If I were to make a prediction (and my predictions are usually wrong, so get out that grain of salt), I'd say that the hook of ME3 is going to be the squad dynamic. Namely, instead of getting your squad to trust you, this time it's getting your squad to trust each other.
This could come up in a variety of instances, like healing the rift between Miranda and Jack, or getting Legion and Tali on good terms, and maybe an NPC romance thrown in for good measure. If you get characters on the same wavelength, they get a shared ability they could use in concert with each other during combat, and the more they trust each other, the more powerful that shared ability is.
Now we've all heard about how of you "cheat" with your ME1 love interest with a squadmate from ME2, there would be repercussions, and I think this might be where said repercussions stem. If you cheated, one of three things would happen.
-That the two LIs wouldn't be able to use the shared ability that they would have had had you not cheated, and even combat penalties might be implemented.
-The two squaddies wouldn't be able to be used during combat at the same time (which would suck for me, because my MainMaleInfilShep cheated on Super Soldier Ashley with Biotic Powerhouse Jack).
-The dreaded doomsday secneario where, after the forced confrontation, the dumpee leaves your squad for good.
Good idea? Bad idea? Thoughts? Concerns?
An idea on how LI infidelity might come up in combat.

Ashley might kill the other one with "friendly fire", or Liara may squeeze the other into a coffee cup with a biotic field or Jack may invite her opposite down into engineering for some tea.

Leave squad? Sure, but would be odd to not help prevent the galaxy's destruction. Not work well together? Well, they could always be shot for not following orders and endangering the mission.
Joking aside, I don't see this idea working for this atm. Perhaps it'll change the story, but having it change the combat wouldn't be very welcome. I think. People would complain about being forced to group with certain people to have best abilities or being forced to not bring along two certain people at the same time, etc. Actually, there are complaints on forums anyway, but there ya go.

"If I'd wanted to do more than take your shields down I would have."

Nah I will just tell Legion that the ME1 LI is disrupting group cohesion and she needs to be terminated. If all else fails sick Grunt on them, he is always willing to kick butt.

People who stayed faithful to their LI will receive a huge combat buff and head to the forums to gloat about it.
People who cheated on their LI will receive an identical huge buff with a different name and head to the forums to laugh about it.

I highly doubt they will alter the gameplay in any way, considering that they plan to use the same exact engine for ME3 so they can focus on the story and getting it out sooner...

The loyal/unloyal thing I can handle, but if they flat out try to kill each other or leave over it, then screw it, I'll just import my faithful playthrough.
Of course there should be reprecussions, but it should remain within a reasonable context of the story. I'm not going to lose out on squadmembers because my Shep needed companionship other than a picture.
