I guess it depends on how your play style is. It's not like your character KNOWS the smith will commit suicide if he doesn't find his daughter. So if you gave it a try with no luck, then that's it. Or if you're a bad character and you just want the bow....lol

Why do people think Diligence set is so good? When its complete crap compared to everything else but Anchient Elven Armor?
Also you do know that wether the blacksmith dies or not has no difference in your story or ending or anything?
And yes far Song is always worth it to get if you use any archer characters.

I prefer Diligence as a cheaper set available earlier in the game for one of my minions, and it looks good. But Owen also has the only Grandmaster Hale Rune available in the shops, and even the game for many folks currently.

Diligence Gloves and Boots are good fillers for a custom set of Templar armor, as they have the highest defense/armor rating in the game.
On the topic of Far Song though, it depends on how many archers you have in your group. You're better served using a shortbow for a dex archer than you would be for using Far Song. If you've got a cunning rogue (such as Leliana), and don't want to use her quest bow (which is almost as good), then Far Song could be fine.
The thing about Far Song though is it's expensive. If you're playing a party game, you're going to want to spread good equipment around to everyone. You only get so much gold, and thus so many really expensive items (like Far Song), so it might be better to use something like Whitewood Bow and Diligence pieces because they give you better bang for your buck, and reserve your big ticket items for things like Lifegiver and Andruil's Blessing, or Evon's Great Mail and Felon's Coat.
Diligence Boots are bar none the best tank boots in the game, and a good addition to any "custom" set, especially for Templars. Do you want cheap, good tank boots for your Templar with 100% spell resistance, or do you want a really expensive bow for your second cunning based archer?

One reason why I never have. But Redcliffe is a town full of Approval penalties for many members of the party.
