This is a single player game, not something that is online heavy, so this is unacceptable!
What if someone doesn't have the internet for one reason or another, can they even play it?

Any words from the devs about this? If they are working on something i wont play until its fixed.
this is from the Mass Effect 2 forum where they still have info up about the downtime.

Hello everyone
Sorry for the delay, we are having a few network issues that we are working hard to restore asap.
You
can still play Mass Effect 2. Start your games, wait for the timeout
(you will see a message saying "communication with the mass effect 2
servers has been interrupted'"), then click ok and you will be able to
play.
Again, we are working to get things up and running correctly asap. We appreciate your patience. [smilie]../../../../images/forum/emoticons/smile.png[/smilie]

I'm the biggest Bioware fan out there, but not being able to play my game, my single-player game, without the EA servers is outragous. I get the need for all this crap on the PC, its also why I don't play PC game anymore. But it is totally unnecssary for the consoles! I bought the CE for both DOA and ME2, planning to have and hold them forever (I usually trade games in/out constantly). But does this mean that whenever EA decides to stop supporting these games' servers, I'm SOL?

I started DA: Journeys over the weekend and unlocked the first 2 items but kept getting the 700800e8 code until last night. Perhaps there are gremlins in the servers!
Edit* Ah spoke too soon, I can't load a save with the bonus items either. Epic.

I'm sorry for the hate but they treat us all like criminals for trying to play a legitimate copy of the game.

So just to clear up my own incredulity at the stupidity of this problem I went and looked up what actually causes it with Bioware
CAUSE: There's a distinction between the DLC data and the rights to access the data. Acquiring DLC through the DA:O Downloadable Content manager does two things: it downloads the data to your hard drive, and it gives you the rights to the item you downloaded. That last part is the heart of the problem. Many of the promotional items (DA:J, preorder, character creator) are bundled together into a single block of data, but the access rights are set up for individual items. This leads to a situation where you don't have the rights for a specific item even though you have the appropriate data on your drive (because you've already downloaded a different item from the same bundle). If you have a connection to the DA servers, then the game can verify that you do, in fact, have the rights to use those additional items. If the game can't contact the DA servers for confirmation, then you get the dialog box.
So grats to BioWare for failling hard on the In Game Downloadable Content section. Essentially, if you do any of your downloads in there, make SURE it says Downloaded and not Purchased. Also, in the future, only download through XBox LIVE Marketplace.

Alright this is ridiculous... I hate to be "that guy" but at this point, I am seriously going to start looking into filing in Small Claims court. I did not spend $60 per EA game just to have them be unusable.
I sympathize, but I'm sure your filing fee will be in excess of $60.00.
