run in a fight.

* citadel is just way too big, even for a scene setter. so much of it is dead space, and once you've gathered your fetch quests and left, you really only ever need to go back once and even then, you can bypass most of it if you want to.

* SO MUCH OF THE GAME has almost nothing to do with the main plot. tons of fetch quests or really cliched and generic "hey random guy help me out with this" missions that are horrible throwbacks to a style of RPG that needs to die quietly.

* a lot of tedium on main mission planets, be it mako padding or - argh - trundling from one contrivance to another on noveria (hey you need this keycard to get to the next bit, even though you're a spectre and there's no logical reason why you can't just push past the one guard on the door).

breaking the planets into smaller chunks is one of the smartest things they did. that, and having the common sense to realise there is no need whatsoever to have an overly large citadel in ME2 just for the sake of it, when the location has absolutely nothing to do with the main story of the sequel.

* Mako levels are as bad as ever. Seen one, seen em all.
